  • Nutritional Yeast from a paleo/primal perspective

    Greetings. Does anyone use this? Does it makes sense to consume it
    from a paleo/primal perspective? Doesn't it contain some type of MSG
    naturally?

    I have now read this twice in two different books. I asked at the store where I buy mine and they had no clue; saying they'd asked the mfg'r and they didnt know how it was made, either...

    I asked Bee Wilder who was quite confident it was not manufactured in such as a way as to contain MSG. Her response to me is on her YahooGroup and I'm online in a 'restricted' area and cannot access YahooGroups right now so replying here, will be a reminder to look it up when this weekend is over...

    According to "Eat Fat, Lose Fat", they state that "nutritional yeast is an excellent natural source of B complex vitamins (except B12) plus a variety of minerals, particularly chromium." pg 103

      i like to use it in place of cheese at times when i am eating too much dairy. it is so tasty. didn't know about the msg thing, though. i'll have to look into this.

              you see, the glutamic acid content in nutritional yeast is VERY HIGH, comparable to the other aminos in it. as far as MSG, it is ithe same MSG you get from other primal food you eat, aka, naturally occuring as a byproduct of what grows on sugar beet molasses which is where it comes from unless you get some crappy brand that is brewers yeast in disguise and it comes from wheat byproducts making beer. it is NOT the same MSG processed and fond in seasoning, asian food etc. careful on how much nutritional yeast you use in conjunction with primal because there is a LOAD of Naicin(correct me if im wrong i think its naicin) in it

                    Dumb question, is this the kind of yeast I might add to a bread recipe? I was making some coconut flour bread recipes and was considering adding it. Bad idea?

                      I think they're talking about brewers yeast (which is NOT delicious)

                        Can you expand on the MSG bit? My understanding is that glutamate itself is excitatory, and that the effects we see from MSG are due to the high glutamate content, not because it's complexed with sodium.

                        abexman, you want baker's yeast, which comes in a packet or jar that says "active dry yeast", or "instant yeast", or "quick-rising yeast" or something of the sort. Looks like tiny brown pellets, while nutritional yeast is bright yellow, often in flakes or powdered.

                          Nutritional Yeast aka Engevita yeast has a salty, almost cheesy flavor (very delicious on creamy soup)
                          IIRC they're similar nutritionally to the brewers stuff, but its a beer byproduct that's been debittered, might explain the off taste, but I haven't tried it
