A friend of mine wants to go do the Dallas Turkey Trot Race which is usually Thanksgiving Day. They have a 8k run, 5k fun run, and 5k walk.

I've never in my life run a 5k. Never been much of a runner really. The only running I have ever done was Air Force PT and I wasn't fond of that. So this is all gonna be really new to me.

How about you? Are you much of a runner and how are you preparing? Maybe you can give me some pointers!! . I hope to keep up this new improved active me for years to come. Who knows... I may become an competitive runner! Lol (highly unlikely)

I am currently training for the Shamrock Marathon, which as the name implies, is around St Paddy's day. If you want to start runnning, look in to a Couch to 5k, or something similar. When I run, I use an Ipod Nano for music, and I have it loaded with podcasts from PodRunner... They have hundreds of podcasts of music that vary in length and pace. They even have an Interval set that is similar to the Couch to 5K series.... Initially I started with walking 15 minutes, then 20, then 30... worked up to walking an hour, interspersed jogging for a few minutes until I could jog 15 minutes.... then added time, and increased the pace. Last year for my birthday I celebrated by doing a Marine Corps PFT... and passed..... The last one of those I passed was 25ish years ago... I only run 3 days a week, and do one long run on the weekend.... You can do this mud run thing..... if my fat old butt can do this, you certainly can! lol

      • Good morning I recently started this year doing my first obstacle race and found them to be an absolute blast. I've never run only for softball 35 years agobut its not a steady run because of all the obstacles. Theres also a small wait to go thru obstacles so you can always rest. Some people are in it to beat the clock but I just go to have fun. As I was approaching 50 this year, I decided to get in shape and lose weight. I went paleo almost a year ago, lost 35 lbs., and completed 4 mud runs! Looking forward to a bunch more this year. Rugged maniac was most difficult for me so I think it will be another year before I would be ready for spartan race. Good luck and have fun

        • Em...hope your meetings go ok. Vegi trays are always safe to take...or a fruit one. With a primal friendly dip, that should help with food. Maybe lettuce roll ups with gluten free, nitrite free lunch meat. HEB carries some. Boiled shrimp platter is also good. But a bit pricey. I know these suggestions are a little late...sorry!

Awesome! Thanks for sharing. I'm really forward to it. My friend that's doing the 5K with me said last night she would also enter the mud run, so now I won't be alone. Yah!!! And I have to agree, Spartan races look a little more intense than a newbie like me would be willing to tackle.

I really need to start preparing now. I have no endurance. I've been engrossed in lifting (which I love) and have done little high intensity cardio.

They went fine. I took none primal/paleo snacks cause I couldn't figure anything out. Veggie trays were already there. I ate off them and skipped the dairy based dips. I made an awesome apple dip though. I made it again last night for my husband's uncle's 60th birthday party we had here. None is left. They loved it. It's 1 block of cream cheese, 1/4 powdered sugar, 3/4 brown sugar, 1/2 cup Heath Toffee bar crumble( they have it with the choc chips bags on baking aisle). Mix all that together then just slice up a bunch of apples for dipping. It's a big hit. If I wasn't so sensitive to dairy I'd devour it myself. I love toffee. And it's quick and simple.

              • Spring like weather in January really messes with ya! Ethan and I worked in the yard yesterday in our shorts, then I woke up this morning to reality... 37degree air. It woke me up for my early morning workout that's for certain. It's suppose to get to a high of 49 to day but get nice and warmer as we get to the end of the week. I've been working to convert a day lily flower bed into our kitchen garden. I have planted onions so far. Can't wait for springtime to Really get here. I got major gardening plans I'm ready to move on!!

I went and worked out this morning at the gym. I've been concentrating on core, back and upper body, because my knee is giving me issues. I fell hard on to asphalt around Thanksgiving. The Dr thinks my bruise has "calcified". That's a new one on me. I had X-ray's last Thursday but won't hear anything for a few days yet. Slow VA Dr! Thursday I'm finally be sent to the foot specialist at the hospital from an injury I got in May 2013. Yah... It's that slow going!!!!

I went to do some work on my historical society yesterday, and it turns out I have many more projects on my plate now! Oh boy!! Seems my plate just get fuller and fuller.

I'm pretty content with my health right now. My weight is holding around 137-140. My arms are becoming more define. I'm content with the shape of my legs. I'm sleeping much better lately since I moved my workout time to the a.m. Doing well eating, although I think I might need to increase my calories. I hate counting so I'm not sure how much I've been eating. I guess I should track a normal day or so to see.

                  • Yes I dropped off for a bit... But then I couldn't get back on. It was as though I was deleted, so I got frustrated and gave up. I still can't see much of what has been going on with many of you. The format has totally changed on here. If it wasn't for a certain friend on here that kept on pming me I probably would just have let this all go. But here I am. And the timing couldn't be more dire. Although my paleo diet has been consistent, my life's stress and health has seen better days.

