OK, people, just to clear something up: drinking is not bad for you. People who abstain from alcohol die earlier than both moderate and heavy drinkers, and moderate drinkers have the longest life expectancy.

Heavy Drinkers Outlive Nondrinkers, Study Finds - TIME

Moderate drinking, which is defined as one to three drinks per day, is associated with the lowest mortality rates in alcohol studies.
I'm all about the primal lifestyle, too, it's dramatically changed my life for the better, and I love this message board, but let's not eschew all modern pleasures just because they didn't exist thousands of years ago. I have not seen any evidence that drinking is detrimental to overall health, unless you're a hardcore alcoholic (and the above study suggests that even that is better for you than not drinking at all).

As for the question in the OP, I'd suggest trying to develop a taste for hard liquor on the rocks. And: party on.

I agree wholeheartedly w/ Kalihand. Don't stress, it's not a religion, you won't be damned for having a drink here or there. I am a 50 year old woman, 5'2" 110 lbs. I'm a badass kite surfer, flying trapeze artist, and I've summited many a mountain over 20,000'. I'm strong as shit from years of a paleo eating lifestyle and guess what...I like my wine, tequila, and some vodka here and there. Life is abundant and to starve amongst the cornucopia of what it has to offer due to some dogma is truly unfortunate. Now go eat a lamb chop..I am!

If I'm doing everything else right then I must be doing better than most other fast food and takeaway munching students right?

So my question is, when I get drunk this weekend what should I be drinking apart from wine?

              Thanks!
Clearly, no alcohol is best. Wine has its advantages. If other alcohol, then probably spirits (ie distilled stuff without sugar), ideally mixed with water (not juice or soda). So whisky or wodka on the rocks works, or whisky soda, or gin / citrus etc

Like one poster stated above...Norcal margarita.

They are tasty, and quite refreshing.

I totally understand the issue of uni and drinking! Plus it's nearly end of exams - prime drinking time.
Weirdly though I've found myself since going primal not being overly interested in drinking. Which for me is mad because I do LOVE cider, and have the whole rugby team socialising every wednesday thing going on (which includes holding some awesome records for downing drinks..)

But now I find just something that keeps the buzz going, like a tequila or vodka based drink does the trick.
Surprising how nice it is waking up without a hangover and a takeaway box by your bed! Though I've found best thing to get if you're hungry is a chicken shish, just don't eat the pitta they whack it in. Yum yum.

Be careful with flavored vodkas and other flavored booze, lots have sugar in them. Some don't.

If you get the flavored Absolut or Smirnoff vodkas, they don't contain any sugar (or any carbs at all, for that matter). (They are probably flavored with artificial flavoring anyway... )

I have an interesting situation with boozes. I found out years ago that gin, even really good gin will give me a headache within an hour of drinking it. And I found out why. If I touch a Juniper bush I get little itching bumps. Guess what is in Gin?? Juniper berries. I have searched thru many vodkas trying to find one I could have a second drink of without feeling drunk & hungover withing 2 or 3 hours. I even tried a polish vodka made from potatoes, that worked for a while but in time it gave me a headache. I had always tried to have a clear drink thinking they were lowest in carbs & calories. Now I notice that most of the vodkas are made from(are ya ready for this?) Grain Spirits or Grain Neutral spirits ......that's not primal/paleo. And apparently my body doesn't like them.

Then last week I tried some of hubbys brandy on the rocks. No bad effects. Hmmmmm, what is brandy made from?? Distilled grapes, how interesting, that is on the primal/paleo list. Yes I know I could stop drinking, but that afternoon cocktail is so relaxing, in either the pool or the hot tub.

What think ye about the ingredient lists of particular boozes???

You might also do ok with rum and 100% agave tequila if you can't do grain spirits at all. Personally, I swell up like crazy if I eat a little wheat, but I can drink bourbon with no ill effects.

Daisy Eater, isn't bourbon mostly corn mash? Thinking back to the good ole boys mixing up sour mash.

Just checked and Bourbon, in the US to be called Bourbon, must be 51% corn, but the rest is grains. And bourbon makes me ill, always has, my parents drank it exclusively, and I can't stand even the smell of it.

I'm surprised that the contents of boozes can have such a profound effect on our bodies. Guess I shouldn't be after becoming Primal!!
