  • Primal Journal (Elorajade)

Alrighty, I decided that I should perhaps start a journal. I've been lurking for a long time. I think I found this blog via Lyle McDonald, I was getting really desperate to regain my health, loose weight etc.

I have some specific goals that I want to reach, fitness wise, and I can't do that 80lbs overweight.

I've been overweight since shortly after I started the pill I put on 90 lbs on my already heavy frame in a matter of 2 years. I was going through a lot of emotional trauma at the time though, so I didn't connect it to the pill, I don't blame it 100%, I'm an emotional eater, so I stuffed my feelings.

Anyway, I've done the gamut of diets.

Atkins - lost maybe 15 lbs in 4 months or so, but felt like hell and couldn't maintain the schedule. As soon as I started back with grains it all came back.

CW/with a dietition - Yeah, she told me I was cheating. I was working out 60-90 minutes a day doing cardio, and eating less than 1200 calories a day and not loosing a lb.

I also tried 900 calories a day, and mad cardio sessions and didn't loose anything.

I've done so many different variations of dieting, and I just don't loose weight.

While in university, I got really interested in nutrition and pregnancy and began reading Sally Fallons Nourishing Traditions. Thats when I started to get an inkling for what may be wrong with the SAD. I knew that the preservatives and chemicals that are in everything couldn't be good.

I banned HFCS from the house several years ago and I try really hard to only bring natural foods into the house.

I also knew that something in my body is majorly messed up. I could do everything right, and not loose weight. The ONLY time I could loose weight was while pregnant. I lost 40lbs with each pregnancy. I kept it off with my first pregnancy, but my second, it came back after I gave birth (just the weight I lost while pregnant with #2).

Right now I struggle with exhaustion a lot, so excercise usually consists of doing my regular thing around the house (cleaning, laundry, running the kids to sports, running my business, doing errands etc). By the time I even consider working out, or doing some weight resistance excercises, I feel like a pile of goo. I lay in bed a LOT and think of all the things I should have done during the day. I SO want to be that family you see, out there and playing and having fun together. I want to keep up with my kids, play with them. I don't want to feel 70.

I keep falling off the wagon though, hence starting the journal. Something that I can post in every day (along with sparkpeople!) hopefully will keep me motivated and on the wagon.

I keep starting and stopping when I don't see/feel results, when I don't get that awesome energy loaded feeling that you all talk about. I did have it for a short time yesterday, but then last night I had a glass of wine with some almonds, that lead to some cheesecake and some watermelon.

Today, I woke up with sore joints and muscles, brain fog and just exhaustion (had two short naps...fell asleep sitting up pretty much).

So, not sure what the culprit was.

I supplement with a LOT of stuff. I've been experimenting for years because I've had mega problems in the past with low energy. Thats putting it mildly. About 1pm every day I'd lapse into a coma for a good 2 hours. No matter where I was or what I was doing, it was like my body would just shut down. I never wanted to be doing anything like driving during that time, or having to be mentally "aware". Some days I could push through, but that didn't happen often. I tried Greens Plus, and a ton of other supplements that were supposed to help with energy. A natropath gave me a b12 shot, and that helped greatly. So, now I take B12 daily and can at least stay conscious in the afternoon. I always know when I forget to take it cause nap time happens. I had even tried eating nothing but protein for lunch and that didn't help.

Quick rundown on what I take

    Krill oil - 2000
    Salmon Oil - 2000
    B12 - 1200mg
    B Complex
    L-glutamine - 1000 mg
    Cal Mag -700/250
    Chromium Picolinate - 200mg
    Vit D, 8000 IUI
    Potassium 100 mg
    zinc 50mg

    There may be more.

    So, todays eats;

    2 eggs
    4 slices bacon

    200 g Haddock
    1 tbsp coconut oil
    40g havarti

    1/3 cup coconut milk
    2/3 cup blueberries

Still haven't decided what else I should eat, as my calories may be a touch low. But I'm not really hungry, so who knows.