To ya catch up.... My step mom has breast cancer. We have been doing chemo since about April. Her last one will be July 17. Surgery first of August for removing just the lump and then radiation until October. Booster shots after that until March of this coming year.

As though that weren't enough for one year on June 4th I visited my doctor. As most of you know I have a weak crumbling spine. Not that stops me from much but I have had increasing numbness and weakness in my hands and feet. Yes needless to say my exercise has halted and that just make me feel all that much worse. My doctor ran some test. An MRI cause she was thinking MS and a X-ray to check my spines deterioration. My spine is a wreak she said as we expected. I'm getting a new tens unit Monday prescribed to me to help deal with the pain since meds don't work for me anymore. I'll have an MRI of my neck area on July 22 because that's an area concerning her a lot right now.

Well here comes the kicker... although she isn't ruling out MS because I have so many of the symptoms, she said we have a new pressing concern. A brain tumor in the right lobe. I see a neurosurgeon on Aug 22. I've been doing my research and I'm looking at the Gerson Therapy, if any of you have heard of it. It's basically eating only raw organic fruits and veggies (juicing too) for the most part. I think oatmeal is permitted as well. I still either need to fly out to visit the Gerson Institute if I can or order the books onLine to study myself. The thought here is that your body detoxes and gets the RIGHT nutrients that cleans and heals itself.

Any advice.... Words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

B- juiced (kale, cucumber, lemon, ginger, green apple, and celery)
Water with chia seed and a splash of lemon
L- baked chicken, roasted carrots, potatoes and onions
                    D- not feeling like eating

I have gotten back on to diet cokes. I know I know that's the worst in the world to drink. But his cleanse, detox should help me get off them. I'm looking to start the full out juicing and raw food diet this next week when I get my new grocery budget.

                    • Gerson institute won't except me. They say because it's a brain tumor that their therapy of food can kill the tumor which causes inflammation. Inflammation means swelling... Which means seizure. *shakes head*

I'm at a loose. My husband believes in my research ability and that's the only thing holding him together. And mean while I'm faking a "I've got a game plan" confidence for him. My only game plan from the research I've done is that I'm not going through radiation. The side effects far out weight the benefits. I've quit diet sodas. I'm drinking carrot/apple juice with any other veggies I have on hand. I'm trying to eat chicken/fish/pork once only per day. And no processed meats and red meats for a while. My whole healthy me mind set is unbalanced and shaken though. I'm unsure of what I'm doing. I was so confident but feel if I keep deteriorating... What's the point to my trying to eat so healthy when I'm just going to get worse anyway. Why not enjoy the food anyway!

I got a dog... And my husband got a dog. Two puppies are a handful! Especially with a toddler. Got to do physical therapy now for my torn meniscus in my right knee. Fun fun be back later.

                        • Wow that's some lap dog! I got a English Pointer. And this makes about as much sense cause I don't bird hunt (hog and deer only) and I have free range chickens. Lol

We have about 80 layers that "free range" a 1/2 acre area that I fenced off in the middle of a 5 acre pasture. Last year the birds had free run of the whole 5 acres, but we lost half the flock to dogs/coyotees, so I fenced them in and haven't lost one since. Yup, Maggie is a lap filler, at about 150 lbs...

                            • So frustrated. So irritated. Just mad as $()&@! Why would a restaurant have their front window say Fit City Foods (which has a lot of great paleo options) but once you sit down not serve those options. I mean really why waste my time with false advertisement. I know I can order them... Online or at my gym.... Don't have to go into the diner to do that.

                              Moving on...
My last day of physical therapy. The PT is going to cut my visits short (in half)and recommend the VA hospital send me for the MRI of knee to show the torn meniscus that he suspects. Saw a so called neurologist Saturday which I thought was odd. The nurse explained that with the VA under pressure to cut down on the time a veteran waits they are bringing called into work. Wow makes me feel good. The Dr. was only interested in addressing my symptoms that were already thought to be caused by my crumbling spine. My symptoms that are related to that or aren't designated yet... Well those were totally ignored. Have no clue about my trouble swallowing since GI dr. said I don't have a hyidal hernia like I have thought and told since I was 17 or 18. Don't know why my face goes numb. Why I'm dizzy and passing out? Why I have constant headaches? Why I'm losing control of my bladder? I want and need to know for peace of mind.

What I have coming up.... August 21 neurosurgeon to discuss brain tumor and treatment options. And August 25 my regular dr. to discuss all the specialist input and look at my results from the MRI of my neck and low back. May be schedule for another nerve conductivity study to look for more nerve damage.

Researching internet for answers. How sad huh? I might know something by Christmas.
