  • The weird things almond butter does.

I am weak in the face of almond butter. More often than not it's a spoonful of almond butter that sets me off on a rampage around the house eating everything in sight. If there's a jar in my fridge it won't last more than a day or two, tops.

Anyone else run into problems with it? I'm trying to figure out what about nut butter sets me off.

I'm the same. It's easy to eat but bland enough in taste that somehow one mouthful doesn't feel like enough. Also it does have a great mouthfeel to it (at least I think so). Strangely, the same doesn't happen to me with animal fats - I mean, I crave them but once I've eaten them I get a 'proper' feeling of fullness. I could eat jars and jars of nut butter and not fill up but animal fats really seem to 'plug the hole'.

I have absolutely no control with almond butter. It doesn't cause me to overeat other things, but I can consume a jar in one day to the exclusion of all other foods! That doesn't happen to me with anything else.

I try to have almond butter only on weekends--and I try to make the jar last 2 days. Right now, I'm not buying it at all in an effort to gain some control.

I don't know what it is--except that it's my only 'indulgence,' so perhaps that's what makes it so alluring when it's in the house.

I had to give up nuts completely. I don't know what it is about them, but I just can't control myself. I'll treat myself to a bag of nuts or a jar of nut butter once every month or two, but for the most part, they just need to stay the hell away from me. I've had two binges since going primal, and both of them began and ended with nearly half a jar of peanut butter (my non-primal family keeps it around). It was the cheap, nasty kind too, with hydrogenated oils and sugar. I knew this while I was eating it but I just couldn't stop myself once I started.

        Shit's downright evil.

Yep, been there, done that, may have to give up nuts for good. I am pretty sure that nuts are the nasty culprit that majorly derailed some of my previous efforts to stick to primal, they just sent me off on huge eating binges that ended with me eating whatever I could get my grubby little hands on. Not this time my backstabbing friend.
My whole life, I've felt like an animal......but I've ignored my instincts. I ignored what I really am. That will never happen again.

I have a full jar of almond butter. I bought it a long while back but never dug into it. I'm not really a fan of nuts, gladly because they seem to cause a lot of people to over indulge.
I used to seriously post here, now I prefer to troll.

I understand the lack of control. I had to stop eating nuts and give away my almond butter :-(

agree with the rest. Can't eat it. Whole jar in one setting. Had to quit.

I also had problems with these tahini balls - where you mix tahini, dried fruit, dates, crushed almonds and honey, and roll the gooey mess into little balls covered in dessicated coconut. On second thought, you could do that with almond butter. NO, don't. they are addictive. marginally PB, but addictive.

Oh I can't do snacks or any 'grey areas'.

What's even more delicious.. (and expensive) - Cashew Butter.

But it's very rich .. so after I've had a bit of it, I'm usually good for 2-3 weeks.

Me, me, and me. Could have written these posts myself. I have no control around jars of almond butter. It makes me feel better to know that I am not the only one. For a long time I really thought I was so weird. My binges since starting PB have also been centered around jars of almond butter. Usually half a jar in a sitting. Oh it's just so good.

But, I think what poster, dfast, said might be something to look at. It's true that I never feel satisfied with a serving of almond butter (or even whole almonds for that matter). I've had a little luck these past few mornings using coconut oil to make my eggs and then sprinkling unsweetened coconut on my half apple. The only problem I am encountering is my body can't tolerate too much coconut. I'm hoping it will adapt because I think I can get used to eating it frequently.

Regarding animal fats, this is where I'm running into a problem. I don't eat red meat or pork. This started when I was young. I just never liked it. Now I have this thing about thinking cows are so cute (I know, I know...). However, I did try some pork the other day in the form of salami. I'm sure it wasn't primal, but I figured that would be the best place to start since that was something I liked when I was little. Anyway, tolerated it okay except for a full feeling in my belly--which is exactly what dfast is saying. Animal fat.

So dfast, can you tell us where your animal fat is coming from and how much of it you are eating a day? I think I need to re-look at things. I cannot keep consuming almond butter/almonds the way I have been. I have gained weight in the last almost month of PB. Completely my own doing and I completely accept full responsibility for it. However, I need to rein it in now. I had to buy new pants yesterday.

Wow. I feel like that is what carb's do to me, in general. That's why I just love PB.

I did not like almond butter until my friend introduced me to the Trader Joe's variety with toasted flax seeds. That is incredible stuff. I can use it as a dip for carrots or put a big dollop in a smoothy. But ... I don't turn into a monster.

Now ... Fage full fat plain yogurt does that to me. I could eat two cups on one sitting and go looking for more ... So yeah, I have not bought that in awhile. I used to roll my eyes when people talked about "trigger foods". I am amongst the converted and roll my eyes no more.

Hahahaha! Hilarious! Almond butter has become my candy.

The majority of my animal fats come from beef (sorry!). Today, for example, I bought myself a 19oz ribeye steak for dinner (an extravagant indulgence, but as I'll have fasted for 24 hous, and as I walked 19 miles yesterday, I think it's deserved). On top of that, I do consume quite a lot of coconut oil. Around 500g a week. This has the same effect on me as animal fat. I also eat organic, pastured butter quite often. Dinner last night was steak cooked in 50g coconut oil, and mushrooms fried in 25g butter. I was stuffed *in a good way, i.e. not bloated*, and am still not hungry now (22 hours later).

I know you mentioned you don't eat red meat or pork. When I started out PB, I ate a lot of chicken legs and thighs, as these can be quite fatty. I also used to eat a lot of cream. Lots of ways to get animal fats. I'd recommend trying to slowly up your intake of coconut, as well as including fatty cuts of the meats you can eat, and experimenting with eating pork (belly is amazing). Also lots of butter and cream, for now. Some people will disagree but I believe it's a valid substitute for 'proper' animal fats.
