  • Chest pains

    Hey guys,
Sorry for posting about chest pain again. I know I have in the past, but I could not find the post and have not yet figured out how to view my posts aside from subscribing to them (which I did not for that one.)
Anyways, I have been having minor chest pains once every day or two. They feel kind of like heart burn except higher up behind my sternum and usually go away when I burp. I have also been burping more frequently. I went to the doctor and it doesn't sound hugely urgent (although they did tell me to go to the emergency room if it gets worse but I figure that is just because it is chest pains) but they did tell me to buy pepsid or something and give me a sheet with information on it. On the sheet it said if you are experiencing chest pain you should reduce fat intake and eat less chocolate, and I have def been eating more of both since I went primal.
Is higher fat intake and chocolate a cause for these kinds of pain? They do not necessarily occur right after I eat (yesterday it happened after I had not eaten for 6-7 hours) but I have not paid attention to see how they correlate with my high fat meals.
    Any insight would be great!
    Thanks,
    -Zach

Try taking a tablespoon of Apple cider vinegar in some water when that happens. If it helps it go away, you might have low stomach acid. If it doesn't, I'm so sorry for the pain you're about to feel. Heh...
    Calm the f**k down.

I have noticed an increase in chest pains, too, since going Primal. They don't feel like heart burn or acid reflux at all!

I wish I could be more helpful, but chest pains are so broad and caused by too many things to know for sure what is going on with you.
My Dad had chest pains and went to the hospital and they told him it was indigestion and sent him home with medication. Shortly after he had a massive heart attack and went to a different hospital and they said they could see evidence he'd had a mild one prior, which was the "indigestion".
I had chest pains and went in and thought for sure I was having one but everything checked out and it was just anxiety/stress related. That was years ago...got rid of that job and the pains went away with it.
I haven't had more chest pains since Primal, but I have had more gut issues and gas. But then I'm going from being a strict vegetarian low fat diet to Primal and eating meat and fat so I expect some transition changes.
I hope all is okay with you and you figure out what is going on.

I've had chest pains since going primal as well. They're worse after I eat, but hang around regardless. Betaine HCl capsules helped some, but not completely (I think I may have an ulcer on top of low stomach acid, plus some anxiety issues). I'd definitely recommend giving them a try though.

The high fat / chocolate thing is CW bullshit. High fat is pretty much the ultimate dietary sin to CW doctors and nutritionists and they will always blame fat when you're having any sort of digestive problem. And the recommendation to lay off chocolate / tomatoes / acidic foods is based on the assumption that this kind of pain is always caused by too much acid, when in reality it's usually a case of too little acid and they just haven't gotten around to figuring that out yet.

I used to get gas pains up in my chest, below and to the right of the breast, closer to the sternum. Can't really recommend a "cure", but it could just be gas.

I have the same thing for years. I think it's hiatal hernia. They've been worse this month, but otherwise I feel great.

It hurts if I have to take a number 2, have to burp, ate a huge meal, etc. Definitely digestive related. For some reason, I think it's associated with all the fiber because they went away on VLC or with stomach acid. Lately I've really upped my veggie intake and they're stronger. The strongest they've ever been is when I ate a vegan diet, which is why I don't believe the chocolate / fat thing.

              Taking apple cider vinegar now.

For fuck's sakes guys. Have any of you considered that you have a copper deficiency? Grains have plenty of copper. Meat, dairy, the amount of vegetables that people eat around here, oils, these have no copper. Copper in paleo times came from organ meats like liver and gelatinous parts, which most of you don't eat. It WILL cause heart disease to get too little copper and too much iron. Get some supplements or supremely copper-rich foods to at least the RDA.

If you are getting plenty of copper and watching your iron intake, then I dunno. But I'm guessing that is it. In my early days of primal/paleo eating a bet I got like 30% of the RDA of copper and tons of iron. Not good. That is also likely why so many people have massive LDL despite good metabolic health and low systemic inflammation.

Should you take a copper supplement or just eat more copper rich foods? I'll give it a go because you're pimping it.

At least the copper supplements only cost one cent and are provided by the government.

I like copper supplements. Just take the RDA every day for a couple of weeks. Then try to get more copper foods in like gelatin, beef heart and some infrequent liver. Iron is also usually a problem so I would aim for no more than 75% of the RDA.

Stabby -- based on your recommendations, I am going to start a copper supplement tomorrow. Can't hurt.

Regarding chest pains, I forgot that I started taking apple cider vinegar on Sunday. I think that's causing it.
