  • Adjusting physically to coconut oil

    I LOVE coconut oil and have been eating it daily since I discovered PB, but I was wondering if you folks who have been enjoying it for a long time could share how long it took your body to adjust to it. I've read several threads about how ingesting too much has a laxative effect but that you can "build up" a tolerance to it. I currently have two tablespoons a day (at breakfast) but think that's still too much for by body. How long did it take y'all to be able to tolerate that much or more? Or should I just cut back completely?

    I used to eat coconut oil straight out of the jar, but it's so satiating that I literally gag at the thought of doing that again. Saying that, I use at least a spoonful or two or coconut oil with every meal. I noticed some laxative effects when I used to eat it on it's own, but I can safely say that my body adjusted well within a week.

    In the long-term, I've had no problems. I can't live without my Coconoil!

      I had no problem with just eating a Tbsp of coconut oil but did have some digestive effects with the coconut milk in the beginning but I had consumed 3/4 cup which was the equivalent of eating 3 Tbsp of coconut oil at once. The guar gum may have played a role too.

        I'm 4 weeks in to PB, and haven't noticed any problems eating coconut oil straight up. It's yummo! If anything, I'm more regular now than I was before.

          Suggest 1/2 teaspoonful and increasing by the same every week.

            So does that mean tummy issues with coconut products doesn't necessarily mean an intolerence then?

              I would say it doesn't necessarily mean intolerance. It could just be too much or too much too fast.

                I just started using coconut oil (nutiva) myself and thankfully got some advice beforehand to start small and build up. Right now I am using three teaspoons per day and want to get up to three tablespoons. My GI tract doesn't seem bothered by it at all, but oh man do I get kinda hot after eating it. Not hot as in 'I'm all that' hot. LOL. I get kinda flushed and warm for a half hour or so.

                  I was fine within a day. I take a couple of tablespoons thru out with no problems now.

                  My sister on the other hand is a crazy story. She recently (for the first time ever) took a teaspoon in the morning. TMI, but she started vomiting and diarrheaing for 2 days and it's only started to taper off. I knew about the purging from the intestinal tracts, yet I didn't really come across comments about vomiting till I googled "coconut oil and vomit." Apparently it's not an uncommon experience, but WOAH.

                  She's had coconut oil when cooked in vegetables and there wasn't anything amiss with that. I think this was just plain overload for her.

                    Thanks, that's helpful info. I have many intolerances so thought that was what was going on when I felt iffy after eating lots of coconut milk. Good to know that may not be the case.

                      Oh man. When I discovered coconut oil, I ate 1-2 T with veggies for a few days in a row and wound up in so much pain and 'distress' that I went to get an ultrasound. (I was fine, but I has been convinced that one of my internal organs was on its way out.) I haven't touched it since, but there are so many good recipes I'm missing! Those of you who advocate the measured approach, did you have really strong reactions at first?

                          Too much coconut used to give me a stomach ache. Seems to have gotten better.

                            Coconut oil is a strong antifungal so if you have yeast overgrowth like most SADers it can make you pretty sick if you're not used to it. Start small and work your way up.

                              What is your main purpose for eating coconut oil in addition to your meals? Is it just to get your fat intake up and other health benefits of coconut oil? I just recently started putting it in my coffee and I cook with it, but just wondering why so much? Does it help with weight loss, cravings, hunger? Just interested...
