  • Is coconut flour supposed to be low-fat?

    I bought some today, organic and very cheap, and on the package it claims to be low-fat and they actually pressure steam it to remove the fat... is this normal? I mean, it's a flour, so I suppose it HAS to be low-fat, right? I just need to know before I buy more again.

    That's kind of odd. Coconut flour, being made from coconut, should be fairly high in fat (not that there's anything wrong with that!). It sounds like they have reduced the fat.

      The fat is removed to make it behave more like flour. I don't think this is a negative in any way, since you add fat (butter etc.) when baking.

        If you want more natural alternative with higher fat and less carb just use fine dessicated coconut instead

            its realy easy to find here in UK, its usually inthe cooking ingredients isle used for cake deco etc, its just dried coconut flesh thats been ground up to a slightly coarse texture, not as fine or processed as the flour which I believe is higher carb, but will work in most recipes

              Nice one. Will get some and give it a try.

              Tescos do coconut just about everything except coconut flour bit of a shame but they do dessicated coconut.

                I know! Mine even does coconut oil at 1.50 a jar! And creamed coconut is the cheapest source of coconut butter anywhere

                  Ollie -Desiccated coconut is a term used in UK/NZ/Australia for dried unsweetened 'finely' grated coconut as opposed to shreds, flakes or chips of coconut. I'm sure it will be in the baking aisle of your local supermarket. God knows why they call it 'desiccated'. Hope this helps. Not sure what it is referred to in the rest of the world.

                    I don't mind the low-fat and high carb (good for my post work out pancakes!), I just want to know if this is normal. I read Mark's article on coconut flour and indeed he says it's a normal part of processing.

                    I might try dessicated coconut in the future.

                      For the UK guys, if you're near an Indian / Chinese supermarket, look for the sacks of East End stuff - anything from almonds to coconut flour (and lentils, rice, etc etc). Usually the Indian grocers have shelves of all the different goodies. I also used the wheat to make those wheat heat bags
