  • Red and White Meat - The Ratio...

Friends - is there a preferred ratio of red to white meat we should be consuming?

There is so much commentary around red meat being "unhealthier" than white meat. Since I am eating meat at least twice a day - should I eat white 2 or 3 to 1 etc...

    Thanks.

I eat 1:0 of red meat to white meat and I've never been in better health.

Well, that's not exactly true. I do eat salmon and other fish on occasion, so it's probably closer to 20:1 or something like that.

Would that be CW commentary? I have never read that here. I happen to like chicken and it is cheap so I would say I eat about 1:1 ratio, but I tend to eat dark meat chicken for whatever that is worth.

I haven't been to keen on chicken since going primal. I've been eating mostly beef, pork, lamb and fish. My understanding is that grass-fed red meat has a more favorable assortment of fats than chicken.

I don't think you will here any of that commentary around here. Red meat(especially grass fed) is extremely healthy with great O3:O6 ratios. Beef and Bison have become my mainstays as of late.

No doubt. Even conventional beef has a more favorable fatty acid profile than pastured chicken. The n-3:n-6 ratio is far better and CLA is great for your body.

Chris, get to the Victoria Market on a Saturday morning and revel in the aroma of all that red meat on display. Don't do this after a night on the piss (personal experience). And walk past the donut van

There is no virtue in white meat that isn't in greater supply in red meat. What you really need to worry about is not eating muscle meat exclusively. Offal, skin, tendons, marrow and bone stock should also be a regular part of your diet

I eat mostly beef. If I eat poultry, its generally dark meat. There's a 300lb pig headed for heaven with my name on it this week, I'll be splitting that with other family members but I suspect I'll be eating a fair bit of pork along with beef over the next while. MMMmmmm, the entire loin is being smoked up as back bacon.

                  Ja!

This red meat "scare" is not supported by the evidence. Studies equivocate between fresh/processed meat, burnt/baked, and even include meat consumed at fast food restaurants alongside junk food. None control for health-consciousness and it would be important because everyone has thought that red meat would kill you dead of heart disease for years and so you get the least health-conscious people save the few who are up on the research eating the least red meat and the most health-conscious people will be eating more white meat. But there are other differences to those groups that impact the data. Confounding factors are important.

Plus no data has been presented for grass fed meat which is healthier than grain-fed, although I'm not going to commit to saying that grain-fed is worse than a lack of meat or eating chicken. Those gross chicken breasts are all right, although pretty useless but chicken fat has tons of omega 6 so definitely limit it and other poultry. Beef is a great source of CLA, carnitine, carnosene, alpha-lipoic acid, choline, b vitamins, zinc, selenium and others. Importantly, it is an excellent fat.

Also let's not equivocate between beef and pork. Beef=great all of the time. Pork=better to limit to less frequent. The n-6 in pork is a problem in excess.

Beef, bison, lamb and game meat are the best meats. Poultry is meh. Eat it if you like it but got easy on the poultry fat.

Personally I think meat is meat. We eat a lot of chicken & fish during the week (cuz it's super fast to cook), and beef & pork on the weekend (which the husband handles)
