  • Corporate America and its TRUE cost on nutrition.

    Ok well i have been trying this out and to say that I am blown away would be pretty much a understatement. A little bit about me I like to eat, your not 5"10 and 265 without an appetite i think to say anything else would just be a understatement. I have been in sales for my entire life and got my degree in marketing. I always struggled with my weight and tried several thing. I went to the gym fairly regularly and would work out hard. I remember going to the gym with my older sis who btw is a killer sister, and boy did i sweat. And when i mean sweat i would sweat so much it really kind was embarrassing. Not really kinda primal but yeah. Ok fast forward I am not feeling very good, not sleeping good at all so i go to the doctor and he gives me a antidepressant so i can sleep better but i still do feel right so i go off and on it. I still go to the gym pretty irregularly i mean when you work for a fortune 500 company it is pretty demanding, lots of working, lots of client lunches and the early morning meetings with the donuts and the fresh oj and maybe a occassional cinamon roll oh boy i loved all those. Hell i took pride in making sure of even taking over leftovers. I love donuts. So a couple months pass and instead of getting better it progressively gets worse, and thats my health i feel exhaust all the time, definitely have some stomach probs, and just feel horrible. I mean lets not lie after working all day coming home and going to the gym when you feel like crap first of all sucks, and 2nd of all i am still hungry. Christ it feels like i crossed the trek with pioneers pushing a handcart when i barely got in and out of my car and was exhausted going on appointments, let alone having to climb stairs to my work. Yes we as a generation are changing and maybe not all for the better.

    So here is my theory after learning about nutrition. Scientist have came up with a way to make something that is sweeter than sugar, Stevia, nutrasweet, aspartame, High Fructose Corn Syrup that not only makes you crave it and have withdrawl symptoms but it also inhibits your appetite. Its super cheap to produce, its highly addictive, and sure there are other alternatives to sugar, none of which is healthy do the insulin spikes it cause, but they dont care. As consumers we work hard we typically work anywhere from 30-50 hours a week to provide for our family. We then take our money and buy certain things that bring happiness and life to our lifes. So we go down and we buy a hamburger that has tons of fructose corn syrup in it we eat it it spikes our insulin up to 165 so our body absolutely loves it. It like being with the women of your dreams that does everthing you want, even tiger woods got in trouble. He was addicted to that level of satisfaction, and he had everything. So are we still hungry yes we eat some fries once again spikes, and soda and on and on and then eventually our body either limits us do to the feeling we are so bloated that we feel like slaughtered cows, or we throw up or we get sick. It inhibts liptin so you eat more, 33 percent of the calories that are high fructose go straight to that part your trying to tone down. And worst of all it grasps its arms around us even more, because then eat a piece of fruit thats good but it never satisfies our appetite, so we have to have waffles to satisfy our appetite hours later and we still feel like we are starving. Its like we have a storage tank that would rival a waterbuffalo but we are still hungry. So this entire time instead of having a normal insulin level ours is alternating from 80-160 all day as our insulin is doing its best to get this sugar out of our body. So it causes extreme highs and lows, you have your gatorade which jacks it up super high only to sip on your water and have a urning for some more high fructose corn syrup with artifical flavorings, this one is low calorie though. Water never tastes the same because it has a 0 baseline and gatorade is off the charts, plus it has salt which makes you crave even more, so definitely need some more.
    We do this all to satisfy our appetite, we slowly but surely put on the pounds we count the calories, weight our food, and i wonder if the pioneers, or if rich people do the same. You watch shows that always show how satisfying a coke is, or how fun a candybar is, and it is. All the while your going up and down.




    Back on to these "food companies" So they found a formula that is addictive, cheap to make, and creates what they want. I am sure they probably paid a small amount of money to make it even more addictive and even sweeter which is all there engineered sweet. Its marketing 101 the cheaper to make, the greater the desire, the larger the profit.

    So we take our money and spend it on food and goodies and snacks all while these food and health companies get even more fatter pockets.


    Think of this way our pioneers walked all the way across the united states while most people can walk around the block or run a minute under 10 minutes.

    Humans used to run after because they cant pant and run at the same time. If you can run 6 miles under 38 minutes you can kill a deer.

