  • Coconut oil, is organic really that important on this one?

So I'm still fairly new to this whole primal thing and I want to buy some coconut oil but i'm a little put off by the cost of the organic stuff.

I did find that you can get coconut oil which has added beta caratine (good for you, right) and no other additives sold as popcorn oil though. It's not organic but from what I can tell it is 100% coconut oil...

Price is only $0.164/oz from Amazon.com if you buy a gallon (and free supersaver shipping)
The best price I can find for organic stuff is about $0.47/oz

    Thats a huge savings.

    So, opinions on this one?

Search for a recent thread discussing this. The short answer is no.

Thanks Karin. I did dig around before putting the post up but I'm not seeing the post you mention. Can you link it here?

http://www.marksdailyapple.com/forum/thread28669.html I looked it up and it actually talks about coconut milk, but the answer is the same.

I don't think getting organic is that important for coconut oil, but you may want to make sure that the popcorn oil on Amazon is not hydrogenated.

The page for it doesn't specify if it is hydrogenated but it does melt at 72 degrees F...

I bought some really cheap coconut oil at Wal-Mart (it was next to the Crisco ...... Its called LouAna, I plan on using it for my dry skin and hair and buying some of the better cold-pressed organic stuff on Amazon (Nutiva). It turns out the Amazon stuff is about the same price per oz.

The popcorn coconut oil is disgusting. It doesn't taste or smell like coconut oil. I suggest you skip it and get the good stuff. It may seem too expensive but its worth it. if you stick to just eating it, it will last longer.

Go with Tropical Traditions. They rock! I got a BOGO deal recently. My referral # is 7625207 if you decide to try them.

Considering that coconut oil is a staple of my diet (maybe six or seven tablespoons a day?) I figure it's important for it to be top quality, so I go with the Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin coconut oil. Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil - Certified Organic from Tropical Traditions They also have a FAQ page that will probably tell you everything you need to know about coconut oil. Buying it in the 5-gallon containers makes it considerably cheaper.

Also, on your first order, they include a book all about Virgin Coconut Oil (at least mine came with one)

Has anyone tried Swad brand coconut oil? It's sold in an Indian grocer near my house, only 4 bucks per jar. Definitely not organic but given that coconuts have one of the thickest shells of any fruit I don't care too much about that, but how likely is this oil to contain other chemicals? The packaging doesn't say anything.

The first coconut oil I bought was from GNC. It was Virgin, and organic, I think, but everything that I cooked with it tasted really good. Then DH got the LuAna, it doesn't have any flavor, and is not virgin, and doesn't say cold pressed, I think it is gross, but we're finishing the jar, then I will get something better too.

Amazon has Aloha Nu organic virgin coconut oil by the gallon with free shipping.
I'll buy the idea that the flavor profile on the non-virgin stuff is way worse, that makes some sense.
I'll have to think about it, its a lot of money to drop on something all at once when I'm just getting started on this whole low-carb/high fat thing.
I'm also trying to get a veg garden planted for the first time and I think I'll focus on that for now, maybe the coconut oil needs to wait til winter
