  • Am I still fasting if...

...I have a cup of coffee w/ a couple of tablespoons of coconut milk? I can't get through my morning without a cup of coffee, and I've recently switched from cream to coconut milk. Just wondering if I'm still getting the benefit of IF if I've consumed a few calories in the form of the coconut milk during my morning?

Try guzzling 30 oz of water when you first get up. It should have a similar effect as a cup of joe (it does for me). Personally I think if you derive any sort of nutrition/calories from something, you're not fasting.

You should be OK with a little cream, but a couple TBS of coco milk are probably taking you out of the fast.

Here's what Martin over Leangains says about it.
"* No calories are to be ingested during the fasted phase, though coffee, calorie free sweeteners, diet soda and sugar free gum are ok (even though they might contain trace amount of calories). A tiny splash of milk in your coffee won’t affect anything either (˝-1 teaspoon of milk per cup at the most - use sparingly and sensibly if you drink a lot of coffee). Neither will sugar free gum in moderation (~20 g)."

        Technically, no.

But you'll still get most of the benefits of a true fast.

Why not just drink your coffee black?

I used to need milk in my coffee and found black coffee to be beyond disgusting. I started drinking black coffee a while ago, while IFing in a matter of fact, and I've gotten used to it now and can't have it any other way.

You know what they say.. once you go black, you never go back

I do black first thing in the morning. Then I have a second cup late morning with a little cream. I think it's ok as long as it's just a tablespoon or two.