    Shredded cheese has sawdust in it and wood chips that are ground down.

    When taco bell was questioned shares plummeted you know what that tells me, america cares. America cares what is in there food, how it is prepared, and when we bust our ass and work hard to buy something we want it to benefit us not only in enjoyment, but also nutritionally as well.

    Its simple. So here is what i recommend if your having weight problems if the pioneers crossing the planes didnt eat it, dont let it touch your lips. Admit that your addicted to a man made sugar, and eliminate it immediately. The body is a resillent creature and with enough time it will rid itself of this poison.

    Do you ever notice when you go to a place and eat too much food with high fructose corn syrup and other man made fillers your body wants it out like NOW? Doesnt happen with food that was put on this earth for us to ENJOY. Did i say that ENJOY. I wonder actually when was the last time you ate something so nutrient rich, and so delicious you actually enjoyed it know its going to make you feel better, be stronger, and help you achieve your health goals. Whatever that is. If its to be the worlds strongest competitor tryouts or to run a mile quicker, or maybe sleep better, or have energy instead of having to binge on energy drinks.

    So from a marketing background why are these companies putting filler in there products, cambell soup tomatos soup- high fructose corn syrup, gatorade, coke and on and on. Simply put to increase there profits, make it highly addictive, and i cant sum that up enough if they were to change all of the food out there to healthy food the cost would go up exponentially. We as consumers can eat more calories today then our parents parents ever could for the same amount of money hands down. It takes longer time, energy and effort to produce a better product. Case in point coke came out with a new formula that had more salt, and more sugar it was the new coke. All of these energy drinks or soda have one thing in common. Having worked with one of the largest energy drink companies in the industry I found out one thing, they have everything down to the penny. They know how much and what ingredients and if they have a choice of putting something highly addictive or with similar ingridents which are cheaper. Guess what they do. You bet your ass they could care less if your trying to be healthy. They care about feeling there pockets making it ultra sweet, and if your lucky you will wake up in the back of a casino with a leather jacket and your fat butt to prounce around. Try to go off the high fructose corn syrup or carb diet and you get carb flu? Ever smoked ever stopped smoking? Then you can relate.

    Let me say this so i dont offend anyone, it takes work to be fat, and i am not just saying eating, which btw today i eat more than i have ever eaten in my entire life hands down. But to carry around the weight. My new family tradition is to wake up every saturday morning with a backpack with the amount of weight i have lost. Little in life do we have to do, however i think this will be a lifetime habit, i think it does two things it gives compassion for where you were at, for fat people to look at them and to know that you were in there shoes, and second of all its a constant reminder to stay focused, and before i eat anything i wonder if this is going to help me or hurt me get closer to my goals.

    Look being fat sucks, it makes you depressed, tired, and moody, it puts extreme pressure on your organs and bladder. You have higher levels of cortisol, and worst of all you were designed to be fat. We were designed to be lean, less cortisol levels, and run. Not be cramped in a office for 14 to 16 hours a day to work really hard so we can buy crappy food and sell our youth and happiness to these trolls that committ fraud. But then we get older and wiser and realize what is important. Most of the times its too late. Too much damage is done because we didnt make the time we needed for ourself. The good news is under all of this we have legs built for running and strong legs at that we have been training our body for years with the extra weight we have been carrying around.

    Growing up has us thinking that happiness and health are having huge dinners or bbq and swigging down a fresh one, or hanging out with our friends to feel good and not endure the pain because we have neglected our bodies for so long. Hip pain, stomach issues, mental fogginess, swelling, chaffing etc. I have a big update, this isnt willy wonka, that is just a dream. However I will say this it can be. It takes time to reset the clock enjoy natures fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs and even dairy and with time your body will heal. It absolutely sucks having to read every ingredient when you go to the store. Its like playing a lottery oh my hell what did i just find. What i would like to see is a healthy food isle where you can just go down and pick up healthy food that is going to improve your life instead of drain your energy. Thats going to help you lean up a little bit instead of being toxic and producing ethanol in your body. Excercise is definitely important but let me tell you a little secret if your 50 or even 100lbs overweight your excercising non stop carrying around that extra weight. It seems the food industry needs to go back to the basics.