    CALORIES CARBS FAT PROTEIN
    1,119 19 71 81

Ok, decided on adding a BAS as I started to get hungry

    Spinach
    Tomatoes
    Cucumbers
    Goat Cheese
    Chicken
    Dressing
    Olives
    Onions

    Updated calories/intake for the day

    CALORIES CARBS FAT PROTEIN
    1,596 34 (8%) 100 (60%) 123 (32)

A little higher than I would have liked it calorie wise.

Caloric Expenditure (per GoWear Fit) 2201

    Sleep Efficiency 85% 8 hrs 19 min

Right now, I'm aiming for good health and increased energy. I'm hoping the weight loss will come as well. Sooo sick and tired of being sick and tired and fat.

This is mostly about potassium and vitamin D. I promise. Have a look at the links at the bottom of my page. It'll get better.

Do you have any idea how long it takes to correct itself? I've taken Vit D for a long time (since taking the B12, I also supped with about 4000 IUI), and have only recently upped it to 8000 IUI. The potassium, i added recently cannot remember when. Thats another thing, memory like a seive. I carry around a mini brain (blackberry) so I don't forget anything. Cause, I forget it all!

It takes about 3 months for a given level of supplementation to max out.

        How much potassium?

I also carry around a minibrain - my iphone with pocket informant. pocket informant syncs with my 13 google calendars and keeps me on track every day - including texting me reminders for every apt, every carpool every everything. But my life is very complicated;p so there is literally no way to remember it all.

Crappy sleep last night. Went to bed at 10, read till 10:30, laid awake till 11 when I finally took a melatonin. Woke up on and off.

Had planned on getting up at 6:30 to walk on the treadmill and do some weight trainning. That didn't happen, was soooo tired that I reset my alarm to get the eldest up for school.

Started laundry, did the dishes and cleaned up the kitchen from last night. Have more energy today thankfully, so I plan on getting outside to work on this coming weekends community yard sale. Lots of heavy lifting there! Of course, this is contingent on getting the 3 year old to eat her strawberries and yogurt.

Got outside for about 90 minutes organizing the sale before the sun got too hot. I don't worry about myself, just the 3yo who is very fair, I don't use sunscreen unless we plan on living on the beach for the day, so I just try to be sensible with sun exposure. She also got hungry, so it was time to come in anyway. Made her a "le melange plate" Cheese, cooked egg whites (she doesn't like the yolk), cucumber spears and kielbassa. She's still working on her strawberries and yogurt from this morning (of course that was after a bowl of blueberries and yogurt).

Did more work outside, then vacuumed the house, cleaned the bathrooms, took the kids to soccer and came home and crashed.

B: 2 eggs fried in bacon fat
            3 slices bacon.
Coffee - tried with stevia and 2 tbsp of coconut milk. Will stick with cream. Blech.

            L: 200g haddock
1tsp of coconut oil to cook it in
(I think my farmers market vendor is ripping everyone off, I bought a 1.25lb bag of raw haddock, and have only gotten 400g of cooked fish from it. I cannot see 225g of liquid being cooked out of the fish. Somethings "fishy!" (Had to be said).

            D: 200g sirloin steak
9 shrimp done on the BBQ

Snack: 1/2 cup coconut milk over 200g of strawberries BEST treat ever.

            CALORIES CARBS FAT PROTEIN
            Totals: 1,378 20 71 142

            Calories Burned 2895

Need more fat in there. *sigh* what a balancing act.

Nom nom nom nom. I've never been a big meat eater, but I'm certainly developing a "taste" for yummy yummy meat. I've foound that I've started really looking forward to the next meatfest. Which is REALLY weird.

