  • Cheese....

    OK...here's a question for all of you Grok/Grokettes...

    Cheese= Dairy (and thus bad). Avoid eating.

    or

    Cheese= OK. Eat minimally and WITH SELF CONTROL.


    For leaning out and reducing total bodyfat concentration. Which is it? I have heard conflicting arguments for both cases. And I am trying to lean out but love cheese.....

    Let's hear it....

      It depends on the person - some people do very well eating dairy (although probably raw/high quality dairy, not jugs of 2%), but other people just react badly to it. It can stall fat-loss for some people because they eat too much of it, but another reason I've heard is that it stalls fat-loss because it's a growth-encouraging food - human-milk is extremely nourishing for babies and helps them grow fast, so I assume the same would be true for cow-milk.

      As for myself, I'll have a bit if I really feel like it, but it's not a huge component of my diet. Since I'm not actively trying to lose bodyfat (just taking things slow and trying to get stronger), but I just don't feel like it's something I should eat a lot of, so I try to base my diet around meat, eggs and vegetables and only do dairy when I feel like eating something that is completed by dairy - i.e. taco-seasoned ground beef with a bit of jalapeno cheese and sour cream.

        If you are trying actively to lose body fat do you think it would be better just to skip the dairy? I find that on days that I do have dairy, I don't lose any weight even if everything else in my diet is exactly the same.

          Yes, you described me and my problem to a T, Enamel. I LOVE cheese. Always have since being a young child ( a LONG, LONG time ago!). And I think before Paleo....it was too much of a staple in my diet. I would put it on everything. It definitely promoted my growth (up to 248!!!). I think it "likes" me as much as I like it. Or it likes a bigger me...

          Anyway, since going Paleo I have curtailed my eating of cheese. I still have some but it is only occasional and in LIMITED quantity. And definitely not everyday. Im 16lbs down now so this seems to be working for me so far...

            I love cheese! Love it! Did I mention I love cheese?! However, I am trying to lose some pounds so I've now changed my relationship to cheese so that I treat it more as a condiment and not a main course! I put it on things and in things (lightly), and one of my favorite "sensible indulgences" is apple slices with a sharp, white cheddar. Yum!

            So - yes I still eat cheese, just in moderation. DH is primal too, but not needing to lose weight and cheese is one of his favorite snacks. He eats a lot of it, and he's fine with it -- but again, he's not trying to lose weight.

              It still has calories (although I know there's a ton of debate over whether they matter or not) and I think it'd still be insulinogenic, and retain whatever other qualities make it such a good food for growth. If you're not talking about the fat-loss issues, then yes, natural cheese is worlds better than nasty processed cheese. I'd love to try real cheese from some artisan's cheese cellar or whatever, but so far the best I've had has been raw cheddar from the store and various cheeses I had in france, although I don't know what they were called.

                  i started doing a 30 day challenge for myself with no dairy or nuts...still haven't had the nuts. i love cheese too, and i did okay without it. cheese doesn't have a bad effect on me because it's dairy, but more because it's extra food. it's definitely one of those enjoy in moderation foods...but it really makes a meal come together sometimes.
                  you might want to try going 30 days no dairy, then lightly re-introduce it to see if it affects you at all. if nothing else, it could be beneficial...i noticed a decrease in body fat--likely from the reduced calorie and carb intake--for the couple of weeks i survived without cheese and butter. that was just a mirror test, but still...

                    I saw a documentary about how they fatten up young girls for marriage in Mauritania by forcing them to eat (horrible!) , and the mothers were making the young girls drink huge quantities of milk. FWIW.

                      I've heard about that - it's terrible and reminds me of how they force-feed geese/ducks for foie gras.

                            I think, personally, I am one of those unfortunate souls who has to limit cheese in their diet to lose bodyfat. And that includes all kinds. It has a growth promoting/enlarging effect and it is probably insulinogenic (for me). As I said, previously, I used to eat it on everything. Since going Paleo I have made use of it like a condiment and have seen a reduction in my bodyfat. So, I may take your advice PrimalRob and try getting rid of it for a month to see how my body does overall. I would expect it can only help me with my quest for fat loss....

                              I have cream in my coffee and enjoy cheese a few times a week. My wife cannot tolerate bovine dairy (other than butter) but does fine with raw goat products.

                              Smoked raw goat cheddar is the best.