    There is the healthy food isle and its called the fruits and vegetables, go fishing in a healthy lake or pond, buy organic fruits and vegetables, eat bacon and avocados and whatever to your delight. But if our pioneers didnt eat it while crossing the plains dont eat it. I really think we were put on this earth to enjoy it, share this life with your family and friends so that the word can grow. Tell overweight people your story regardless if your worried about offending them or not. Its time to start speaking out. Sometimes you have to shake the candy machine to get it out. And most importantly we need to start with our youth. So they dont have to endure the trials and tribulations our america currently is.

      I agree these companies are part of the problem - but the other part is America's ignorance of how studies are conducted, that correlation does not equal causation, how our metabolism operates, lack of research and skepticism of "research" that shows these products to be healthy. They follow blindly like a heard of cattle, either not caring or not knowing how to conduct proper research on their own of what's best for our bodies. I would love to believe people care, but everyday I drive by McDonalds and guess what? ITS ALWAYS PACKED. If people wanted to make a real change in their health these places would be out of business because there is not doubt about it: whether you're grain free, dairy free, calorie counting, Atkins, Paleo or Primal, those places are bad, in any context. So if they know it's sooo bad, then why are they there? The only logical conclusion would be they didn't care enough about their own health to pack a lunch the day before. And guess what? Those companies KNOW American's want to feel good with minimal effort or thought on their part and that they don't really care or are too blind to see for themselves what they are consuming.

      I believe it's more the uneducated, uncaring American's fault than the major companies because if people refused to buy those products as a result of conducting their own research on what is good and what isn't when considering the company brands behind the "healthy" product, these companies would be forced to do something, or go belly up. But most average people "can't live without bread." I hear this so much it makes me sick.

        I agree wholeheartedly, we learn nutrition in school but as someone who trained for the worlds strongest man, you have to find what works for you. I listen to my body way more than i ever have in my life. I just count my blessings that i found this site and plan on sharing it with my friends and family that have struggled with weight for as long as i have. The reason they cant stop bread is because they are addicted to it. Addicted to the high fructose corn syrup or other sweeteners. They have taught there body to use that as fuel versus something that is natural. And they have perfected doing it.

          I think part of it is that the American consumer has placed undeserved faith in our government. Most people seem to believe that the government wouldn't let McDonalds or Cargill or their local supermarket sell them products that aren't safe. They believe the USDA food pyramid is based on good science. Otherwise, how could our government tell 300 million people to eat this way.

          As for the pioneers crossing the plains, they got sick and died a lot. I'd rather eat what the Lakota ate.

            You could write theories for days on what is wrong and how it got that way.

            An outline should include-

            -Economics of feeding a lot of people with product that is grown here (corn, wheat, dairy).
            -Making up "facts" that support a certain food pyramid that happens to push what is being farmed here (corn, wheat, dairy).
            -Support of dietary theories that don't upset the status quo too much. (Avoid calories, eat balanced, moderation, portion control, sugar is not so bad etc,) These are weak theories that don't upset the status quo too much.
            -There is a very American way of thinking about private ownership and rights that leads to companies investing in "the hook" (the product) that they can sell, protect, profit from, and believe in. It happens in medicine too. It's all about product...finding a unique product, branding it, making people believe it is better, more healthy, and protecting that product. Product product product.. Grok didn't even know what branding was.

            I doubt that there is some conspiracy about sweetners and addiction. People have a sweet tooth anyway. Look at any sidewalk shop in Europe-its all candy and sweet rolls. What is going on is that when there is a concern about sugar, the people developing alternates want to exploit it and say "use our product, eat more and gain less!" Product product product...

              Stielow, you hit the nail on the head. Hopefully you are young enough to enjoy many years of good health! I'm 57 and am paying the price of inflammation in the form of osteoarthritis and lumbar disc isssues.

              I will join the ranks of Robo Moms in June with a hip replacement. Hopefully I have dodged the bullet on heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Two of my three kids in their 20s have embraced the primal lifestyle, so I feel good about that.

