  • Sunflower Butter

I've seen posts about almond butter and other nut butters but what about sunflower butter? Yesterday, looking in my pantry, my options were Jiff peanut butter or organic Trader Joe's sunflower butter. Of those choices, I figured the sunflower butter was better...but is it primal or just the better of two bad options?

All nuts (except macadamicas) are high in omega-6 and consumption should be limited (don't get a significant portion of your calories from nuts). I think it's a toss-up between PB and sunflower-butter, but I might be missing some important factoid that makes one more appropriate than the other.

Discalimer: I love all nuts and nut butter and eat them in moderation.

In my mind, Sunbutter is better because it is a seed butter, whereas Peanuts are a legume and should be avoided. That's the way I understand it at least.

The sunflower butter is a much better option. Jiff has all kinds of crap added to it. As to whether the sunflower butter is primal, I think it depends on what else is in it.

The only problem is that TJ's sunbutter has cane juice in it..

With this, it wouldn't work for something more restrictive, like Whole 30, but I think in moderation, it would be fine For Primal.

Okay. My thinking was much organic and much less crap in it was way better than Jiff. That seems to be the consensus here so as far as that went, it's good. But I have to be careful about what else is in it even if there's not much in it. I wonder if I can find it somewhere without the cane juice? I really like sunflower butter.

I don't think I've ever eaten macadamia nuts so I'll put them on my shopping list to try.

2 tablespoons has 3g of sugar in it, which is pretty minimal. Personally, that doesn't keep me from slopping some on a banana. Of course, many people here won't even eat a banana. It's up to you where you set your limits.

Just be careful that the brand you buy doesn't have bad oils in it. I think many of them are made with hydrogenated cottonseed oil, which is not the best.

Agreed! I usually eat a jar of TJ's sunbutter every 2-3 weeks, and a jar of almond butter every two weeks. TJ's has no bad oils- not sure they add any?