Hey elorajade - just popping in to say I read through your new thread. I got some crappy sleep too. We'll keep each other posted and solve this together.

also - I have a lot of the symptoms that you have - inability to lose weight being the one that prompted me to have all my blood/urine/saliva tests done by an MD/holistic med. It was quite enlightening. Hormones and many neurotransmitters and amino acids were off. I'm just starting the journey to repair it all. Hormones mess with weight loss, and mess with sound sleep - I'm on the road to repair that and I'll keep you posted.

Oh, yes Nova, please keep me update with what you're doing. Were you ever diagnosed with a hormone disorder?

IN 1996 I self diagnosed PCOS. Even after getting bloodwork with an endocrinologist, who told me that "some women just get hair there, and maybe go talk to a dietitition". *facepalm* I could literally have books, and pages of all my excercises, calories eaten vs calorie output that SHOULD result in a loss, and they'd go "well, numbers don't lie, so you must be cheating!".

IN 2005 I saw a reproductive specialist (I had my first, after 10 years of trying and requested to see a specialist because I wanted to get pregnant again soon) and he diagnosed me with PCOS.

Now, I had bloodwork done in 2009 and the OBGYN said "no, you're hormones are JUST fine, run more and stop snacking off your kids plate". Grr.

So, according to the regular old doctors, there is nothing wrong with me. But I know that isn't the case.

I think my sleeplessness last night may have been because I ate late, however I have had many a night in the past where I'm exhasusted but just don't get quality sleep no matter how tired I am.

What a crapola night. In bed at 10, read till 10:30, fell asleep pretty quick. Was up on and off peeing all night. Then at 4am was attacked by major stomach acid. Ended up throwing up at 4am and again at 7am. Also somewhere in there, the youngest realized she went to bed without her "puppy" and there was drama that involved me going on a late night hunt. Getting sick and tired of interrupted sleeps.

Sleep efficiency 7:34 min (87%) according to gowearfit. According to the program, I was up 10 times in the night.

My stomach is a roiling ball of unhappiness right now. Having some green tea.

Today, more work in the garage and working on a customer wholesale order that needs to go out today. I also want to hit the grocery store for some coconut flour or almond flour, going to check out the gluten free aisle.

                  B: 85 gr Kippered herring

Ok, had a bit of a breakdown today, on top of the above ended up having a few strawberries coated in coconut milk, two 85% cocoa chocolate, a handfull of semi sweet chocolate chips (DOH!), and three small squares of dove truffle things. Not sure what happened there. Apparently I needed chocolate.

Now, this morning I had a touch of what I tend to call my "mid cycle feel sorry for myself, throw in the towel doldrums". It wasn't near as bad as it has been in the past. I was still anti-social, mostly reading and not wanting to interact with my kids or anyone else.

I can expect two days of this, thats how long it normally lasts. The difference between now and last time though is that I didn't go on a complete carb binge, end up crying, blow up at my kids or feel like a complete loser (for whatever the reason of the moment is).

Hopefully I'll be able to keep the real badness at bay tomorrow as its a market day and I'll be confronted with all sorts of yummy home baked goodness.

OK, MUCH better sleep last night. It was fabulous. Even with my little binge last night I still dropped another pound. WOO! Nice to see the scale moving down with a change in diet.

                      Eats today:

                      B: 2 eggs
                      3 bacon

L: Avocado, strawberries & coconut milk - I wasn't really hungry, in fact I felt full from breakfast but I needed to eat something as I was heading out to manage the market and would be faced with some uber yummy baked goods that I would normally quite happily have for supper in lieu of real food.
D: 2 sausages, without the bun, some saurkraut and mustard to go with it.

No idea on calorie count. Not worried about it currently as I'm not even hungry.

Quite the busy day with the market, was disapointed though one of my vendors cancelled at the last minute, and I was SO looking forward to her organic salad mix and her fresh japanese turnips that are orgasam inducing. I don't think I can go back to the bagged stuff from the store!

Last night I also had another bowl of strawberries and coconut milk. That stuff is addictive. Of course, it helps that they were fresh, locally grown organic strawberries and NOTHING can match their taste!

