  • Natural sugar-free sweeteners?

    What do y'all think of natural sweeteners that don't contain sugar (things like xylitol, stevia, crystalline fructose (found in Vitamin Water Zero, which claims to have less than 1g sugar in it), or erythritol)?

    Yay or nay?

    After a short adjustment period, I think the Vitamin Water Zero tastes even better than the regular fructose-containing Vitamin Water variety. But I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing and not inadvertently doing something stupid

    lots of info on stevia and other sweeteners on here already, a quick search will give you loads of fun.

    water doesn't need vitamins, or sugar for that mater. just drink regular water.

      Eat clean for one month and you won't need to sweeten anything. Natural foods will taste great, and fruit will be candy.

        I agree that abstaining from sugar especially during the first month really diminishes your taste for it. Erythritol and xylitol don't agree with me (my gut is quite sensitive). I really only think Stevia is the least destructive sweetener out there. This doesn't mean you should eat it at every meal though.

          +1 on all of the above. I will use maple syrup + stevia to sweeten some things for my son (coconut flour cake for a b-day party, etc) but feel better if I just totally abstain. I will use stevia though w/out the negative effects I've had from other real or artificial sweeteners....

            I love xylitol.

            Rarely use it, but imo it's the best of the bunch.

              Be careful with xylitol if you have pets (it can be fatal to them); just make sure you have it stored in a safe place. I like SweetLeaf (stevia) - its the best tasting stevia product that I've tried.

                when I was first diagnosed with Diabetes I switched to splenda , I have since cut that out just because it is manmade. I use stevia now . I hope to eventually drop that too, been weaning myself off it . being from the south it is hard to give up my sweet tea !!! I think that has been my hardest part of adapting to primal . hopefully I wont be even using stevia much longer.

                  I like the Sweet Leaf stevia liquid. Also erythritol is pretty good, but less sweet, so you have to use more.

                  It's surprising the vitamin water zero has crystalline fructose in it. I don't think that's zero calories, so I don't see how it could have much of it at all. Maybe I'm wrong, though. I, personally, would stay away from anything with added fructose.

                    Speaking of fructose, so glad to know the American Dietetic Association is looking out for us and recommending this brilliant low glycemic sweetener.

                      I like Xylitol too and Stevia. But I don't think it should be a daily use. Maybe once per week in a primal cake recipe. Also I think it should be okay to use honey occassionally.
                      Water should be just water no sweeteners etc.

                      I used to have a bit of stevia in my black coffee every morning and thought it was getting a bit ridiculous. I didn't really need it so have switched to having none in my black coffee.
