I work in the world of higher ed. This came to my inbox this morning...

News: No Meat For You! - Inside Higher Ed

  • #2
This is why I ditched my meal plan as soon as I could. I never could trust the campus food...(although back then i was vegan....)
That being said, I never would have considered their choice to limit my options "an attack on liberty."

It's probably because I am what is generally refered to in layman's terms as a dick that stuff like this bothers the hell out of me. Meatless Mondays? Knock yourself out but I have a mother - she isn't Bowdoin College, or John's Hopkins, or the USDA, or Michelle Obama. I do not need a nanny to watch what I eat. If they want a conversation then great. I am all about talking. But do you think we are going to talk about not eating meat one day by forcing me not to eat meat one day...um...no.

The options included cheese ravioli, sesame and cashew rice noodles, spicy black bean burgers, African vegetable stew, cheese and bean quesadillas, and a stir fry of tofu, broccoli and cashews.
Let me guess, the stew had potatoes in it?

if you want to hand out literature and try to "educate" me, then go right ahead. i don't have to agree with you, so don't try to force me to eat your way.

I'm another higher ed worker. This sort of crap drives me up a wall, but is unfortunately all too common in my circles.

                From the article:
Dozens of students held an impromptu barbecue outside one facility in protest. Two other students sold McDonald’s cheeseburgers while simultaneously raising funds for a local humane society. Another group of students ate buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken inside the dining hall.

Does Meatless Mondays mean I get eggs for breakfast, Eggsalad for lunch and a fritatta for dinner? Hopefully cooked in A vat of bacon fat!

I'm a devote liberal / animal lover so I was a little more than disgusted at the narrow mindedness of these students. This isn't a liberal vs. conservative issue or a animal lover vs. animal hater issue, this is a matter of nutrition and evolution. The need for protein wasn't mentioned at all.

My favorite part of the article is the phrase "counter-culinary protest." Love it.

Exactly! The whole liberal=vegetarian conservative=carnivore thing is just cognitive distortion. So many of these arguments associate meat with hedonism and self-indulgence, ignoring that it is an essential component of our evolutionarily appropriate diet.

For sure. I know a lot of leftists who are carnivores, particularly in the local food movement where I live. A lot of us happily eat free-range, ethical, locally raised meat as part of our environmental activism and commitment to supporting local producers. My part of the world was clear-cut for agriculture by homesteaders, and the degradation of our soil as a result of the loss of the boreal forests is evident both in the history of the 1930s dustbowls and our current problems with shrinking aquifers and ongoing topsoil erosion.

People need to stop thinking in terms of left and right wings, the political spectrum should be viewed as statist versus anarchist. A statist would say you must eat like I demand, an anarchist will say you can eat whatever you want.

The term liberal used to mean someone who believes in small government. Now you have to use the term classical liberal in order to describe such a person. In much the same way you have conservatives and neo-cons. The statists will always try to take over a term that means small government. Even the term whig used to be associated with small government people in the UK, the statists like Lincoln and Henry Clay took over that term in order to gain support for their statist positions.

They did address the need for protein: “It frustrated me that students weren’t willing to try it,” said Shaw. “Because you missed the table -- whether you were supportive or not -- and missed the opportunity to try the protein-filled vegetarian options that were offered, and we missed out on a conversation. It was certainly their choice though.”

All those protein laden vegies! They probably meant the beans - I guesss their nutritionist told them they were vegies.

Edited to say oops I misread - they said vegetarian options not vegetables. Bring on the soy!
