    Greetings!

Today is Day 6 of my rebirth into a primal lifestyle. I figured I would start keeping this Journal here so that you guys can yell at me when I do something wrong, and tell me how wonderful I am when I do something right. That’s how it works right? In all seriousness though, I’m going to keep this journal so that I can reflect back if I have any tough moments so that I can review how far I have come. I am going to repeat much of what I said in my intro post in the other forum here so that the first post in my journal has some background.

I'm a 34 year old man, I like long walks on the beach. I'm a brand spanking new beginner, my first day of primal was Saturday 4/5/2014. I have managed to cut all grains and grain products from my diet. The first trip to the grocery store on Sunday 4/6 was eye opening.

Over the past 20 years I have noticed a complete change in my behavior and personality. When I was young, I ate fruit, veggies, and meat, and had no sweet tooth at all. I had never tasted fast food or store bought sweets until I was around 13, this is just the way my mother did everything, she wasn't necessarily trying to be health conscious.

I was in the Military from 1997-2001. This is where I learned my love of beer. Since then I have been drinking beer FAR too often. I have come to the unscientific conclusion that I am addicted to starchy carbs, which make me want to drink beer, and vice versa. On days I eat bread of any kind, My blood sugar drops, it makes me want beer, I go home and binge drink, which leads me to the hangover and subsequent carb loading the next day. I have been reading all over the place and have come to the conclusion that carbs just don't work well for me. To be clear, it's not just carbs that make me drink, but it's a trigger.

I spent some time experimenting with my triggers to discover this. Once I did, I started practicing my google-fu to see if other people like me are out there. I really didn't know anything about primal prior to last week. I am going to bust my butt to give it a month and reevaluate how I feel.

Right now I am 5'9 and about 240 pounds. I carry it fairly well as I have lifted many heavy things in my day, but it's still too much weight. All of the years of beer haven't been good for me.
Right now I’m on day 6 and feeling great! When I went shopping on Saturday I bought a bunch of healthy primal foods and have been eating them all week (Eggs, Chicken, Veggies, Etc). Halfway through the week I started adding up what I had been eating and was startled to see I was averaging around 1400 calories per day and hadn’t really had any cravings. I intervened on my own behalf yesterday and bought some grass fed beef and made a couple of burgers to up the content. Next weeks shopping will be different. I wasn’t eating enough calories or fat. I bought some ketosticks and this morning was the first day I had moved up from “trace” to moderate.

I made some bulletproof coffee this AM using 2 Tbsp. of grass fed butter and 1 Tbsp. of MCT oil. So far I feel great, no digestive issues, tomorrow I may bump up to 2 Tbsp. MCT oil. I didn’t eat this AM but I brought a serving of almonds with me in case I start losing my mind prior to lunch at noon.

Next week I’m going to start the weight program again, the following week my goal is to start the cardio. I can already tell I’ve lost weight (water), I’m looking forward to continuing this. I’ve decided I’m not going to weigh myself, I’m going to do this strictly by how I feel/look. I figure a scale will treat this too much like a diet and a little less like a habit.

Looking forward to the weekend so I can try some steak or a burger with the guac-deviled eggs recipe I picked up here!

TLDR: Hi! Welcome to my head

    Entry #2

    This weeks summary:
It was 80 degrees, and then that night it was 30. If you don't like the weather in Virginia, wait an hour.

Saturday will make it two weeks since I started doing the Primal thing. I feel great and didn't have any Low-Carb Flu or anything of the sort. I started lifting again on Monday, doing a 3x5 routine. I have been lifting weights off and on for 3-5 years, but have always done legpress in the place of Squats, I was missing out! I have body parts that are sore that I didn't know existed. I also never did Power Cleans or Deadlifts, now I am all over it!

So far I can tell that my pants are loosening up, and I feel better in general. I have managed to up my calories a bit using snacks, but I have yet to really be extremely hungry. This morning I had a BP coffee with MCT Oil and Kerrygold Butter. It's now 1030, and I'm not hungry, so it's gotta be a good thing. I brought some (24) unroasted unsalted almonds just in case I needed to break glass for a hunger emergency.

I have decided that I am going to do weight measurements this weekend as well as take some "before" pictures. I'm guessing I've lost 10 pounds, but I have no proof of that except for my clothes. I know it's water weight, but it makes me happy anyway, so don't rain on my parade.

I went to the Doctor on the day of my first post to get Chantix to help me quit smoking. My quit date is next week and I cant wait! I spoke to the doctor about my plan for nutrition. She was supportive and seemed excited for me. I explained to her that I thought I had issues with regulating my blood sugar, and that I was moving in the primal direction. She wanted me to check back in three months about the diet and smoking, to make sure all is well. We got into a conversation about the food pyramid/recommendations and she agreed with everything I was saying about the Primal lifestyle. It was exciting to get that support from a doctor. I'm probably going to do some sprints/HIIT this weekend in between riding my motorcycle and hanging with family. My boyfriendly duties have dictated that I'm going to the circus Sunday, not too enthusiastic about it.