Last nights sleep was OK, but I was a bit shocked to see my weight go up 2lbs overnight from when I weighed before bed. I was kind of looking forward to seeing that scale drop another lb. Oh well, I bet it was water retention as I had quite the workout yesterday, and my muscles are achy today. IN a good way. Had I been naughty, I'd be sore all over in the bad way. Makes me wonder if I have fibromyalgia, or a touch of it anyway. My mother has it and apparently its genetic. But I won't let it stop me.

Ok, yesterday was another busy day, worked in the garage to get ready for the yard sale, and my eldest decided she wants to run a popsicle stand at the yard sale, so we ran around last night buying the supplies (on her dime, I wasn't funding it!).

Lunch: Made the BEST pork patties, ground pork, ground coconut, maple syrup, onion, S&P and other spices. SO simple. Fried in a pan with coconut oil. The lb of meat made 6 patties, and I ate three on the spot and literally snacked on the remaining all day. SO good.

Dinner: BAS - fresh local salad mix, goat cheese, tomatoes, onions, cuke, avocado. Note to self, wash salad mix better....found an earwig on my plate when I was 2/3 done. EWWWW. At least it was fresh! Tried not to freak out. Hate those fuckers.

Snack - handful of almonds and some 85% chocolate.

Still only averaging about 83% efficiency in sleep every night. Lots of waking up though the night. Blech. What I wouldn't give for a SOLID night sleep.

Calories were definately high for yesterday, wanted to keep them lower for sure. Closer to 1500.

I feel like a little old woman today, I am SO sore, and I suspect it was from the almonds. I felt this way the day after I ate almonds, had some wine and a mini cheesecake. At the time I thought it was the cheesecake, but now I seriously think it was the almonds. Serious bummer. I love almonds.

I may have to experiment down the road.

Today, was great right up till dinner time. Since the husband has been deployed, I've treated the kids to McDonalds every friday (its also a hellofaday, so its just easier to get take out). I decided to "treat" myself to an angus burger, salad and a coke zero. Tonight we also had a lot of work to do in the garage to get ready for the yard sale tomorrow.

Well, I get home, take out in hand, got the girls theirs ready, opened mine to toss the bun and eat the meat (was soooo looking forward to the burger and melted cheddar, veggies mmmmm), and there was no MEAT on the damn thing. Seriously? NO MEAT.

Mama was NOT a happy fucking camper. I called the mcdonalds, who, by the way never gets orders right and I frequently sit in the drive through going through the bags to ensure that the kids got the toys and straws and chocolate milk, FSM help me if they forget any of those things because there will be two very POd kids on my hands. Anyway, the manager really didn't give a shit and said that I could come in for a free one next time.

So, I (grumpily) grumbled to myself and decided to eat the damn cesar salad. I open it up and almost hurl. ICEBERG lettuce and limpy bacon. TOSS.

                            *sigh*

So, I made myself busy working in the garage to get ready for tomorrow and by the time I shuffled the kids into bed and made lunches for tomorrow, its now too late to eat.

                            So, calories for today?:

Lunch: BAS, goat cheese, avocado, cuke, canned salmon mixed with mayo, 4 large scampi/shrimp, onion.

I guess I can IF for the rest of the day/night and into tomorrow. Lets see, last meal at 1pm or so, if I eat breakfast at 8am = 19 hours

I've only done a few IFs and I AM trying to loose weight, so, there we go.

Garage sale day and it was insane out there. I had made a good breakfast before I opened the garage doors, good thing too, the sale was supposed to start at 9, and people were coming up the driveway at 7:30.

By the end of the day I was wilting.

                              B: Bacon & Eggs
                              L: fried ham
                              D: sirloin steak with mushrooms.

I think I'm eating far too much protein, and I re-did my numbers on spark people. I've been a little too "free" with eating it I think. I still need to remember that I am trying to reduce my weight. Although, I think now the carb addiction has been successfully battled.
