    Hello, new member here. So I've been doing Paleo for about more than a month and I wanted to see how my body would react to sugar with a small piece of chocolate cake, just so I can completely avoid this crap for good. Well after I ate some cake, I got the worst headache and nauseous feeling that literally I felt like I was going through torture. Let me tell you, I'm glad I did this experiment so I can remind myself why I hate sugar and how my body hates it as well.

    Anyone ever had a similar experience?

    Yeah stopped eating cake... At first I would accept a piece but I would literally end up on the toilet within 30 minutes with shooting diarrhia. tmi ?

    Sugar as in some candy or something doesn't impact me as much, but if I eat some its usually just 1 or 2 pieces. I can also eat honey with a spoon without any negative effects..

      A lot of people on here report similar reactions. It may well have been the wheat (gluten) in the cake and not the sugar.

          I had nearly the same experience this week for pretty much the same reason; part of why I've undertaken Paleo eating is because I've been cropping up with food sensitivities, so I wanted to see how I'd tolerate wheat after being off of it (it was a friend's homemade chocolate cake, which I figured would at least make up for some of the unpleasantness if my body decided that we Do Not Want it). My body's reaction: Nope. No, no, nope, uh-uh, no, nope. At least my last cake was homemade deliciousness.

            I've been gradually changing my diet towards a more primal approach over the past several months. I went full primal on May 15th and was feeling pretty good until the 2nd week when my IBS symptoms (one of my highest priorities to "fix") really started acting up. This weekend I decided to do a 48 hour cheat which ended up including chicken in BBQ sauce, bread, Dominos Pizza, a bottle of vitamin water (sugar), fried plantains (sugar and wheat), sweet baked beans, a couple of hamburgers and a large meal from Long John Silvers. This all ended last night and this morning I had the best and most normal bowel movement I've had in two weeks. Go figure.

            There doesn't seem to be any pattern to my problems and I'm thinking I was wrong to assume it was sugar and/or wheat. I was going to do a 30 day full-blown Paleo trial but decided it's probably too strict for me to stick with at this time so I'm going to do a detailed 30 day food log. I'm sure my trigger is something I'm eating but so far, nothing seems to make sense.

              Good Move Corwin, be your own detective. I've had to do that too. Spuds are ok in moderation and not often, Pasta is definitely not, in any amount, at anytime, and makes me hungry for garbage food. A sliver of cake, no ill effects. Haven't had bread in six weeks, not in a hurry to try it.

              This feeling so good isn't worth giving up, but it is worth exploring and learning more about our own bodies. Love this WOE!!

                Yeah, when i eat candy or sugar i get a TERRIBLE headache now.

                  I had a piece of lemon cake last weekend. Gave me a headache and made me feel nauseous. Not sure if it was the gluten or the sugar.

                    I do fine with a small amount of sugar now and then. Generally its ice cream at birthday parties and such. It gets me a little wired but it doesn't do anything to my digestion. But then wheat doesn't, either. I swell up but I don't get sick.

                    But it is absolutely toxic for your liver regardless of how your body reacts to it in the moment. Definitely a food to be avoided.

                        Well you're going to become more sensitive to it if you haven't consumed it in a long time. Doubt your body "hates" carbohydrates, it just isn't effective at metabolizing it if you haven't eaten it. Similar to vegetarians who feel bad on meat because they have insufficient stomach acid production.

                          I won't lie and say that after eating a little bit if sugar I actually feel good, satisfied. But that's only a LITTLE - like, a few bites. I can only get 1/2 way through a piece of cheesecake, then no more.

                          Also, the morning after I eat a bunch of sugar my mouth tastes BAD, like feet or something.