              P.s. I was a former financial manager for Coca Cola and you can bet they manage their ingredient budgets down to $.0001 per gallon. And they stay on top of the focus groups regarding product appeal.

                I stopped going down the aisles in the grocery store and it all (for the most part) magically disappeared.

                What people fail to realize is that time has value and when you trade it away for convenience there is a hidden cost.

                  For anyone with joint pain knee pain and or hip pain read the book born to run. Running flat footed decreases the stress on your body 1/12 of what nice nike shoes do, you even seem to walk a little bit unique instead of landing on your heal you land on the outside of your foot and roll to the inside. I actually for the first time in my life enjoy it. So perspective if you can walk a mile you can walk 12 if you can run 1 mile you can run 12 with the same impact to your body. Matter of fat a lady ran a 100 mile endurance run in 15 hours barefoot, either vibram five fingers or fila skeletoes help protect your feet from the elements. With my background in cars it astounds me how the average consumer is tricked time and time again.

                  Whatever you weight times 12 times is the impact put onto your heel which translates to your knees hips and feet. So if you are overweight 40lbs you are putting 480lbs more force on your joints.

                  Dont believe me. Hop on the treadmill with 40lbs, then comment. I did it this morning. And it kicked my butt, literally. I usually where my skeletoes which btw were 42.00 at kohls and i absolutely love them.

                  Funny thing is since i have lost my weight my hip has stopped the sharp pains from time to time. Probably inflamation from all the sugar, being 40lbs over weight, the sodium or a combination of all 3. Good news is though doing away from sugar is easier the more time you are away.


                  Adriana probably can voice how corp jobs just shovel crap in front of your face, you work your entire life most people retire with a body that isnt what they want, and they die old and miserable with alot of sugar intake throughout there lifes. Even if it was poison, the government would never admit it.

                  So really inflamation, obesity, cancer, tumours, insulin spikes etc. Other than taste satisfaction are there any other benefits of sugar in any amount? I mean dont you think if you just got your natural sugar from fruits and vegetables that would suffice.


                  And as far as the pioneers crossing they died of malnutrition. I bet today if we had to move continents for a flood many a people would be stuck a couple blocks from there house or not even ABLE or Willing to get up and move. It is a lifestyle change. But long term brings you way more happiness than all the ups and downs sugar causes.

                  My eyes are now open. Its ironic people get dressed up to go out to eat. Maybe its just to prepare for the End. I hope everyone whos life has been changed by eating healthy talks about it. And yeah you will have skeptics, but its time to talk about it and put it on the table. Its not polite shows a lack of caring for another person period.

                    Part of the problem is that people are given a faulty set of tools to address their weight and health issues. Most people try to address their weight, but find the hunger and restriction to be overwhelming, so they become despondent, and give in to the addiction. Low fat, high carb just programs them for failure.

                    If I hadn't been lucky enough to stumble on to MDA I'd still be one of them.

                      Jammies, I agree But you stumbled upon this site because you were probably concerned with your health and decided for yourself based upon studies and evidence that this was the best way to live. I would be the same way if I hadn't of been highly concerned with health. I think there should be more concern for it and less trust given to large corporations. Skepticism in this case is healthy!

                        Very true!!

                        I just wish the path the health didn't need to be such an uphill battle. I spent 15 years searching for health. Even when you are willing to go against CW and government info, it sure can take a LOT of work and dedication to figure it out.

                          thing is...

                          - people dont care. tell them how to be healthy and they dont care. its not their priority. i know VERY FEW people who value their food quality and nobody rarely makes the connection. the thought that their food may be harmful doesnt cross their mind. i work with an assload of diabetics and obese people who know what they need to do but are not at all interested in changing
                          take for example my parents, both healthy enough and neither overweight. they drink beer, they eat donuts and king cake. my mom has an interest in cooking and loves to serve bigass loads of food to people like fried chicken and mashed taters, gumbo, jambalya. she is interested in how far she can stretch a lb of meat over the couse of meals. they are HAPPY, social, mentally fine and rarely get sick. never, in a million years would either be interested in making healthy food let alone be able to afford it. it just makes no sense to them i would love a rib eye but when youve marinated it in a bottle soybean oil marinade i lose interest.
                          unless you take a vested interest in history, exercise and food youre never gonna have that desire to see how good you CAN feel

