    Well, the week hasn't quite gone as planned on this front...but we carry on.

    Today there was a BBQ/potluck thing at work for lunch. Aside from the typical grain laden crap, there was a full table of desserts, thankfully none of which looked even moderately tempting. There was pumpkin pie, but I have some tins of pure pumpkin puree in the pantry which I plan to use for a pudding of sorts in the near future. I always used to love good pie crust more than most of the fillings, but now it doesn't seem like a food to me.

    Eats:
    B: coffee with coconut milk
    S: 2 slices bacon, piece of beef jerky
    L: 2 thin burger patties (no fillers, 100% beef, according to the box) topped with salsa and boursin cheese, some broccoli/cauli salad with bacon (yay) and a likely bottled dressing, quite a few chunks of assorted cheese, some raw veg, 2 grapes and a few strawberries. Not bad, considering.
    D: wild caught (by a friend) British Columbia salmon, pan fried in olive oil with a touch of salt & pepper, topped with lemon butter & fresh dill, sauteed garlic spinach, last of the leftover roasted brussel sprouts with bacon. Wish we had been given more salmon!!

    Had contemplated a walk after work, ended up getting grouchy with the kids and took a brief nap on the sofa instead. Considering the sleep lately, perhaps that was the better choice. Getting maybe 6 hours nightly this week. I sleep fine, it's just that I have to by up before 6am for work, and don't drag my sorry ass to bed early. I love sleep! I get more when I have to be away from home for business, funny. I also managed to get in a good hour of homework tonight, too.

    • 6 hrs is ok if it is good quality sleep. But yeah you start to build up a sleep debt. try a few early nights. Tell your kids to find a new taxi

      • Where did the weekend go?

        From what I can remember:
        Friday:
        B: coffee with coconut milk
        L: coffee with cream
        D: grass fed beef tenderloin wrapped in nitrite free bacon, grilled; stir fry of veg (carrot, snow peas, mushrooms, red pepper) with chili sauce. One Danish beer, a few glasses of tempranillo. Took a photo, but can't find the cord to download.

        Saturday got out early to the farmers' market. Have to get that in while I can, as it closes for the season at the end of the month.
        B: coffee with HWC
        L: none, a few nuts for snack
        D: had guests. Pastured lamb burgers stuffed with feta/roasted red pepper/kalmata olives. Sweet potato fries with garlic aoli, caesar salad. Dessert was from the PB cookbook, the walnut meal brownies (excellent, and the kids agree) topped with coconut custard and a few assorted berries. Too many glasses of wine.

        Today I had an ER shift for the first time in a few months. Lots of moving about on my feet the whole time.
        B: coffee with HWC, 2 eggs fried in butter, few bacon crumbles (maybe one slice worth?)
        L/S: 2 coffees with cream at work
        D: crispy fried pork belly, walnut brownie. A rum & diet coke.

        This week, I relaxed a bit on over analyzing food macros, etc, and just ate according to the principles of PB. Strangely enough, even with some drinks through the week, I was down 2 lbs yesterday morning, though these are 2 of the same 4 lbs that have been coming and going over the past few months. Today, they were back, but not surprisingly, after a higher carb evening yesterday. Should be interesting to see where this week ends up.

        At least at work, I have my replacement for one of my jobs starting tomorrow, so will be handing that over, yay. We have a "management retreat" from
        Wed to Fri, not particularly looking forward to it, but might be a chance to catch up on sleep at night, if nothing else. We'll be in cabins at a lake about 2 hours away from home. Another necessary evil.

        • The 2 lbs that were gone Sat and returned yesterday are gone again today. I can certainly attribute those to the higher carb night on the weekend.

          Eats:
          B: coffee with HWC
          L: cheddar stuffed grass fed beef burger topped with avocado
          S: few cashews and almonds while prepping dinner
          D: veal meatballs in marinara sauce over "zucchetti" sauteed in evoo/butter and garlic, topped with a bit of fresh parmesan. Very nice.
          later, last of the PB walnut brownies, which I had to fight the kids for. Couple of glasses of very good pinot grigio.

          I've seen the menu for what we're eating while on the management retreat...methinks I'll need to bring some coconut oil and other supplementary foods, maybe bacon, cream and coconut milk. Then all my colleagues will really think I'm odd. Will also bring a copy of the PB book, in case anyone has questions. I've been meaning to lend it to my boss. The cooking has been divided up among the participants, and I really had to laugh...I had told the organizer that I'm not eating grains...I see that one of the meals I'm cooking is a pancake breakfast. Good grief. Well, I can cook it (boxed pancake mix), but I don't have to eat it. Sounds like a good meal for IF. One good thing is that each day we have a hike in the forest planned, so am bringing my VFFs and am looking forward to that part. The weather is supposed to be really nice for fall too.

          • I'm mostly packed for the retreat. We had to fill out a form about each of the team who is going about your thoughts (no name added) about their strengths and what to work on related to leadership, team building and communication. We will get an envelope at some point with all the responses, to be viewed only by the individual. Should be interesting, at the very least...

            Have my bag o' food stuffs ready: jerky, heavy cream, macadamia nuts & almonds, almond butter, oil packed tuna, 85% chocolate, creamed and shredded coconut, coconut oil, small tin of coconut milk. Should do fine to supplement the overly CW menu. And my own evoo/balsamic/dijon salad dressing. Decided to pass on bringing bacon. Leaving tomorrow morning and back on Friday.

            Unfortunately, hubby's work decided he's away the same days. So we are leaving the kids on their own, though we have close friends nearby to check in and be available in case of anything significant. I've spent half the evening prepping foods and stuff so they don't have to think about feeding themselves too much. A bunch of chicken drumsticks are ready in the fridge.