My ratios for the day are 58% fat, 43% protein, 13% carb. This includes my almond snack, which I'm not sure I will need.

    TLDR: Still rockin'

Hey Vappid, I'm new to Primal also...started two weeks ago. Sounds like you are doing really well! I'm also a smoker, though not a heavy one...like 4-5 cigs/day on average, but still...
My quit date is on Good Friday...yikes, that's tomorrow already! I wanted to wish you well with your goal to stop the smoking and keep up the great work!

Wow, so many changes at once! It sounds like you're taking it in stride

Good luck on everything, especially the smoking...it can be tough, but I quit 18 years ago (after many attempts), and if I can do it, anyone can!

          Still kickin!

So Thursday is my quit smoking day. Gonna do some running when that comes around. I woke up this morning actually wishing I could go lift weights, but since my days are Mon, Tues, and Wed, I putzed around the house for an hour instead.

Had a BP/primal coffee this AM. 2 tbsp. MCT, 2 tbsp, kerrygold butter, 2 egg yolks. It was good. Going to do Chipotle for lunch, and have some leftover sloppy joe meat w/o bread when I get home for dinner. 2 or 3 times per week I've been doing a Barbacoa taco salad from Chipotle with no beans/rice and toppings of guacamole, hot sauce, cheese, and sometimes sour cream. It's easy because I don't have to get any grains and the nutrition calculator for Chipotle is online.

          https://www.chipotle.com/en-us/menu/...alculator.aspx

I learned that I need to buy a battery for my scale. I think the number was 2032, I'm going on a battery hunt today. The lifting weights has already started showing benefits. Hulk Smash!

Welcome to the smoke-free side of life! Just take it easy and have a plan for your cravings when they come (not if but when). I quit in Dec. 2006 and if I can do it anyone can!! I love lifting weights too....I get the most bang for my buck with compound movements and keeping it heavy....I find I get the most noticeable results quickly. I also feel better about myself and the world around me haha

I quit for about 6 years from 2007-2012, and pretty much forgot about smoking, never had a craving. Beer is the catalyst for most of my smoking cravings, and since I am avoiding that for a different reason, I'm optimistic!

Since you mentioned compound movements, I've been doing a 3x5 routine, and it has been awesome so far. I'm in and out of the gym quick, and I am using muscles that are almost impossible to use in your typical gym machines. The downside is that I'm always paranoid about my form and/or injuries. I work out at 3 AM so I don't have anyone who can critique my form for me. I can't even figure out why one rep max because I don't have a spotter.

                  My sets this morning were

                  Squat: 235 5 reps, 3 sets.
Deadlift: 150 pounds 5 reps, 1 set (I know I can do much, I'm just trying to make sure I'm doing it correctly)
Bench Press: 235 pounds 5 reps, 3 sets

I alternate workouts Monday, Wed, and Fri. My other workout is

                  Squat
                  Power Clean
                  Shoulder Press

Squatting 3 times per week was ROUGH the first week or so, I'm coming up on week 3 now. I have always lifted somewhat, but since I am always alone, I often have done legpress and other machines as opposed to squats and free weights, assuming they were close enough. I now know that they are nowhere close! While I am doing sets of 235 in squats, I can go to the legpress machine and do over 300 easily. I feel like those years of legpresses stunted my growth!

                    Today is a good day.

I finally got a battery and weighed myself this morning. I came in at 220, down 20 pounds from 3 weeks ago when I started primal. I'm pretty excited about that. I feel great and I'm losing weight (I'm a poet and didn't know it). No sugar cravings of any kind, no slipups, etc. It has been really easy to move into this lifestyle for me so far.

I took the day off yesterday in order to do some landscaping around my house. I had a Bp coffee at around 0730 and didn't eat again until 230 PM when I realized I had worked through lunch. I ate 4 hard boiled eggs at around 230. I put my brand new infrared grill together at around 4 PM (WHO IN THE HELL MAKES THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR THOSE THINGS?). At around 6 I had a Ribeye Steak and some roasted Brussel Sprouts. Life was good.

I was at the gym this morning and started getting concerned with my form on power cleans. I don't want to cause any back problems for myself, as that would significantly impede my progress overall. I think I may switch to 5x5 and replace the power clean with the barbell row for the time being. If I ever get to the point that I am working with a trainer, I will resume the Power Cleans under adult supervision.

I was late coming to work so I didn't have time to eat. I noticed last week that if I don't eat after the gym, it leaves me feeling strange, BP coffee doesn't cut it. I stopped at Circle K and got 2 hard boiled eggs and two sticks of Cheddar Cheese. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good, right?

                    Also... ITS FRIDAY!

