  • Fat Burning Supplement

    It's driving me crazy. Someone on the boards yesterday mentioned a supplement one could take to help teach the body how to burn its fat for energy more efficiently/quickly. It was L-creatinine or something. Help?

          N Acetyl Carnitine is good for memory and for weight loss. CLA has reported help in fat loss but there is very little science behind that supplement.

          I like N Acetyl Carnitine, N acetyl Cysteine and Milk thistle or feverfew and high omega three supplementation based upon the Cardiac CRP numbers. Obesity is an inflammatory condition cause by leptin resistance. Anything that lowers inflammation especially at the liver level.........which all these do is a good deal.

            MWF: 1 hour run/walk, 1.5 hours in the gym - upper/lower and core
            Sat/Sun=Yard/house work, chasing kids, playing
            Family walk every night instead of everyone vegging in front of the TV
            Personal trainer to build muscle mass & to help meet goals

                expand on what? Adiposity is a primary cause of inflammation. That is scientific fact. The fatter you are the higher your cardiac CRP. The more fat that gets stored in your liver to cause non alcoholic fatty liver. The fat inflammation then causes disruption in the metabolic cycle and sepcifically drive IL 6 TNF alpha and NF kappa beta. These all mediate human disease. All disease state have these chemicals in high concentration where they should not be to cause metabolic cell disturbance. The pathway to getting to these highly inflammatory chemicals is multiple but the end point is the same............For example being fat and smoking get you to the same end points. High levels of inflammation and chemical mediators and disease states depending upon where the damage is focused.

                To give a simple analogy think of this.......IF youre in NYC with your wife and I tell you you both need to get to LA........your wife gets on a plane and gets there in 4 hours (fast like a smoker) and you go via the car and you get there 5 days later. (slow like a fat person) The bottom line is you both are in LA.........or disease land at the end. Both smokers and the obese wind up sucumbing to diseases caused by highly inflammed states. COPD, lung Cancer for smokers and cardiac disease, breast CA, and prostate CA among others for the obese.

                Their are millions of references for this phenomena if you google it. If you want a rather pedestrian explanantion of the forrest thru the trees view of this science...........read Mastering Leptin by Byron Richards. His Ideas on diet are bad but how leptin resistance leads to insulin resistance then ultimately adrenal resistance and serious disease thru hormonal disruption and cellular signalling deficits is pretty basic science these days. What is not basic science is how to avoid it with the correct mix of whole foods. Gary Taubes is making many doctors re examine the published research and flaws in it.........and also uncover older studies that clearly support many paleo principles. But you cant be truly paleo and believe any part of the lipid hypothesis. I also advocate reading both of Taubes books but GCBC is not easy reading for the lay public. His new book however is far easy on the eyes.

                  There is no better disease to study than Type 2 Diabetes to understand how a chronic highly inflammed state wrecks havoc on multiple organ systems. If you want to be diabetic just eat like your doc tells you or the American heart assoc tells you or most cardiologist or dieticians or nutrionists. Any diet high in refined carbs whole grains and PUFA's will kill you as fast as a lead bullet through your mouth into your brainstem.


                  I think when your faced with what us docs are in clinic everyday you have to be brain dead not to question the current dogma.

                    I like Byron Richards as well.

                    L-acetyl-carnitine is supposed to help get energy into cells to be used. He also mentions many others, such as NAC, pantethine (better version of pantothenic acid), ubiquinol, calcium AEP, benfotiamine, methyl B12, it just goes on and on. I take a lot of such things. Biotin in large doses is supposed to moderate morning glucose levels. CLA is present in butter from grassfed dairy cows, thank heavens.

                    Keep vitamin D levels really good -- by improving calcium levels, it moderates "agouti", something which signals your appetite to increase.

                    I believe (if memory serves) that NAC is N-Acetyl-Cysteine, not N-Acetyl-Carnitine. (It's L-Acetyl-Carnitine, different stuff.) "Carnosine" can also help out. Different stuff again. I believe that NAC works because it's a precursor for glutathione, a really good anti-oxidant which is hard to absorb by mouth. I tried a sublingual version of glutathione, it seems like very nasty stuff with a metallic flavor from some molybdenum in it, and too much citric acid, which might well etch one's teeth. I think I prefer taking the NAC, on an empty stomach.

                    It takes some effort to read through "Mastering Leptin", and it's the kind of book which it is good to go back to when it all starts to blur in one's memory. But I'm convinced that a lot can be done to kick-start enough metabolism to overcome metabolic syndrome. I feel that once the process is rolling, and enough energy is freed up to fuel exercise instead of destroying muscle when one attempts it, some of these supplements can be reduced or discontinued. In the meantime, I'm glad they are there.

                    A critical part of everything is to master fructose intake. Keep it low. That really should be Rule One.

                      It's so refreshing to find an enlightened doc! I find it tricky to navigate the medical field as an enlightened patient, it must be absolute quicksand for you! ( Are you a hand surgeon?)

                        Thanks DigitalSurgeon & Piano-Doctor-Lady, I appreciate your insight. I truly beleive that this is the way that we are all meant to eat, but I seem to be stuck, where I should be shedding weight and loosing inches given the way I'm eating and excercising. I feel like there is something wrong with how my body deals with energy. I'm off to do some research! It's a huge puzzle.

                          But you should walk daily 2 times.One time in the morning and one is in the evening then you loss your weight definitely.Walk is must for it.
