  • When did you know for sure you were a fat burner and no longer a sugar/carb burner?

I'm at the end of week 3, and I'm losing bodyfat but not so much pounds it seems, which is fine cause that's my overall goal... lower bodyfat. But I'm just curious, does this mean I'm a fat burner now because my bodyfat is lowering without the actual weight? How can you tell when you've made the switch completely?

I have more energy most days than pre-Primal already. I still have some down days, but it's usually attributed to not enough sleep some nights and/or over-working myself in my workouts, which I'm trying to modify according to the plan.

I'm struggling a bit with the "Primal treats" like dark chocolate and Primal cookies, but I don't see where it has been detrimental to me thus far as I'm still losing bodyfat. It's just really hard to tell if I still need to cut way back on those things to make sure I go "fat burner." Is there a definite sign? Thanks!

Ketosis stix would be the only definative sign that I could think of, if you need something other than your shrinking waistline to tell you

Yeah I've still got pudge around the waist that I want to see gone. I have noticed my arms are skinnier though. I can't really tell in my face but looking at it every day probably makes it difficult to see the changes.

I may have to check into those ketosis stix....but I don't know if those would even show for me because I'm doing between 50-100g of carbs a day...not under 50.

Energy levels. I went from kind of 'blah' all the time to 'hell yeah!'

A good example: for my fiance, on a low calorie / low fat diet, going to the gym is a chore. She comes home at the end of the day tired and says "but i have to go to the gym." I get home at the end of the day and say "I have to go to the gym and do something physical!!! I've been at work all day! I need to burn off this energy!" The gym isn't a chore, it's my fun time.

Also, the biggest, easiest way for me to tell: intermittent fasting. When I was on a low fat, vegetarian diet, I had to eat every 3 or 4 hours or I would start to get cranky and even lightheaded. Now I can go 24 hours without eating anything. It's crazy. My fiance was worried that I was pre-diabetic because I HAD to eat or else I just became irrational. That's not the case anymore.

        Not sure if that helps.

I'm in and out of ketosis all the time and I eat within the same range as you. Test first thing in the morning though as you will move out of ketosis once you have your breakfast carbs.

Yeah cavemanj, I'm not at the IF point yet unfortunately. I figured that might play a role. I get extremely weak anytime I try to fast for more than 12 hours, so I probably am not completely fat burner yet.

            NourishedEm, I'll do that! Thanks!

Interesting. I feel like my forearms and calves were the first as well.

I've been on the primal diet for a month now and I was having the same question. It was just answered this week ( I believe haha). I've been on a 30 hour fast and I'm just now starting to get a little hungry. It was really weird because I haven't been hungry at all yet my energy levels are still very high! You'll know soon enough

I have ketostix and test once a week. I'm always at the very lower end. Next week will be a month I've been on PB. I try to limit my carbs to 50 a day or less. I haven't seen a difference yet (except of what I'm capable of at the gym, whoo-doggy!), but hubby says I'm looking leaner. I think I'm losing fat from my neck. I see more and more of my collarbones every day. Really, body, can't we move on to other places? My neck looked great before PB. Let's work on other areas!

I get cold hands and cold feet. As soon as that starts, I know I'm a fat burner.

The body's tissues use fatty acids preferentially when insulin is low or when blood fatty acid concentration is high in comparison to glucose (Randle cycle), so that's most of the time for most of us. Ketosis can be thought of as an advanced state of fat burning -- the liver breaks fatty acids into ketone bodies so that these can cross the blood-brain barrier and be used by the brain for energy (most fatty acids are too large to cross).

Basically, if your intake of carbs is less than the body's capability to store glycogen (about 300g) you'll be oxidizing fatty acids much of the time, even if you're not testing positive for ketones.

aHA! I noticed that right about the same time that I consistently began to forget to eat.

Pretty sure that's a good sign as well-when you get to lunch time and realize that it's not a big deal if you decide to delay lunch for an hour while finishing a report.

i think the best way to know is how your clothes fit. Me personally? My face was the first to lose the fat, my waist and core section is getting super lean and i know this might sound weird but i truly believe that i can "feel" the ketosis! I have so much energy that it is hard to sit still and i can go forever without feeling hungry. My body actually has this buzzing sensation and i love it, lol!! I am so glad that I found the Primal way of life!!

Oh yeah, the bad breath, =P
