  • Help with My Morning Coffee

I'm a religious morning coffee drinker... 2 cups of decaf every morning. And each cup must have 1/4-1/2 cup of some form of dairy. I've tried canned coconut milk and didn't like it. I like sweetened vanilla almond milk (hate the unsweetened one)... but it has sugar. That leaves me with heavy cream, half and half, and milk. What's the best choice if my goal is weight loss? Can drinking that much dairy every day stall my weight loss? Do I give up coffee? Any advice is very appreciated!

1/4 of half and half isn't *that* much calories from dairy...

Cutting back on coffee probably isn't a bad idea but you don't have to cut it out completely...

have you tried stevia with the unsweetened almond milk? I like to add a dash of cream, a tiny amount of coconut oil, and stevia. Tastes very good.

That little amount of cream isn't going to do you in especially if you're eating primal. I drink coffee daily and I usually have half and half in my coffee but I also add some type of sweetener, whether its a syrup or sugar. I'm not giving up everything that I love because then I'll feel deprived and will not want to do it at all.

I didn't like coconut cream in my coffee either. Made it taste sour. As someone who loves a little coffee with her cream, I'd recommend heavy whipping cream. A couple+ tablespoons, even for this girl, is usually juuuust right. As a side note, many brands have carageenan and crud added as thickeners so check labels. The purer the better.
Heck no, I don't want no dang turkey bacon!

1/4 to 1/2 cup per cup of coffee? I thought I was the only one that had to have a cow handy when I drink coffee!!! (hubby loved to make fun of me with that)
I hear ya on the other coffee creamers--yuk-- is all I can say. I've gave a good attempt to switch to coconut or nut milks, even soy creamer and just wasn't the same. I have a problem with dairy so if I do have coffee I have weened myself down to a half a teaspoon of non dairy creamer and am trying to go black. (I know, so not paleo) What has made the biggest difference is switching to Kona coffee. The taste is great and I have become used to no sugar and very little creamer. I was told by several coffee enthusiasts that if I would try a great coffee that I'd not want the cream or sugar. I think they are right. I'm hoping within the next month I'll be accustomed to drinking it black.
I'm one of those people that dairy, even a little bit makes a big difference in the way I feel and once I stopped it the puffiness in my face went away. I had starbucks latte with milk the other day and had horrible reflux all day and then woke up with a puffy face the next morning. I miss the rich taste of cream so much that sometimes it's just not worth drinking it without it. I have started to drink a lot more teas and have really enjoyed them.
I learned a valuable lesson with the first steer I sent to slaughter. I should have named him Hamburger and not Snookers.

I've come to love my coffee black, but I really don't think that little amount of cream will derail you.

I switched from lowfat milk to heavy cream for my daily mug of tea. I don't have any issues with dairy so I don't worry about it. Dairy is "to each his own" according to the Primal Blueprint.

Yup, and I use quite a bit in coffee as I drink about 4 times the amount of coffee that the OP does. That said, I don't eat ice cream, pizza, pasta etc where lots of dairy and other crap would come from pre-primal. As such, it is a net gain and therefore weight loss.

As for stalling the OP's weightloss...are you still losing weight? If so, then nope it isn't. If you are stuck then it COULD be a factor but it could be any number of other things you are eating/doing/not doing etc.

I still use cream in coffee and tea. If you don't have lactose and casein issues, I don't think it is a big deal. We shouldn't be drinking tons of calories (per Mark) but even he uses cream in his coffee in the morning.

I use cream. I find I don't need that much. I probably used 1/4 to 1/2 cup of milk before. Now I just use a splash of cream. It's so rich and yummy.

Thanks for your input! I really enjoy eating this way. I feel so much better. It's just tricky figuring out what stalls my weight loss. I've given up most dairy but still do cream in my coffee and eat about 1-2 oz of cheese a couple days a week. Perhaps I should be looking more towards my one bottle of wine per week habit..... but that's even harder to deal with than my morning coffee. Sigh!

I use HWC for my coffee, and when I can, my lattes/breves/whatever you want to call them.
