  • new to primal blueprint lifestyle

I have the primal blueprint and am using daily fit to monitor my carbs and have successfully lost 10 pounds, over the last 3 months, mostly from my abdomen. My question is how to avoid ketosis. I have recently experienced the bad breath, poor sleep and shallow quick respiration with excessive thirst. This happened when my carb intake was between 50 to 150 daily. Does one have to keep the carb. level above 150 to avoid these nasty side effects? I would like to be able to continue on the pb without any side effects.

Can't imagine why you'd be in ketosis on 150g carbs a day?

Have you tried those ketostix to make absolutely sure that's what's going on?

Beyond that, maybe give a typically day's food intake so we can see what the balance is like.

Zone diet on and off for several years....worked, but too much focus on exact meal composition

Ketosis is good for you if you want to lose weight. It's *how* you use fat to lose weight. Why would you want to avoid it? The side effects do subside as your body adjusts to running on fat rather than on carbs.
Primal eating in a nutshell: If you are hungry, eat Primal food until you are satisfied (not stuffed). Then stop. Wait until you're hungry again. Repeat.

Might be carb flu if you've just changed over. Not likely ketosis at those levels. It will pass if you stick with it.

150/day should not put you in Ketosis, what carbs are you eating?

Did you say this started recently? If so, can you think of anything you have changed?

I have been feeling worse since I last posted. More Ketosis symptoms. I haven't been able to find any medical data that supports that ketosis is good, all articles warn of dangerous side effects.

Sounds to me like you might be potassium deficient.

Carb Flu and a general feeling like A$$ for awhile is a right of passage into this lifestyle. Many have had the same, many worse than you. everyone is different. Don't worry about all the research right now. You are in Carb Detox and Sugar detox. I highly doubt that 150g of Carbs is putting you in ketosis. Everyone who goes primal goes through some degree of discomfort for a short time. and if you are only a short time in, you can certainly bounce back and forth with degrees of low energy and a feeling of funk in general. Make sure the food you are eating is primarily dark green leafy's and such. Salads are best. Drink lots of fluids, and get some rest. In a short time this will all be behind you and you will be loving it. For Reals.

Carb flu after 3 months? HIs/Her body should have adjusted by now. I thought carb flu was only a week or two at beginning.

carb flu can come back repeatedly if your intake of fruits or any type of sugary substance such as raw honey is too high.... and then you dump it. If you don't permanently detox yourself in a cold turkey approach it's likely that you are going to experience those types of symptoms. You gotta ditch all the sweet stuff at least initially, to get the body detoxed. This of course is just my experience with it..... I am sure others would and will debate this.

If you are experiencing Ketosis and don't want to be, simply up your carbohydrates. This may require lowering your fat and/or protein intake. Your weight loss won't be affected so long as you keep your calories in check.
