  • carbs VS net carbs

I count my whole carbs, but in many online communities they talk about net carbs. how do they figure what net carbs are and how they affect the body? I can't figure out the science behind that, it seems like a way for them to eat more junk without the guilt LOL! Any one care to explain?

"Net carbs" was invented by Dr. Atkins. His logic: fiber isn't digested, so it doesn't count - only count the carbs that actually get into your bloodstream that might spike your insulin levels. So subtract fiber carbs from total carbs, and you get "net" carbs - the digestible ones.

I think it's kind of a clunky way to do it, but that's where it came from. His recommendation of 20 net carbs/day is roughly equivalent to Mark's 50 total carbs/day if you're eating a fair amount of non-starchy veggies (like your big-ass salad, for example).
Primal eating in a nutshell: If you are hungry, eat Primal food until you are satisfied (not stuffed). Then stop. Wait until you're hungry again. Repeat.

It is definitely a way to eat more without guilt. I look at net carbs when I am trying to justify some cheats.
