  • Grass fed vs Fish for Omega 3s

    I have been looking into the benefits of getting grass fed beef, and other than the hormone free and antibiotic free issues, the other major one brought up is omega 3s.

    I have looked into the ratios on nutritiondata, and found this:

    Grass fed ground beef 100g = 88 O3, 427 O6 Nutrition Facts and Analysis for Beef, grass-fed, ground, raw
    Regular ground beef 100g = 77 O3, 53 O6 Nutrition Facts and Analysis for USDA Commodity, beef, ground, bulk/coarse ground, frozen, raw

    Compared to the whacking high ratios I get from my half can of salmon in the morning
    Canned sockeye with bones 100g = 1323 O3, 85 O6 Nutrition Facts and Analysis for Fish, salmon, sockeye, canned, without salt, drained solids with bone

    I am thinking that if getting a good O3/O6 balance is what I am looking for, grass fed meat may not be such a big issue, but staying with the fish sure is.

    Any thoughts or comments?

    I like them both for their different properties. As for the ratio I think the fish is better? But I like grass fed meat for the CLA`s

      According to cron-o-meter which is based off the nutritional information from governmental authorities it says that grass fed beef has an omega 3/6 as 1:2 while regular beef has an omega 3/6 of almost 1:10.

        I wonder if they have those listings backwards for the beef.

          In any case, there is very little omega 3/6 effect from either beef. My point is it looks it would take a whole lot of beef to up your omega 3s compared to canned salmon.

              I think you answered your own question Stick with the different canned fish for omegas. Are the other things in line with your goal? Salt content, bpa, farmed vs wild caught...stuff like that are all things I try to consider as well. I`ve really been craving herring lately. Wonder if my body is trying to tell me something

                  For beef, the omega 3's and omega 6's do not matter one bit. The omega 6 content is low enough that it just doesn't matter. Keep taking fish oil and eat your fish for the omega 3's.

                  Eat beef for the vitamins, minerals, saturated fat, CLA and protein.

                  Easy.

                    Thats what I figured, I just wondered if I was missing anything because I thought I heard grass fed touted as great for Omega 3s

                      Toad is right, we really shouldn't be relying on beef for our omega 3s. Furthermore the omega 3 in beef is actually ALA, the same kind in flax - not good. Fish and/or brains are necessary to some degree.

                        I didn't know that omega 3 in beef was ALA. Thanks Stabby. I felt much less nutritionally guilty eating grassfed beef after reading the articles from Don Matesz's blog:

                        I still try to get grassfed beef to support my local farmers and smaller, more sustainable farming in general, but I don't sweat eating conventional beef near as much as I used to.

                          Sardines packed in olive oil.....yummmmm! O-3s, protein, iron, potassium, sustainably catch, local for me. Yum, yum!!
                          Don't get me wrong, I'm down with the grassfed beef too!!

                            I'm a bit suspect of the actual omega3 content of canned fish. Having worked in a Tuna Cannery I know that the fish is cooked , then canned , then the cans go into a giant pressure cooker and are heated to a high temperature . Couldn't this significantly decrease the omega3 content ? Also , how is the content established , do they test the pre-processed fish or the finished product ?

                              Good question. I don't eat canned tuna, only canned salmon in its whole "slice". The can says a whooping 6g of omega 3 per can and the fish looks well-preserved. My inflammation is very low so something is working. I wouldn't expect much omega 3 from canned tuna, that's for sure.
