  • Vegan to Paleo: The Journey of a Lifetime

I posted here last week, because, after many years in the vegan/vegetarian/raw communities, I found some health problems beginning to crop up and I went on the hunt for answers.

Thanks to encouragement from forum members, I am now using myself as a human guinea pig to carry out a 30 day trial of the primal diet. Big deal for me - never done anything like this before.

The address on my website where you can read my trial is here (I'm 4 days in and so far it's been extremely interesting)...

Paleo Diet Experiment: A Former Vegan Gives It A Try for 30 Days

Welcome any comments or feedback from those more experienced with this lifestyle. Unfortunately, the vegan community has already gotten wind of what I'm doing and so I'm getting some heat, but I can take it.

Thanks guys! I'm still stunned (and knocking on wood) that I haven't ended up with carb flu and that my body is responding so well. Many thanks to the forum members who urged me to give this trial a shot...

I love this quote of yours: "It's amazing how we can blind ourselves so willingly to the truth, how a belief system as deeply rooted as high carb/low fat was for me, can insidiously work to keep us from perceiving what's happening right in front of our faces."

THIS. YES. Go you. I'm already cheering over here.
Primal eating in a nutshell: If you are hungry, eat Primal food until you are satisfied (not stuffed). Then stop. Wait until you're hungry again. Repeat.

                      This one was mine....

when the evidence contradicts the belief system, smart people believe the evidence and ditch the belief system.
P.S. The sleep issue will work itself out :thumbsupsmiley:

P.P.S. I need a thumbs up smiley dammit, I can't operate without it......

Wow, great writing, I can't wait to see how it goes for you! Day 3 was the hardest for me too, I think that's when the sugar cravings really start to ramp up. Thinking about sharing your blog on facebook, but not sure how my vegetarian friends would take it. Hmmm...

P.S. Insomnia has been a big issue for me too, it has been 2.5 months and I'm finally starting to feel like I could fall into a more normal schedule if it wasn't for the toddler and the night shift hubby.

Actually, and not to be a jerk, but no, it was mine. (see comment near the bottom of http://www.marksdailyapple.com/forum/thread30218-3.html). EDIT: Oh, I think you meant it was your favorite quote - my bad. I thought you were saying it was your words. *hangs head in knee-jerkheaded shame*

Fruitlover, the sleep issue is that you're going into ketosis. Being in ketosis means you don't need as much sleep, and for the first few days, you're going to be wired. Your body is going "Fuel? Fuel that doesn't make me sleepy? WOW!"

Oh that makes SO much sense! I've been going in and out of ketosis the last couple weeks, no wonder I've been having off and on insomnia!

Good luck on your journey!!! I am excited to hear all about it.

I was vegan for many years before finding the primal blueprint. I don't think it is that big of a leap if you are vegan because you want to be healthy. (not a save the animals vegan) I like to think of those years as a stepping stone on my way to being healthy because it was way better than fast food and candy.
