  • Had an 8 pounder

Had a five day visit with my sister and brother wherein we enjoyed a great deal of good wine and food. Despite all the tempations, I would guess I was still around 70% compliant on food (excluding the wine of course...).

I gained 8 pounds in five days! (I went from 207 to 215 pounds)

Essentially erased my positive results of the first month-and-a-half on primal, although after about 2 weeks back on primal, I am nearly back to where I was.

I thought I would share because I couldn't believe this was possible. And, was curious if this was telling me anything other than I am very efficient at stoking the fat stores when eating carbs.

After 2 weeks you are back to where you were before the 5 day binge? Or back where you first started?

Roughly back to prior to the binge. About 208 and the belly is back down most of the way.

Seemed like a freakish occurrence - it was shocking.

probably most, if not all, of the weight you gained was water retention and stored food, which is a result of eating a lot of carbs. regardless, good job getting back on track.

plus, 8 pounds in five days sounds like a fun visit. giving in and having a good time with family is probably one of the most primal things you can do

@ Primal Rob- I like your style!

People forget that even Grok faced temptations of sorts- perhaps those hallucinogenic mushrooms had him bouncing around on week-long trips from time to time. Giving in to food temptations, provided it is infrequently, just shows you how far you've come. The few times I've given in to dominating the pastry trays, getting back into my primal foods has felt PHENOMENAL!

I don't know if I would feel that euphoria if I simply stayed true, 100% on track all the time. Sometimes the crazy, open-minded people have more fun in life And every time I hit the primal lifestyle after a weekend off, I am more Grok-like than ever!

i just did a ski weekend, gained 9lbs and it'll all be gone by the end of the week.
I didn't like the rules you gave me, so I made some of my own.

You had an acute systemic reaction in the form of inflammation (water retention) as opposed to the chronic systemic condition you suffered prior to adopting primal. Now do you believe what all the crap does to your system? It's amazing, isn't it?

Absolutely it is amazing. Stunning really. I ate OK except for about 4 slices of french bread (the mussel broth was too darn good) and a desert. Oh, and the bottle of wine a night. But, heck, no one is perfect.

But, my bodies reaction to all that was amazing. Bloated up like a tick. However, eating primal again and basically back to pre-bash normal after 2 weeks.

                          Learned a bit too.

galanga - just want wanted you to know that you are not alone in your rapid weight gain.

This happens to me every time I go to visit my parents, whether its for the weekend or for an entire week. I have yet to convince them that my not eating grains really means no grains and you can't bake chocolate chip cookies or cakes or bread or pizza or pasta without sugar and just expect me to eat them. But I have one of those moms that hinges her self-worth on making sure her family is stuffed to the gills with delicious foods and desserts (couldn't be why she had 3 obese children... ). So, after 2 years of arguing with her about it, I decided to just enjoy myself and let her enjoy herself while I'm there. She's happy, I get to request all of my favorite foods, and usually 5-7 pounds later, I head home and lose it all in less than a week and go about my happy primal ways.

I guess that's the only good thing about them living 7 hours away - I'll have to rethink my strategy if they ever move closer!!

When I read you "Had an 8 pounder" I thought you were going to say something totally amazing. Then when you started talking about “wherein we enjoyed a great deal of good wine and food” I still thought it was going to be unbelievable. Then you made it about weight gain… still an informative post.
