  • Cod Liver Oil

I hear alot about taking CLO if you eat alot of factory raised beef as opposed to grass fed/grass finished. What exactly is the CLO doing to counter act the factory raised beef? I know it has something to do with the Omega 3 to 6 ratio?? The PUFAS?? Does this sound right? I was doing some reading over at PaNu and couldnt find out why the CLO is beneficial when eating the factory raised beef. Also, is CLO better then the regular Fish Oil? Thanks peeps!

Cod liver oil or any fish oil is used to try to balance the omega 3's & 6's. We typically eat too much omega 6's, so we take fish oil to keep those numbers at a healthy level. Cod liver oil, imho, can be really good, but you cannot take too much because it is usually fused with vitamin e to keep the oil from oxidizing and too much vitamin can be bad. But, i think its good stuff. Iv'e been taking it and i like it, i just limit it to one serving a day. Cod liver oil and fish oil are very similar (and are used for the same purposes), i weighed my options and i thought, for my situation, that cod liver oil is the best.

My only experince of CLO is with my cat who had a bad case of oily coat, plus flaky skin/dandruff last year; we started giving him a teaspoon a day of CLO, and his coat is beautiful now, and no flakes.

I take it straight up like a man....Lol its actually lemon flavored and does not taste bad at all. The pills do not have a taste, some can taste the fish in their burps and i have experienced that, BUT i believe that is do to oxidation, which is NOT good. I use the Carlson Cod Liver oil.

cod liver oil has vitamin A and D included in it naturally. Fish oil doesn't... or if it does, it's added separately. They both have the same fat profile afaik. So if you need the vitamins, then cod liver oil is better.

I chose fish oil over CLO because I was fearful of overdosing on Vitamin A, but I read recently (I believe it was on Healthy Skeptic) that if you are getting sufficient Vitamin D, the amount of Vitamin A you can take in goes way up. Based on this new info I think I'll get CLO instead when/if I order fish oil again.

I do a teaspoon of Carlson's CLO every day. After reading all the information given by WAPF on CLO I was convinced I had to supplement with it. I have the original flavoring so my next bottle I will have to go with the lemon flavoring since the aftertaste is pretty rough to take.

People say I am on a "crazy" diet. What is so crazy about eating veggies, fruits, seafood and organ meats? Just because I don't eat whole wheat and processed food doesn't make my diet "crazy". Maybe everyone else with a SAD are the "crazy" ones for putting that junk in their system.

Carlson's lemon flavored CLO is fantastic! No fishy taste - it tastes like a lemony salad dressing.

I use the garden of life brand in lemon mint. I've read that it's a high quality brand. I hated it at first, but it's really grown on me. I take it because I hate the texture of fish (except tuna). I take a spoon a day. Even before I started primal, I took it during the winter. I never got the winter blues that I normally do. My mental state is so much better.

I'm also taking it to get more omega3s. I'm hoping to get a freezer soon and buy half of a grass fed cow.

                              Kinda OT, but kinda not

I was out grocery shopping today and they were sampling the Barleans flavored Fish Oils. I had been eyeing them a few weeks wondering if they were any good, or if they were chalky and nasty, so OF COURSE I lined up for a taste. I tried all the flavors. THEY ARE FANTASTIC! I got the lemon one. They also had pina colada and some other flavors. Mine is Omega Swirl, 720 mg with DHA & EPA/serving.

How many mg should I take each day?
