  • IF + Coffee Alternatives

    Hi All!

I have been cutting down on my coffee consumption lately and I love the results. However, going caffeine free on IF days makes fasting nearly impossible for me. I get so incredibly hungry that skipping meals is a serious struggle.

So, my question is if anybody out there uses any alternative appetite suppressants while fasting. I am not even sure if there are any primal suppressants besides caffeine, but I would be interested to hear everyone's thoughts.

I'm sorry, but nobody on here is allowed to IF of discuss IFing anymore because DFH thinks that none of us know what we are doing in that department and he knows best.

But seriously fasting takes time to get used to. I would say no on the appetite suppressants and to have patients if you'd like to learn to IF. When you're used to eating at a certain time one's body releases the hormone grehlin to signal that it's time to eat. If your body is not used eating at a certain time it won't don't do that.

Try Yerba Maté. It has a caffeine-like effect and suppresses hunger. It's full of antioxidants (more than green tea even) and you won't crash an hour later.

So Yerba Mate doesn't have caffeine? I have drank it on and off for a few years, but I just assumed that it still had caffeine.

Also, I've been IFing for a few years now, but always with the aid of coffee. I am not new to it, I am just new to doing it without coffee.

Depends who you talk to. It's different than coffee's caffeine.
All i can tell you is the effect from it is VASTLY different.
Here's a little background on Mate

Is there a particular reason you want to fast without caffeine?

Rooibos tea supposedly helps suppress appetite. I use it while IFing. Lots of antioxidants, etc.

Well, since going primal, i've been having a lot of acid reflux trouble. drinking copious amounts of coffee seems to make the issue worse, so I have been trying to limit my intake as much as I can.

Oh really? Does it seem to suppress your appetite?

That makes sense. You could use decaf mate or green tea, but I just embrace the hunger- listening to the signal without emotion. It usually passes pretty quickly.

Seems to, but it could be the bit of cream I put in it, lol!

I actually don't get very hungry when doing 24 hour fasts as long as I keep my carbs lowish when I eat. (under 50 g/day)

Oh, and I stay well-hydrated during my fasts. That makes a huge difference!

I drink green tea all day at work, but I really don't have hunger issues on the weeks when I'm not drinking tea either.
