  • Yes, it's late, but I'm officially now on vacation . A "staycation" of sorts, as we're sticking around home.

Got out walking for 80 min yesterday and 50 min today, so that's a good thing. Need to get back to a yoga class soon. I'm feeling a little stiff, especially around the hips/hamstrings. I'm planning to do a little sorting out on the food front over the next two weeks, still thinking things through. Lately there's so much new stuff on the forums...there's the IF and calorie counting stuff (which isn't new), the leptin reset stuff (not sure that particularly applies to me), and now the juice fast stuff...good grief, it's hard to keep up! Honestly, the more I read, the more confusing it gets. I think sticking to the basics makes more sense. Just finished rereading Robb Wolf's Paleo Solution, need to go back through PB and hit GCBC, which I never got even halfway through.

On a good note, son #1 has been given a bunch of day shifts rather than the late ones, for this week at least. This week is 4 days of 9 to 5...he's not so thrilled about getting up, but happy to be done by dinner time. Things seem to be maintaining an even keel for son #2 at the moment.

Yesterday's eats (as far as I remember):
    black coffee.
lunch of tin salmon, tin smoked oysters, cream of greens soup
dinner (not till 9pm) of 3 jumbo double yolk eggs with 5 slices of bacon. Glass of red after dinner. Cherries.

    Today's eats:
    black coffee
coconut water, tin of salmon, tin of sardines with dijon (didn't particularly enjoy them, but didn't hate them), raw cuke & green pepper with tzatziki
snack of pecans (damn things), cherries
dinner of small bison sirloin, roasted sweet potato in coconut oil with cinnamon & cayenne, sauteed mushroom/red pepper/pea pods
2 squares of chocolate. 2 rum & diet coke.

Sleep in tomorrow, yay. Since it seems I'm waiting up for son #2, think hubby is driving son #1 to work in the morning.

    • I was up very late last night, stayed up until one of the boys came home, he had a ride from another parent, but there were several others to drop off first, so later than I was expecting...then we chatted for a while when he got home while he made a huge sandwich...so in bed after 2...but a good sleep in, so 9 hours of sleep for a change. I'm planning on more of that over the next couple of weeks.

Today was urban foraging day. Hit an organic market for kombucha, walnut oil and some greek style goat yogurt to try. Then off to a middle eastern market I saw, chatted a bunch with the clerk, which was quite interesting. The owner is Persian, and gets a lot of the stuff imported. They also have local hormone and antibiotic free beef (grain fed, but better than the grocery) and local free range chicken. I bought some beef steaks, chicken breast, NZ lamb stew meat, some sort of pickled eggplant, olives, tomato paste, sheep milk feta and some soft unriped cheese called baladi, which apparently is like halloumi but less salty, so it can be grilled. Interesting place. They'll be getting in some labneh (a thick yogurt which is supposed to be amazing) on the weekend, so might have to go back. Then a stop at an asian market for baby bok choi and pork for a stir fry. All in all, good finds and a lot of fun.

      Eats:
so far some black coffee, a cup of cherries, 12 pecan halves, few slices of cold bison sirloin, a chocolate coconut lara bar.
Dinner will be beef tenderloin (maybe bacon wrapped) and a BAS.

No workout, but that will happen tomorrow. It's been a good day.

How are his podcasts? I listen to music when I walk/run...maybe I should try that instead?

I agree, there is a lot of conflicting info. And, yes, the basics seem to work the best for me too.
Although, things have slid over the past couple of weeks...time to go back to basics again. I'm halfway through Paleo Solution, I started a while ago and then forgot about it...maybe time to pick it up and finish it.

        • yes I think the conflicting info is maddening at times, but nonetheless it is informative, even if I dont know what i'm doing

And ah yes a place in the country... the fireman and I often talk about doing half a year in NZ (summer) and the other half in Europe (during their summer) I could happily go summer to summer and skip winter altogether!

          • As for the location of a place away, we're considering either somewhere south and tropical, or perhaps in southern Europe by the Med, maybe Italy or France. That's a good ways off at this point, need to get the boys through school and on their own and get rid of mortgage here. But 10 years or so from now seems doable.

Bed last night around 1230, up at 930. Probably a glass or two more wine than necessary last night. A walk with hubby for an hour. Chatted with the cruise travel agent about Christmas cruises, we've concluded it isn't in the budget for this year. Tomorrow we're going to see a regular travel agent about what we can get for a decent price somewhere warm at a resort (Caribbean) to see if that's still an option. It may not be, the bitch is the airfare over the holiday period when they jack up the rates. At this point, family holidays have be on school breaks with the boys in high school. I'm looking forward to the day when it's just the two of us for holiday that we can plan at short notice.

This evening we took in a free "ballet in the park", as the Royal Winnipeg Ballet does three nights performing each summer outdoors. Weather was beautiful, and it was great. Hubby even decided he'd be interested in seeing a performance this winter season, which is pretty cool. Thought about stopping for ice cream on the way home, decided not to but did pick up a cold bottle of pinot grigio. We had considered the idea of a booze free night for today, but alas, we both caved. The wine is cheap but lovely. Probably the same price for a bottle as we would have paid for 2 good ice creams at the Marble Slab Creamery...I think we made the better choice

            Eats:
black coffee, some coconut water before and after the walk
Dinner: stir fry of pork, broccoli, baby bok choi, onion, mushroom, carrot & pea pods, toasted sesame oil. I did use tamari, wheat free but not soy free. I always used to use cornstarch to thicken the sauce for stir fry, today I tried xanthan gum, which did a decent job of it. After dinner I did feel the effects of the sodium from the tamari, very dry mouth and thirsty. It passed.

