  • Where does fat go?

If you eat a very high fat diet (butter, meat), where does it go? Like when you eat a high carb meal, insulin dumps it into fat cells. If the fat in a fat high diet also goes into the fat cells, does it have the same effects as the carbs where the fat cell gets larger etc?

    Ketosis

See link above - its a good read. Basically fat is converted to ketones for fuel. Excess ketones are released through your breath and urine.

fat is used by the body in many many ways. all hormones are created from it for one thing. I just downloaded metabolism at a glance and will be churning thru it to see what else it does.

Read Chapter 21 of Good Calories, Bad Calories. In short, your body uses fat for all the work of the body, except a modest amount for brain, which the liver can get by converting protein. In the absence of all the sugar and starch, which nature did not prepare our bodies to have all the time, we preferentially burn fat. That in part explains why, since fat has most calories, 9 per gram, viz 4 per gram of protein and sugar. Any not used is excreted in several ways as ketones. If you eat all the calories you need, then your weight won't move much. If you eat less than your body needs, then your stored fat is released. As with sugars, we can get all caloric sources with an ease that was unknown to early humans.

If all excess fat that was not needed by our bodies was excreted as ketones, couldn't we eat unlimited fat?

If you don't eat carbs, that is pretty much the case.

You can definitely store dietary fat as fat.

yeah, i mean, pretty much eating in excess creates excess. kwim?

but, fat is -- in general -- a better food source than carbohydrates. more vitamins are fat soluble, they are the precursors to our hormones, they don't create insulin spikes, etc etc etc. good stuff.

does that mean we want to go zero carb? i don't think so. but it does mean that we can get more nutrition from less volume if we go for fat with our foods.

Thanks for the link! That was exactly the information I was looking for in my earlier thread, only the OP put it way more succinctly than I did!

I have heard good arguments on both sides of this debate. I'm just not knowledgeable enough to know which to believe. I try to listen to my body. There's only so much fat I can eat so it's kind of self-limiting. I was listening to an interview with Lustig awhile back and he was saying that, in animal studies, they cannot get the subjects to overeat fat on its own. They have to add sugar to it. He said the fat feed was often 20% sugar. But of course the study results are phrased in terms of the effects of a high fat diet.

                              Wow. Holy Crap.

If you eat lots of fat you will get fat.

You will probably feel sick before you you eat too many calories as fat.

FFA floating in your bloodstream is miniscule. Why? It's is stored of course. ASP will store fat post after a meal just fine without insulin. Even though there will be insulin anyway since protein "spike" insulin anyway how do you think amino acids get into cells.

Look through the forum at all the people not losing or gaining weight after eating all kinds of fat like they are "supposed to".
