  • Grass fed beef and stomach pains

I was looking in to buying part of a grass fed cow through a local farm, but read somewhere to try grass fed beef first to make sure you like it. I picked up a pound of GF flank steak at Whole Foods and we had it for dinner last night. I like it allright - a bit chewier and gamier than grain fed, but I like it. However, it gave me gas pains and some stomach cramps later. I wasn't sure if that was from the meat at first, but I had the leftovers for lunch today and same thing happened. Nobody else in my family had any symptoms like that. Is that sometimes normal? Is there an adjustment curve? We had a bunch of wild venison last year with no side effects.

I was going to try some GF burger tomorrow just to be sure.

Do you generally eat a lot of any beef? The enzymes required to digest meat can apparently take some time to be optimally produced if you haven't eaten beef in a long time.

That's an odd one for sure. Try a little more GF meat, maybe from a different ranch and see how it goes. A lot ow weird things screw with my stomach (green beans, avocados, some veggies like carrots and cabbage cooked, but not raw, etc), but not meat. Never meat.

+1 that is an odd one. I can't see how grass fed beef would be different to non grass fed in terms of digestion. Is it possible that you've got a passing stomach bug? Can you get some non grass fed beef today and try that?

When I switched to grass fed, I noticed absolutely no change in digestive issues. Could it possibly be any vegetables you were eating along with the meat or was it meat alone?

I have to take a digestive enzyme before I eat meat or I get the same thing... mind you I was pretty much veggie before I ended up going Primal. But they do help me a lot.. I take a Quest Vegan Formula with all natural ingredients. I pop one pill before I eat a meal with meat...

This is very odd. I would give it another chance or 2 and see how you react. What else did you eat with your steak?

The only stomach pains should be that of the cow.

I'll give it another shot or two.

Try chewing the meat more, get your saliva going really good, do not drink much if at all with it (do not dillute). Digestion starts with saliva. Also, I think I heard cooking it on lower heat for longer breaks down grassfed meat better?
