  • Blood work.

    Just got back from reviewing lab results, the doctor freaked. Wanted to put me on statins right away but I refused and told her I'd do some research and get back to her about what to do. Got the whole spiel about switching to margarine, avoiding animal fat, yada yada. She was also concerned about my platelet count and some other things. WBC, ABSOLUTE GRAN. and ABSOLUTE LYMPHS are all below the normal range. Not really sure what any of that means, but she referred me to a hematologist. Blood pressure was good.

    Scary thing is, I've been getting some pretty bad chest pains and tightness (not disabling but not at all ignorable) that I haven't been able to find a cause for (don't think it's anxiety), and even using the Iranian equation and checking all my ratios and everything, my cholesterol still doesn't look that great. I'm only 18 though so I don't really know what to make of it all. I can't really go by how I feel because I feel like shit and always have.

    Anyways, some general info...

    Age: 18

    Diet: Primal since September of last year, so about 8 months now. Fairly strict, struggling with binge eating so I have the occasional isolated lapse but nothing that should screw me up too much. I eat two meals a day, I average 50-65% of daily calories from fat (butter, olive oil, eggs, meat, avacado) and 10-20% from carbs.
    Example meals (I'm not the best cook):

    Supplements:
    Vitamin D3 10,000 I.U. daily
    magnesium 100mg twice per day
    copper 2.5mg daily (just started this a couple weeks ago)
    betaine HCL 1200mg with each meal

    And the numbers...

    TOTAL: 347
    TRIGLYCERIDE: 77
    HDL: 55
    LDL: 277

    The other stuff she was worried about...

    WBC: 3.2
    PLATELET COUNT: 114
    ABSOLUTE GRAN.: 1.7
    ABSOLUTE LYMPHS: 1.1

    And if my calculations are correct, here are the ratios using the Iranian equation (I'd appreciate it if somebody could double check this for me)...

    Total/HDL: 6.3
    Trig/HDL: 1.4
    LDL/HDL: 4.41

    I finished a really large meal at about 11:30 the night before the blood work as I was busy and hadn't eaten yet that day. The blood was taken at about 9:30 A.M. They told me not to eat after midnight, but is 10 hours on the tail end of a really big meal enough time fasting? I've heard the ideal time is 12 hours. Could this have messed with the results at all?

    So yeah... what do?

    I'm no help, just wanted to put my arm around your shoulders & say I got the same thing today. "Blah, blah, blah, saturated fat. Blah, blah, blah, leaner cuts". Luckily, I feel like my doc trusts my judgement, and she agreed to let me adjust my diet over the summer a bit, to see if I can get that LDL down a bit and more regulated.

      A big meal eaten too late can mess up the results but whether or not that's the case, it's the chest pains I'd be worried about. Can you see a cardiologist? Have a stress test?

        My doctor was not the least bit trusting, she acted like I knew nothing and was the biggest fool in the world for eating so much butter (I told her I go through as much as a pound a week sometimes). She started explaining everything to me like I was a toddler, and when I told her I was well-versed on nutrition and even tried to get into some of the science behind why I eat the way I do she just kind of blew me off and was like NOPE WRONG YOU'RE DESTROYING YOUR ARTERIES. My mom was in the room too so they were like a little CW tag team. I could hardly get a word in edge-wise, they had already held an extensive discussion about the medication they wanted me on and the doctor was about to write out a prescription before I finally got a chance to speak up and tell her it wasn't happening. :\

          Haven't done a stress test, but I had an EKG and it was normal. I've had all kinds of tests and nothing has come of them. The pains aren't related to stress on my heart I don't think. Like, they don't get worse when I exercise, they're just constantly there at varying degrees. Everybody tells me it's anxiety or indigestion and then they send me on my way but I really don't think that's the case.

            i didn't notice if you had your thyroid tested. a messed up thyroid can cause wacked out cholesterol. it could also explain chest pains. just a thought.

              some people have posted about chest pains due to not enough copper intake (which can also lead to high LDL levels i believe), but you are already taking a supplement so i wonder if it will just take some time to 'kick in.' if you do a forum search about it you may find more info; stabby has posted about it a lot iirc. here's a related article: Whole Health Source: Copper and Cardiovascular Disease

                I'm really sorry you had this experience! What is your height/weight? You said you always feel like crap - could you elaborate on that? It could be that something else is going on. I certainly feel for you. 18 is too young for statins!

