No wonder the people on this page are terrified of low carb diets!!! I need to read it more indepth and counterpoint a bunch of this, but boy this makes me lose any credibility of this registered dietitian!!!

Nutmeg, LOL... yeah, that's why I quit reading anything on Spark, very CW! Are you still driving yourself nuts over there?

I got totally spoken to by one of the "coaches" once for commenting that regular dairy products have high levels of antibiotics in them and that it wasn't the best method for getting in Calcium and D. She told me it wasn't true but then provided no research or backup on it. LOL. I just stopped going to anything but the thyroid group (which I still LUV cuz there's some smart peeps on there!)

Holy shit, a sample menu, has this EVER WORKED FOR ANYBODY EVER EVER EVER?? never did for me, and I REALLY REALLY TRIED:

      # ruits: 2-4 servings daily
      # Vegetables: 3-5 servings daily
      # Whole grain breads, muffins, bagels, rolls, pasta, noodles, crackers, cereal, and brown rice: 6-11 servings daily
      # Legumes, beans and peas: 1-2 servings daily
      # Low-fat and non-fat dairy products: 3 servings daily

      Holy shit.

Also, this claim: "In fact, the human brain depends exclusively on carbohydrates for its energy." How do you explain a human infant whose diet is almost entirely devoid of carbs and is well over 70% fat (breast milk) for months and months? Wouldn't we die or not develop our brains if this claim were true?

Yeah Iniquity... this is the CW crap they spew over there. I stopped doing anything except using it for tracking food (the food tracking system is pretty well organized and can track LOTS of nutrients so I like it) and visiting the one forum.

There is a paleo group too... but yeah, I feel bad for the normal peeps who get sucked into doing this crap and failing miserably.

          You know what's creepy?

It just occurred to me that they took the time to carefully outline just what type of grains to eat (bread, pasta, noodles, crackers, etc) but didn't do so for the other recommendations. Sure, most folks don't need to be told what's a fruit and what's a vegetable, but to the typical carb-addict that listing of whole grains is enough to make their mouths water and head to the nearest pizza joint, bagel shop, etc.

The conspiracy theorist in me smells a backing of sorts... or maybe the author just really likes his/her grains.

Edit: A girl-friend of mine gave paleo a half-assed shot before telling me she missed grains too much and jumped off the wagon. I saw she posted on facebook a meal she had at Panera, it was a bowl of mac and cheese and a loaf of bread. The caption read "heaven". I love her dearly, and she really doesn't need to lose weight, but she's SO stuck in CW that it hurts. Won't lift a weight (but will hit the treadmill every day, her own admittance) doesn't care to stop eating grains or even cut back a bit and will always ask me "what's your take on ____ ?" which is almost always a refined carb or a source of dairy. I told her for the sake of our friendship I just can't try to help her anymore unless she's serious about it. I told her "you know what to do, you know how I live (I'm a proud food porn guy, I take pics of my meals and post them on facebook about once every week or every other week) you know how I train, you are probably tired of the links I put up... but why do you think I bother? why am I in the best shape of my life? why do I love everything i eat and how it makes me feel? have you ever seen me give a shit about anything as much as this, ever?"

Its hard getting thru to the people you care for the most, and being met with so much resistance.

typical...they don't allow any feedback. Open up comments if you stand by what you are saying.

I don't tend to do much reading on CW sites. And anything written by someone with RD after their name is immediately suspect.

The thing that really gets me is how they set up a low-carb straw man, suggesting that it is a high protein diet that excludes vegetables and fruits, and then citing unproven assumptions as if they are fact:
The risk of heart disease is greatly increased on a low-carb diet that is high in protein, cholesterol, fat, and saturated fat. A temporary reduction in cholesterol levels may be experienced, but this is common with any weight loss.
Care to back that up with a study?

Right and despite the fact that they DO list starches as a carb source, they write as if low carb eaters never touch those, and they certainly paint the picture that whole grains are THE source for carbs that if you go without you will eventually die.

Yeah, I looked for comments, too. Wierd, though, because a lot of their articles they do ARE open to comments and usually a few peeps will speak up about the inaccuracies. Not sure if this particular section is comment-free, or they got tired of people calling them on their... stuff.

Minxa, I really do still go and post on teh Diet and Nutrition board. Why? Because at least once a week I have someone message me and say, 'thank you' for posting the stuff I do. I am willing to take a few for the team if I help someone in the process. I don't read all the messages, just the ones I might be able to provide positive insight to. I let the stupid comments roll off my back. Plus, it fills my need for drama without upsetting people I like and respect on boarsd like this

I go to the Paleo Group, the Thyroid Group and the Living Low Carb group on a regular basis. Those peeps are cool, I like them

I will be tearing this article apart on my SP blog though, so look for it in the next few days Continue to provide counterpoints, the more ammo I have the better

OK, I totally see your point. I know I've gotten some peeps ask me questions after I ditched grains, too, so in the spirit of presenting another point of view I got ya!

I'll totally check out the blog post...

I thought it would be very boring but that's also when I thought I had to boil or steam everything. Eat it plain and just shut up about it. Glad to know I was way off!

I find this way of eating much more palatible for sure. Even though I tend to eat the same thing for breakfast most days. Hey, who can go wrong with scrambled eggs and some form of meat? Maybe some veggies if i still feel hingry.

Interestingly, I eat MORE fruits and veggies now than I did when I as on teh CW way of eating. I easily eat 2 servings of fruits, mostly berries. I also eat at least 3 servings of veggie most days, sometimes in one meal!