Day 3, the non-smokers have accepted me as one of their own. My last cigarette was Friday night. I'm on a roll!

                      Untitled-1372.png

I felt a little nauseous before work this AM. I went to the Gym at 0300 and didn't have anything to eat until around 0550. I'm pretty sure this was the cause of my Nasuea. I had 4 hard boiled eggs, some ON Whey and 1 serving of Macadamia nuts. Once I ate that, I felt like a million bucks.

Weighed myself again on Sunday morning. I was 219. Sunday is going to be my official day for weighing.

Between not eating after the gym, and switching from 3x5 to 5x5, I'm not expecting that nausea to be a regular thing.

I'm thinking about going for a run in the AM, now that I'm a non smoker!

                        LOL @ that sign ahahaa

I feel the same way since starting Paleo/Primal (esp. when I have a BP coffee in the AM) no hunger! I was on vacation this past week, and was doing stuff around the house and had to remind myself to eat something. Also since starting this way o' life I haven't had any urges to cuddle with carb-y treats.

I can relate to the concerns with form. I too work out alone and have never had anyone check my form. I've been squatting/dl since about '97 or so but still (oh well if I was gonna break something it woulda been broke by now I guess) but i'm still scared of the OLY lifts like the power clean, snatch, etc....I had some exposure during my stint at Crossfit and I liked it. I'd like to get the $$ together to train a couple of times a week at a powerlifting gym but that $$ is going for grass-fed items at this time haha

I'm on day 11 of being a non-smoker! woot-woot!!! there were a couple temptations here and there...but i kept thinking...i'm eating healthier now, i'm trying to improve my QOL...why on earth would i be ingesting toxic substances into my body? that kind of self-talk helped a lot.

So I weighed in yesterday, still at 219. I need to start doing BMI as well since I can tell I am still losing fat even though my weight is the same (maybe due to switching to 5x5 and/or creatine?). Not discouraged, still rocking! I spent the weekend stretching and stretching trying to increase my squat depth. I am able to get all the way down now, but the balance isn't there yet, I think due to ankle flexibility, I will continue to work on it. I was able to get slightly below parallel this AM while keeping flat feet.

I did HIIT on Saturday morning, 4 min warmup, 15 sec sprint, 1 min walk, repeat 10x. I will increase the sprinting time as I move forward.

I had some carbs this weekend! Made myself a primal meal that kicked ass! Warning: Food porn

Sweet Potato/mango roasted with Coconut oil/cinnamon.

Also, day 9 of no smoking! :P

Wow I just realized that I haven't posted here in over a month! I'm am still here, and still awesome!

So much has happened! Where do I begin?

A week or so after my last post in early May, I went to a conference in Philadelphia. I tried to stay primal throughout the visit, but it was impossible. I ended up in numerous situations having two pick the lesser of two evils in my meal choices. It made me feel like trash, but when I got home, I jumped back on the wagon and have been rocking ever since.

I have had somewhat of a relapse/issue with quitting smoking. I went out and bought a Vaporizer (vape). I have been using it with no nicotine and it has been great so far. I found an Oil/Juice that tastes shockingly like my old cigarettes. It's probably not a great idea long term, but I'll use it until I get the nicotine out of my system at least and hold onto it for emergency situations (Bar night, etc,).

What else happened? I realized the form on my smith machine squats sucked. I had to spend 2-3 days stretching to even get into the correct form. Once I did, I had to lower the weight significantly. I am guilty of doing 3/4 squats. This is no longer the case. It does make me wish my gym had a squat rack and not the smith machine garbage.

So right now I am rocking 5x5. Reps are below for this week.

                              Workout A
                              Shoulder Press - 145x5x5
                              Deadlift - 140x5x5
                              Squats 175x5x5

                              Workout B
                              Bench Press 245x5x5
                              Barbell Row 125x5x5
                              Squats again!

I have been adding in Dips, Pull ups, and barbell curls intermittently as I have the energy. So far it has been great, I'm noticing myself getting significantly sexier every day. I'm also playing centerfield for a softball team, so I at least get some sprints in naturally that way. I ran 5k a couple of times in the past few weeks and had no issues at all. Previous asthma issues appear to be all but gone.

Last time I weighed I was 214, but I am tempted just to toss the scale in the trash. I am recreating my body, and the scale isn't an accurate measurement of fitness, how I look and feel is. All of these muscles weight a lot!

Grilled a ribeye for each day this week at lunch. I've been eating 4 eggs and 5 Oz of ground chicken for breakfast. If I eat a big lunch, I'm not really hungry when I get home, so I have been making a casein protein shake with about 6 cups of spinach, coconut milk, and blueberries. I really look forward to it, the shakes are delicious. I decided to just accept some of the chemicals in the protein in this case since its protein and flavor that I'm after. Why am I explaining myself to you? Quit being so judgmental!
