  • Is it safe to eat coconut oil out of a plastic container

Trying to decide if it's worth it to buy coconut oil in a plastic container versus a glass container. Coconut oil sold in plastic containers cost less...

Also, have you found it cheaper to buy coconut oil on-line? I haven't....surprised by this...by the time you include the shipping cost there is not any difference in price.

I get a big 60-ounce (or so) plastic tub of unrefined coconut oil off of Amazon every month. Beats buying it at Whole Foods.

Great stuff. I wouldn't worry about the plastic. Just don't heat it up.

Thanks. I bought the same brand and size last summer. By November I noticed the oil had turned a slight yellow color at the bottom of the container. Have you had this happen to your coconut oil? I go through a 54 oz. conatiner in 6 months.

That may not actually be cause for alarm. Many less refined coconut oils have a brownish-yellow component that tends to form a sediment near the bottom, especially when they naturally melt and recrystallize as the temperature fluctuates. This happens to my high-quality coconut oil which is in a glass jar as well.

Good to know. What brand do you buy?

Tropical Traditions. Pro-tip: wait until it goes on sale since they do a 2-for-1 special every two or three months.

Went to the Tropical Traditions website. Which coconut oil do you prefer (gold or green)? Ever purchase the coconut creme?

I buy whichever one is on sale. I seem to recall that they're both quite a bit stronger tasting than any coconut oil I had previously tasted, but I got accustomed to it pretty quickly. I have bought the coconut creme and it was decent but not what I expected. Mine separated quite quickly into a top layer of coconut oil and a bottom layer of crumbly coconut super-flavor. I ate the coconut oil and now crumble the nommy mealy bits onto desserts.

I really wouldn't worry about getting your coconut oil from a plastic container. If you're concerned, then I'd just say that if you want or need to heat it up for any reason, then just scoop a little out and put it in a glass container for heating purposes. If you're not heating the coconut oil, then it really shouldn't matter. I do order mine online. However, I place a large order of it along with my other supplements all at the same time, so the shipping doesn't end up really being an issue at all. And I save a lot by ordering all of my supplements online even with shipping factored in, as long as I place one large order every 3-4 months.

Oil is a solvent so it is inevitably going to leech some plastic if stored in a plastic container. You will notice the plastic taste the longer you keep opening the lid and exposing it to oxygen which will speed up the breakdown of plastic. I first noticed this effect from bottled water. The freshly opened bottle had no plastic taste, but as I kept opening it, after a day or so, I could taste the plastic.

So now whenever I buy a 4L bottle of water, I poor it into glass containers. You can do the same with your coconut oil, just buy the cheaper ones in plastic bottles and then transfer them to mason jars.

Good points! I'll put the oil in glass jars, too.
