Hubs made pulled pork for the first time this weekend. I'd found a pork leg/shank thing in the reduced section and thought we could make something of it, and that is what he chose. It is amazing and will do a couple of day's lunches - yummy!

Its now got his confidence up and he wants to try this ham in cola recipe he's seen - we all agree it sounds disgusting, but apparently its amazing. I'm a little unsure of the whole cola thing, but I'll be flexible as a one-off if he gets round to it
The Nigella one? It works, we do it at Christmas. And the cooking broth makes a FANTASTIC black bean soup (shhhh - so not primal).
I like badgers, books and booze, more or less in that order.

I have seen a recipe for venison marinated in coke. apparently it disguises the taste of a gamey stag. that is what we have dogs for ( eating the bits we don't want to ) and also I cant bring myself to buy coke as I dislike it so much so I have never tested it out.

badger I have reported your post to the primal police LOL I have never even had black bean soup. after my 20 odd years as a vege, I cant look a legume in the face without feeling nauseous.

      • Coke, you wouldn't feed it to your dog. So why would you drink or cook with it? But however, if it tastes good, let us know

Now today on the mountain the views were fantastic and this red-leaved plant was everywhere. Seas? are you there? I think it may be a mountain horopito.

If it is indeed Pseudowintera colorata then its leaves have a peppery taste and medicinal uses. Which would be good to know for sure, it's not ideal to be guessing about things like this.

        • yes that is horopito or pseudowintera colorata. It gets redder the more exposed it is. you can prick your name into a leaf with a pin apparently and the letters go red. I cook with it. I make a decoction with the leaves and use that to make chocolate horopito cake. So not primal but meh. I also make venison and horopito sausages by putting the leaves thru the mincer with the meat.

LOL would definitely never ever give coke to the dog or the kids. I'd rather drink it myself which is saying something as I truly detest it. And that it from a pure taste pov not any health or political reasons.

          • I'm so taking a pin tramping next time.

Chocolate horopito cake sounds awesome, and the venison sausages even more so. I don't have venison but perhaps I could do it with mince for peppery patties.

            Thanks for the info

            Today's food:
B - two fried eggs, two mushrooms, slice of bacon, a nectarine and half a banana (woke up HUNGRY. Then I remembered I even went to bed hungry, lol).
L - various primal snacks during the course of 4 1/2 hour tramp - two more eggs, cheese, cucumber slices, pear, nectarine, almonds and dark chocolate.
Afternoon snack after walking home in the hot sun for another hour or so - three thick slices of my slow fermented bread, thickly spread with butter. Couple more nectarines.
D - four lamb spare ribs, roast pumpkin, cauliflower and mushroom, steamed mixed veges.

Wow, that sounds like a lot of food, but I was also very active.

            • Just remembered a family story about coke. We pretty much avoid it in this house. I did not actually forbid the children to drink it but they knew I didn't like them to have it so they were very good at choosing lemonade or something else instead if we were out.

One day my 6yo found the 16yo having a drink of Coke and was utterly shocked. "Do you really think you should be having that at your age?" she said, really accusingly.

Turns out she had put it in the same category as alcohol i.e. adults only. So funny.

              • I bravely stopped in the middle of the swing bridge yesterday to capture this shot of the river below. I'm not sure why the water appeared so blue, it looked almost glacial, usually it is clear. It was so beautiful.

                • I only used venison as I had some. I am sure most meats would work. you can dry and crumble the leaves too and use on things. Google some recipes. The choc horopito cake is a adaptation of this recipe

The Cafe Chocolate Cake Recipe | Allyson Gofton

use horopito decoction instead of milk. and I often use some form of bush honey instead of golden syrup. For the flour, I just use a mix of GF flours. Approx. 1c rice : 1.5c tapioca : 1/2 c of coconut or millet. if you stick with coconut flour, you can pretend it is all primal. not sure how you could deal with the sugar as I've not tried to make it with all honey. but you get the drift. I usually do chocolate orange icing and that disposes of the primal thing.

I so am gonna take the kids for a long tramp somewhere. I need to find somewhere dog friendly that DOC haven't been out 1080ing too. I am thinking about taking them out for the roar to check out the stags roaring which would mean we would have to go away in the hills for a day or so. it is unreal if you go and watch them. definitely changed my opinions about all these men that go shoot them. so easy to shoot as they are making a loud racket and not paying attention. I could almost sneak up behind one and leap on it and stick it they are that oblivious.

Remember to uncheck the box that says something like 'reference locally'.
