  • Just a little reminder about frankenfood

I have been eating really clean since I started PB about 3 weeks ago and doing great - lots of energy and feeling good, and one thing I noticed is that my fairly chronic headaches were gone. Saturday night my nonprimal husband wanted to prepare the ribs for dinner, so he made up a sauce using a prepared BBQ sauce, liquid smoke and a few other ingredients as a base. I figured it wouldn't be a big deal since it wasn't very much sauce.

Boy was I wrong. About an hour after dinner my first migraine in 3 weeks started, and Monday morning, I still feel the tail end of it! No more prepared BBQ sauce for me!

Since then, I looked up liquid smoke, and apparently it is a migraine inducer for some, so that is probably the culprit.

If I ever need anything to convince me to continue to eat primal, believe me, a 2 day migraine will do it!

    Primally yours,

    Karin

Are you sure it was the liquid smoke? I lot of rubs have tons of monosodium glutamate (MSG) in them. A friend gave me a rub to try on a batch of ribs that I made once and I was getting the worst headaches the next day. Since then I've been avoiding MSG as much as I can.

I second the MSG thing. I get a killer headache from it, as well as a bunch of other horrible symptoms. Sadly it seems to be in everything these days.

It could well be MSG as well - the BBQ sauce ingredient label was half torn off, so I don't even know what was in it - one way or the other, it was a painful reminder to stay away from processed foods!

I heard that MSG, salt and pepper were the "11 herbs and spices" in KFC.

MSG is always the culprit when I get a bad reaction from questionable condiments or restaurant foods. I get the headache, severe stomach cramps, nausea, and other unpleasant symptoms.

Do you have a Trader Joe's nearby? Their condiments are the best store-bought ones I've found, for when I don't have time to make my own. Their BBQ sauce is delicious and just uses molasses as sweetener. It's still pretty high in carbs, but it's got no junk oils or crazy chemicals in it.

My husband has made his own "from scratch" bbq sauce in the past and I will get him to make it from scratch again, omitting the liquid smoke because I am still not sure about it.

BBC News - 'Smoked' flavour food concerns

This is an article outlying the investigation into potential issues with liquid smoke - whether it was the thing that caused the migraine or not, it still doesn't look so great to me.

Funny as it sounds, liquid smoke is actually quite true to its name -- the same particulate matter you find in smoke, in a liquid base. I used to get headaches from smoke so I'm not surprised that liquid smoke can have that effect; I'm glad I tolerate it better these days.

Does your husband grill the ribs? Grilling with woods, like mesquite, along with the homemade bbq sauce is delicious and might take the place of the Liquid Smoke flavor for you. I make no claims as to how healthy or unhealthy grilling with seasoned woods are though! (I haven't looked into it, don't want to just in case they are horrible for me )

He cooked them in the oven, but grilling with wood sounds like a good idea. I will mention it to him, thanks!