Edit: Snack later of procuitto, chorizo, small cubes of parmesan, a few pecans & pistachios, 5 cherries, spoonful of coconut butter.
Guess I needed that after only the one meal.

            • Unfortunately, we've had to rule out a tropical holiday for this Christmas. Just too damn expensive at that peak season, and with the ages of the kids, they're basically full adult rates for everything, so double the cost of just the two of us going away. I think we'll have to plan ahead for next year.

Another 9 hours of sleep, bed at 1230, up at 930. And another lovely sunny day. We're having our friends over tomorrow for a swim and dinner, so likely steaks are in order. Still coming up with a good primal dessert. Speaking of which, hubby had a gelato today when we were out, I passed as I hadn't yet eaten, so didn't want to break a fast with crap, though I had a taste (omg, hazelnut gelato is awesome). I had to stop in the grocery for the ATM this evening, and did browse the ice cream case, but decided there was nothing appealing enough to have, and I didn't feel like going to the fancy ice cream place. Apparently once again, I'm choosing an adult beverage in place of sweet treats

              fasted until prep for dinner:
              black coffee in the am
tiny taste of hazelnut gelato mid afternoon
ate 2 small cucumbers & 3 grape tomatoes while cooking dinner
D: BBQ chicken with SOG sauce made spicy, 2 thighs and 1 drumstick, half a cup of white rice cooked in chicken broth (made for the boys, yeah right), some purple sweet potato pan fried in coconut oil like a sort of hash brown (kind of Meh...I'll buy them again but bake them next time) and some pattypan squash from the CSA box on the grill with butter & fresh thyme. A decent meal.
Having a rum & coke zero (yes, yes, bad crap) and we have a bottle of cava for later.

I also made some rooibos sun tea today, it's quite nice.

              • Busy day on Saturday getting ready for the evening. 9 hours of sleep again, yay. Quick trip to farmer's market for stuff, and some other regular groceries. Friends came over around 3, so we could enjoy the pool too, which was beautiful.

Dinner was a huge hit. Snacks of Paleobird's chicken liver pate with sliced cucumber and parmesan cheese "crackers", (everyone loved this), and lovely green olives. Salad of marinated tomato/fresh mozzarella/basil, green salad, grilled peppers & mushrooms, and fantastic tenderloin steaks grilled and topped with chimichurri sauce, which was devoured in full. Hubby made creme brulee for dessert, very primal aside from the sugar crust on top, but small servings and worth every spoonful. One NorCal margarita, lots of wine, plus shared a bottle of bubbles to celebrate our friends purchase of their retirement home in Nova Scotia, a 217 year old heritage home that's been totally updated to current standards (we'll really miss then when they move next spring, but there is a guest suite waiting for us out there...), and later a cup of "special" coffee. I did remember to drink water on and off, so after getting to bed at 230 and not up till 1130, I don't feel too bad today at all. Not perfect, but not bad.

Out for a bit to browse some shops for a cabinet for our newly painted bathroom, nada that struck my fancy. I think it's time now to put on the bikini and lounge in the sun and the pool for the afternoon. Today will be a quiet day hanging around home. And I still have 2 weeks of vacation left, hooray .

                  • A good pool lounge for the afternoon, that is until I was floating about on the foam "pool noodles" I felt something on my leg...thought it was the water lapping up as I lounged with eyes closed, then opened my eyes to see a huge grasshopper sitting on my thigh, apparently using mecce as a floatation device...not so nice! Otherwise, glorious.

                    Eats:
black coffee, cup of coconut water (electrolyte replacement for last night's wine...) later a cranberry kombucha on the deck.
5pm: 2 pepperoni sticks, few pecans
dinner: 2 1/2 beef patties, one with chimichurri & roasted red pepper, the other with pickled eggplant & veg condiment from the middle eastern market, 3 roasted jalapenos stuffed with sheep milk feta (also from the middle eastern market). 2 vodka soda with lime.
later: glass of sweet wine left from last night with a creme brulee topped with local raspberries. and eventually another pepperoni stick and (sigh) some potato chips and a rum & diet coke.

Just sitting up waiting for son #2 to get home from a movie, son #1 stayed in with a new game...most of his friends are away over this long weekend.

                    • Another 9 hour sleep (but was up kinda late, once again). Today is kind of a blah sort of day, not particularly bad, just sort of meh. Stomach is a bit off too, the only thing I can attribute it to maybe is the drinks from last night...yeah, I am on vacation, but no reason to imbibe several every night. Very hot but mostly cloudy, maybe storms on the way. Didn't spend much time outside today aside from watering stuff, quite humid too. Considered walking, but the belly didn't think that would be a good idea in the heat.

                      Eats thus far:
black coffee, cup of coconut water, 3 soft boiled eggs. Some chicken liver pate on cucumber slices (tasted better the first day...now it's all dark on top like avocado goes when open, and looks suspiciously like cat food...or mud, as son #2 described it).
bottle of kombucha, a pepperoni stick
dinner is looking like a salad with a small grass fed sirloin...hubby wants scallops, I don't feel fishy today, so I'll make both.

I like the sound of your Eastern European deli, I have one like that around the corner from my boyfriend's place. You've inspired me to head over there this afternoon. They have a wonderful selection of weird stuff I would never try otherwise, plus some seriously delicious antipasto things.