                  Have you had your gallbladder checked out? I was having crazy constant chest pain when it acted up after eating high fat foods. The pain could be a dull ache, or a constant sharp stabbing. ER doctors kept asking me if I've ever had a heart attack, and they ran two EKGs before some lady in the waiting suggested it was my gallbladder.

                  I started having gallbladder attacks at the age of 16 (yay for being crazy overweight and unhealthy all my life)- and finally was diagnosed at 22. Check it out, to at least rule it out. Good luck with finding out what's happening in your body.

                    I would consider asking for a retest with a longer time between a reasonable meal, and the test. It could affect the results I think. Whenever I got bad blood work back, my doctor would tell me to clean up my eating for a week, then come back for retests. Things usually wound up much closer to normal.

                      I was meaning to ask about that, and some other things as well like CRP, but I became so flustered during the visit by the doctor's overzealous statin pushing and fat bashing that I completely forgot. I mean, she was seriously going off. She kind of had this look like she was trying to hide her disgust at the amount of fat I was consuming. It was a little unnerving.

                      I believe LDL was calculated.

                      I was wondering about how long copper supplementation takes to kick in as well, if that is in fact the problem. I've seen a few of Stabby's posts on it, and I know there are some people here who've cured their chest pains with it, which is why I decided to start taking it.

                      If any of you are reading this, would you care to share how long it took to start working?

                      My height it 6'3" and my weight is currently sitting around 185.

                      Pre-primal I was dealing with joint pain, fatigue, brain fog, constant migraines and light-headedness, testicular pain, anxiety / depression, and some digestive issues as well.

                      Since starting primal / paleo much of that has cleared up, but I seem to have acquired a whole new host of problems. Constipation, abdominal pain (feels like a gnawing / burning / twisting sensation that starts near my right ribcage and radiates) and abdominal soreness, chest pains / tightness, muscle spasms, and my anxiety has worsened significantly. All of these issues seem constant, they let up at times but never fully, and at other times they're bad enough that I lose focus. I know some of this probably has to do with all of the stress / anxiety I've been under, but it feels like something else is definitely going on. I think it's a case of the problems causing the anxiety and not vice versa.

                        Maybe you are taking too much betaine HCl and it is causing heartburn - similar sometimes to chest pains. How much protein are you eating with your meals when taking HCl?

                        How long have you been taking 10,000 iu of vit D3 - were you low? Vitamin D3 regulates immune system so may suppress immune system if was overactive - maybe why WBCs low?? Maybe taking too much?

                        I would cut down on fat for a bit.

                          Yeah, gallbladder was my first concern. I had both a CT scan and ultrasound done to look for any problems there and everything came back normal.

                          Thanks for the suggestion, Elaine. I think that would be a good idea. I was kind of mad at myself for ignoring food all day and then eating so much so late, I really should have just waited until after the test. The fact that the results would have been ignored if I had eaten 30 minutes later makes me a little wary of them, but they're still worrisome.

                          Doesn't feel like any heartburn I've ever had. It's hard to describe, but I'd say it alternates between a tearing / splitting kind of pain, like a wedge is driving itself into my chest, and a sore tightness. I also had these pains long before I started taking the betaine HCl. I actually seem to be more prone to heartburn without it. Protein consumption varies greatly, anywhere from 40-100g per meal usually.

                          I've been taking vitamin D for a long time now, maybe a year, but I only started taking 10,000 like four months ago. Before that it was 2,000-4,000 daily. I don't get much sunlight and I have dark skin, so I assumed a deficiency but never tested for one. I wasn't aware that vit D could suppress the immune system, I thought it only improved it?

                            Vitamin D3 regulates the immune system (changed my comment). So if immune system overactive would regulate it by suppressing. You should check your vitamin D levels.

                            Just thinking of more possibilities - too much vitamin D3 may cause chest pains.

                              now i definitely think you need to have your thyroid tested. i was about your age when my thyroid freaked out on me. my cholesterol shot up to 270 (to this day i've never had it go over 200 and it usually hovers around 160). i really hope that you find some answers.

                              do you have any tenderness below your adam's apple, or any swelling? any chance you've had mono? bouts with mono can trigger thyroid disease.
