  • where do your energy cals come from when you go primal

Is it all from animal and fruit fat and nut fat?

And your own body fat! And for some people, from vegetable-based carbs (white potato, sweet potato) or white rice.

Today it has come from a big hunk of pig cooked on the grill and then eaten with my hands.

        For me:

First place: Fatty cuts of meat/butter/coconut oil/grassfed beef tallow
        Second place: Sweet Potatoes/starchy tubers
        Third place: Fruits

I'm not eating a lot of starchy tubers right now because I'm backing off from my chronic over-exercising. So most of my calories are coming from fat. The bulk of this is from naturally occurring fats in the meat and eggs I eat. Some is the coconut oil, butter, or ghee I cook with. I don't go out of my way to add fat to my diet, though. Green vegetables make up the bulk of my food volume, but they are rather low calorie. I don't eat much fruit. Occasional dairy and nuts.

As for ground beef, to butt in on your second question, I usually get the 85% but it's 100% grass fed. I'd go leaner if it was conventionally raised.

I eat grain fed ground beef (damn me being a poor student!) so I go with 90% lean or higher, and then cook it in either coconut oil or ghee.

good to know. I'm not going to go out of my way for grass fed beef any time soon but knowing i can get leaner packages and do some good then i'll try to be about it when its ground beef i'm selecting.
