  • How can I stop smoking?

    Hey guys.

I've been on and off smoking for a couple of years (I am 18 yrs old).
But since I got my driver's license, it is really hard for me to stop smoking, because I often drive to parties where everyone gets drunk and I can't just sit there and only drink plain water.. then I need some treats like cigarettes, nice food, maybe a nice drink like an iced tea or energy drink (I know that's not primal, but I allow myself cheating on the weekends sometimes).
Any advice on how to stop smoking? Especially for me it is not so much about the nicotine, the drug, but rather about the sociality, about socialising, talking to people, sharing cigarettes & I like it when I talk and have that thing in my hand and I like the smoke and it's just calming and everything.

All I can say is stop now before it becomes a terrible habit, one that is very difficult to quit. My friends and I started very young, smoking when we got together, parties, etc., and then it became smoking all the time. Took me almost 20 years to finally quit. Find something else to put in your mouth like an unlit cigar, toothpick, straw, anything other than actually smoking. You might be the one odd person that stands out because you are always healthy(which is a good thing), but at least you will smell and taste good if you end up kissing at these parties.

Agree with above... STOP before it is to late! Especially since you don't drink! Stop going to parties where people just get drunk! Unless you want to get drunk! One important thing about a habit is that you have to create a new ritual that will help you create a NEW habit of NOT SMOKING! The toothpicks, cigars, loli-pops... you are to young to remember Kojack! Kojak - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Telly Savalas played a cop, well in real life he was trying to quit smoking so they brough that into the show and he sucked on loli pops al lthe time... it was cool back on 70's TV. Or just keep a coffe stir stick in your mouth!
Or just crush the next pack you buy and throuw it out.. and then realize how much money you are wasting!!!!!!

      Happy Trails!

        "How can I stop smoking"

You just do. I'm not saying that it is easy, but seriously: You simply need to stop doing it - that's all there is to it. Don't waste your time by trying to distract yourself from the fact that you need to break the habit.

BTW: I'm not a big fan of abstinence. Granted, I've never been addicted to nicotine or alcohol (or indeed any other controlled substance), but it seems to me that except for substances which cause a definite physical addiction, instead of trying to avoid the substance at all cost, you need to reach a state where you can resist the urge to binge (deliberately using a term from eating disorders here). I don't buy into stuff like twelve step programs either because IMO these only try to replace one dependency with another - the real goal is to become independent.

People who smoke STINK! Do you have to do what others do? How about be a man, do your own thing, be who YOU want to be. Do you intend to go through life as a lemming, following the idiocy you see around you, or as an intelligent individual who does what is best for you? That you are asking is proof you have a good brain, so just use it. Get a fake cigarette if you are such a follower you can't say no to something so obviously bad. What if someone offers you some hard drugs, you doing that, too? BTW, following a primal diet is meaningless if you do something so absolutely unhealthy as smoke.

I know I'm being a hard ass, but come on!

Step 1)Consider: Money, health, not having shitty breath

              Step 2)Quit.

If you are primal, I'm sure you had to deal with carb flu. If you made it through that, you can make it through this.

I read that the true addiction is over in 3 days if you quit. After that, it's just habit.

Plan ahead. Plan 3 days to do without no matter what, and after that, remind yourself that you are over it and don't have to do it.

A camping trip where others are not doing it, or a visit to family where no one does it would be a good 3 days to plan around.

Then, avoid those parties. You need to be with a healthier crowd!

The thing with that is: I live in Germany and everybody is allowed to drink from age 16 (beer and wine) and 18 (hard liquor and cigarettes), basically everybody smokes and drinks, so it's impossible to go to a party where no one drinks. I mean I still want to party and hang out with my friends..

When most people start, they feel kind of shitty and crave conventional foods. I know I did. I was hungry alot and would walk through the grocery store and just look at all the food I "wasnt allowed to eat".

Bottom line, I quit smoking 40 years ago and thank god I did. Many friends have died or suffering terribly from smoking.
It was the TOUGHEST thing I ever did. I was severely addicted for over 1 year. For that 1st year the urge to smoke was INTENSE, although the urges became less & less frequent. To this day, I still LOVE the smell of 2nd hand smoke, and I know that I cannot puff on another cigarette or I will get addicted all over again. It is not possible to slow down smoking. It is ALL OR NOTHING. Smokers are addicted for life.

You will just have to make up your mind to stop smoking. More than 2 drinks per day WILL cause liver damage called cirrhosis of the liver. One of my friends died from this affliction, and he never drank anything stronger than beer. Just because your friends are STUPID, doesn't mean you have to be STUPID, too! It is your choice, decide wisely.

I am now 68 year old, strong & healthy. Breathing is great, strong sex life, workouts at the gym, and THANK GOD I QUIT SMOKING !