                          i have a feeling doctors dont push real food as much because they know its a dead end road. telling a diabetic on food stamps that they cant shop at salvage grocery anylonger is simply not feasible. what the doctor CAN do however is provide a pill to the sufferer enabling them to live their life

                          same for big name companies and food chains. they know it aint healthy, but they know if anythign happens, the doctor has a pill. the pharmacies are the same way

                          in the end its very true some people will suffer less stress, less inflammation and less unhappiness if they want a coke with peanuts in it and have a coke with peanuts in it. stressing people would prolly be one of the worst case scenarios out there- stress in itself is at the root of the obesity epidemic(via food and life but still)

                          if someone told the US what really happens in their body when you eat X Y and Z this place would be a nuthouse of OMG I cant have donuts and sandwiches and blah la de da. kinda like if the government or army were to tell us what is really going down in the middle east war, america would turn into a nuthouse

                            I mean dont you think if you just got your natural sugar from fruits and vegetables that would suffice.
                            You still have to watch the intake of fruits in particular. I'm reading Deep Nutrition and found this interesting tidbit:
                            A colleague pointed out that she'd found, after advising her patients to eat the recommended three to six servings of fruit a day, that doing so raised their triglycerides to unhealthy levels.
                            Another interesting point in Deep Nutrition is how nutrients are shown to have an impact two generations away. So in part your good or bad health may be related to how your grandparents ate. Other factors such as bone structure are directly related to maternal health. This is not to say that you can't dramatically improve your health with changes in your nutrition, you can, but some things were programmed into your genes well before you came along.

                            I highly recommend anybody of reproductive age read Deep Nutrition by Catherine and Luke Shanahan. The time to take prenatal vitamins and improve your nutrition is before conception.

                              Well something ironic happened today while i was taking my dog for a walk. Look i dont like walking, i have never liked walking i was pretty big for so long that my hip hurt, and would get winded heavy. So last night i took my dog for a walk, had some sausages and a couple eggs and alot of water. I remember so vividly that 2 months ago had i ate a heavy fat meal like that i would be sooooo tired. So i took him for a walk like the many that have been. And for some reason i looked at my little jack russel who btw is primal too now, nothing but fish, carrots rice, salmon, swordfish, eggs, and even a strawberry or two which cured all his grain problems of poor hair, and his constant need for food. Poor little thing. Anyways i notice something kinda weird the faster i went the happy he went. After dropping close to 38 lbs in the past little while my high was 263 and now i am down to 227, i love to run, it honestly is starting to feel instead of a abrahms tank taking off, a 747 jet getting ready to take off. It was the weirdest experience. Running to me now feels so natural, i got some fila skeletoes which are similar to vibrams, but the faster i went the more bird hunter skippy and myself felt. Like i was bringing out a beast within.

                              On a lighter note i dont think people understand calories or carbs or sugars. I definitely eat more bacon, and sausage and eggs and even skim milk then i have ever had in my life and the weight just seems to shed. I also got some ketosis strips and when i work out real hard it looks like its burning the sugar out, and when its super slow there are more ketones floating around.

                              I also came to the conclusion that most of this is routine, if you set up a routine to do a certain think aka eat alot of sugar go to the movies put chocolate syrup in your mocha etc it almost becomes a "tradition" growing up i remember going to buffet bars in vegas and other places, never when we were home and i could eat so much. Its amazing how much that lipton is deactivated with high fructose corn syrup and dextrose, and other sweeteners, it seems like you could never get full and so you would always be starving. Hell for breakfast now i can eat 5 eggs some beans some corn and maybe a couple strips of bacon and i pretty much feel full for the entire day. Before that would keep me good for such a short time. I also notice when i sweat which has been reduced at least 50 percent or more the smell is so diffrent. Before i would sweat so bad my shirt would smell worse than hiroshima. I mean i had to soak my shirts in vinegar. Only thing i can think is so much rotting sugar and highfructose corn syrup in my body producing ethanol and its venting. Anyone else notice that?
