  • Meal Replacement Shakes

    Hi

I am looking to lose 3-4 stone (42-56lb) in weight in a short time. Does anyone have any thoughts on using Meal Rep shakes as the only source of food. I have seen the Cambridge and Lighter Life diets which basically are very low cal using shakes and wondered if this type of thing works. I know it wouldnt be long term but it would get the diet of to a good start.

Do not consume meal replacement shakes. EAT REAL, WHOLE FOOD. The weight will come off. Treat your body right, and your body will treat you back

Can I ask honestly, have you read anything about the primal lifestyle?

Yes, I have read about it but I just wanted to kick start myself. Seeing a bit of weight come off quickly would be a great incentive to continue on a more healthly path. I know it wouldnt be great but I wouldnt do it for long. If people think its really that bad an idea then I wont do it.

The way to kick start yourself is to eat primally. The weight will come off. Don't drink sugar & chemicals, please.

You could make some primal smoothies using fruits, good fats and some whey protein. Otherwise, I would stay away from meal replacement drinks. They are full of artificial everything.

Make primal smoothies! I have quite a few on my blog. Most are low carb so start with those!

              Here is one for you:

              1 fl oz Water
              1/2 C Coconut Milk ————– $0.50
              1/4 C Macadamia Nuts ——— $0.87
              3/8 C Frozen Blueberries ——- $0.20

The number to the right is my cost. Enjoy
              Find me at aToadontheRoad.com. Cheers!

The reason the shakes often work for people for a (VERY) short time is because it's low calorie and consistent, and requires very little planning/thinking. You could easily do the same thing by planning out a low-to-moderate-calorie day of food (focusing on meat, veggies, and added fats if needed)... and stick to it. Heck, eat the same things every day for a few weeks so it's just as mindless as the shakes. It'll be more enjoyable and healthier, by far.

I'm blogging again, at least a little bit.

Primal smoothies are great. But I wouldn't replace every meal, every day with a smoothie. You need variety in your diet, and both animal/plant matter. I can't imagine you are planning to make a spinach-and-steak smoothie. Does your short weight-loss time limit mean more to you than adopting a long-term lifestyle? I'm having trouble following your priorities. The reason shake diets don't work for everyone is because they don't offer enough variety for people to want to continue. So if you want to replace a meal with a shake, go for one meal a day, preferably with a meal where you are typically prone to overeating. You'll be more successful long-term and you won't feel like you're starving yourself because you're still giving yourself meals in which you're actually chewing something.

I used to drink that stuff, and I think it's a pretty good product. I prefer just to use natural, unflavored, whey protein isolate, and then create a drink by adding my own ingredients. But that ON Natural is a good start.

You'll feel so much better if you stick to real, whole foods, and while it may seem counter-intuitive to someone who is used to CW, the weight will come off if you eat right.

I've had pretty good results with the 30 Day Cure For The Middle-Aged Middle, lotta shakes, gets you off the sugar and caffeine and bad stuff, after which you have a good time adding all things Primal back in. The protein powder recommendations look good.
One thing about being Primal, took me about a year to really get it right, for this body, lots of experimenting, not the same for everyone. So all advice is just that till subject to your own investigation. I took this up to get away from diets/fundamentalists.
                          Good luck!
