  • Immune System.

For some reason, I get colds a LOT. My friends eat a WHOLE lot worse than me, and they barely ever get colds. I'm eating primally, taking supplements (fish oil, vitamin d, b complex, and multi, plus probiotics) but I still seem to get colds a lot during the wintertime.

Can you guys give me some extra tips for boosting my immune system? It sucks being sick

I'm browsed your journal and I'm just spitballing here but some days it doesn't seem like you eat very much. Like this day, one egg and blueberries would hold me over for about 10 minutes. This whole day is a big lunch.

    Diet:
    B: Egg, blueberries.
L: Kind of snacked on sweet potatoes and drank a lot of tea throughout the day ...
D: Leftovers -- Salmon, greek yogurt and strawberries, soup.

You also might try eliminating a few things for a month or so and adding them back in. Nuts perhaps, I'm suspicious that they screw me up if I eat too many. Dairy is another suspect. Maybe add a little more fruit? And maybe I looked a bad time period, but there seemed to be a lot of subway runs in there. You seem like you're getting plenty of sleep. I would try experimenting with more food and some elimination.

More veggies and fruit. While food is important getting rest is too. At least for me it is.

Next time you get a cold add some fresh lemon to hot water and a tsp of raw honey. Tasty and soothing.

How much vitamin D are you taking and have you actually had your levels checked? I took D for a long time but will still very deficient when I got tested. Then I got my levels to the upper end of normal and have not had a cold since - even when exposed to tons of sick family over the holidays.

Also - I think zinc deficiency is pretty easy to develop and leads to more colds. How is your zinc intake?

70% of your immune system starts in your gut. How is your digestion? Have you eliminated both gluten and dairy from your diet? When I removed those two components I stopped getting colds and haven't been sick in over a year. Prior to my change of diet I used to get sick all the time.

People say I am on a "crazy" diet. What is so crazy about eating veggies, fruits, seafood and organ meats? Just because I don't eat whole wheat and processed food doesn't make my diet "crazy". Maybe everyone else with a SAD are the "crazy" ones for putting that junk in their system.

Contrary to what the hype would have you believe, you cant 'boost your immune system'. It's a balancing act.
While a weak immune system may leave you susceptible to infection, an overactive one can lead to all kinds of hassle. Psoriasis, lupus and Crohn’s Disease are just a few examples.

Mega dosing vitamins in order to ward off illness is another myth. You need the correct amount - nothing more.

The only time I get sick is when I'm overly stressed or just run down, are you either of these?

Inflammation is an immune response and can compromise your resistance to disease, so you may need to examine your diet.

I would cast my vote at the Vitamin D. 2000 iu's seems like enough but since I started focussing on it for me and my family we haven't had any real colds. A couple of quick bouts but they were literally over in an hour. I'm a huge vitamin d fan. Get checked or go to 4000 iU or better yet get out in the sun or you can even tan safely indoors if you research it.