            Eats:
            B: coffee with cream, 2 jumbo eggs scrambled with bacon crumbles in bacon fat. Both eggs were double yolk...score!
            L: one coffee with half and half (the best I could find)
            S: some almonds and cashews while prepping dinner. Got home nearly 2 hours late due to dealing with stuff that couldn't wait until I get back.
            D: 3 chicken drumsticks, garlic broccoli with butter, spinach salad.
            While packing and prepping: 2 glasses of pinot noir.

            The place we're going is supposed to be a 'wifi hotspot', am taking my laptop (for homework, yes, of course), so might be around before the weekend. Wish me luck....lots of visioning and teambuilding activities ahead...hmmmmmm

            • ahh have fun. I always end up playing bullshit bingo at these types of things.... ie, make a list of all the "buzzwords" that your industry uses and some HR-ey type ones (think synergy and all that crap) and then just cross them off your list when they get thrown around until you can go BINGO!!

              i think you should have taken some bacon.

              Hope the house is in one piece on your return.

              • Finally back. The retreat was not too bad. Suse, too bad I didn't see your post about bullshit bingo until I was home...granted I'm not sure how well it would have gone over if I had jumped up shouting BINGO! Meals were relatively adaptable, and when the others snacked on cookies and munchie mix, I pulled out my jerky, nuts, and almond butter. Shared my coconut milk with berries, and found a few kindred spirits. We actually talked about PB a bit, most were interested, and my boss is now 3/4 through the PB book that she borrowed.

                Thanksgiving weekend was busy, as usual. Amazingly gorgeous weather for this time of year, temps in mid 20s C. Finished off most of the fall yardwork, lots of errands, some homework. I managed to get my hands on a free range fresh turkey...though it was an 18 pounder for just the 4 of us. Roasted it as per an old MDA blog post, and I must say, it was the tastiest, moistest turkey I've ever cooked. Yesterday was leftovers, today I made a version of turkey a la king, with onion, garlic, broccoli, turkey of course, stock and heavy cream, served on top of cauli rice. Very tasty and filling. The kids had theirs on rice.

                I have managed to get out walking, had 2 hikes on the retreat in the lovely fall forest, and then twice for an hour + on the weekend. My VFFs were a good conversation piece on the retreat. Yesterday I did about 15 min of a light run in the middle of the walk, which is the most I've run in the VFFs. Man, are my calves feeling it today, but it's a good sort of used up feeling. Mostly really tight, better tonight then first thing this morning.

                Some definite drama from the kids on the weekend...now I know what it's like to have your teenager escorted home by two handsome, burly, body armored police officers...some trouble, but it could have been a lot worse, and I think it scared him shitless, which is a better lesson than we could have taught on our own. Ah, kids. And the other one has decided to leave his elite soccer program, which has many implications. Yet he seems relieved with voicing his decision. I'm sort of disappointed, since it has been his focus for years, but when your 14 year old claims seriously that he's lost his love for the sport, how can we make him stay in the intense program with 20 hours per week of training, while going to a new school too?? So in the end, a rather interesting few days.

                Maybe the coming week will be less eventful??

                • Welcome back, we missed you!

                  Kids ay... and again I say, this is why I have dogs A little bit of scared shitless never hurt anyone though. Re the other, perhaps that is for the best, for you all even! Perhaps he is just tired and wants to have a bit more out of life than sport and will find his way back to it later.

                  • Yeah, the kids will be the death of me, either that or my retirement fund...

                    As for kid #2, yes, if he truly isn't happy, it's better to make the change now rather than force himself through 4 years of something that may make him bitter in the end. And yes, I can't help thinking of the other implications...a heck of a lot of time not spent running around the city to practices and games, plus a lot of dollars saved. And he'll have more time for other things he wants to do, and assures me that also will be more time spent on academics...we'll see about that one.

                    As for wine, today it's some Jamiesons instead.

                    • Decent day at work. Nearly all set for kid #2 to start at the new school next week. He spoke to coach today, who understood, as he had taken a long break from playing pro early in his career, and has left the door open if he ever wishes to try out again. The kid seems relieved and more relaxed today, which is a good sign.

                      Did a ruck march at the end of the work day in preparation for next month's fitness test. We walked 6km with rucksack at about 25 lbs. Too bad I have to wear my army boots for this! Calves were still stiff from the VFF run, and a bit more so after the march, but I'll live. Or as we like to say "suck it up, princess" (has more effect when saying that to one of the guys).

                      Eats:
                      B: IF, black coffee
                      L: IF
                      D: 19 hours of fasting. Used the last of the turkey in the fridge to make a turkey curry soup. Turkey stock, carrots, celery, broccoli stems, cabbage, rest of the cauli rice, chopped turkey, mild curry powder, fish sauce, splash of siracha, coconut milk. Very filling and yummy, a hit with the boys.

                      I haven't done a decent IF for a while, and today's was pretty easy. Would have been longer if I hadn't snacked on the last walnut brownie in the evening. Was damn good and worth every crumb.

                      Now time for homework...

                      • Continuing on the suck it up for leg stiffness. When I climbed out of bed this morning, I was hobbling like mad until I loosened up a bit in the shower.

                        Eats:
                        B: coffee, one with coconut milk, one with HWC
                        L: yesterday's turkey curry soup.
                        S: few nuts after work. Not as many as I used to grab on many days. Walnuts & raw almonds.
                        D: Fried up some bacon that needed cooking (ate one slice, saved what the kids didn't grab). Fried in the bacon fat 2 porkchops (pastured) and 2 lambchops (pastured, all grassfed) which I split with the boys, and some creamed kale. Mmmmmm.

                        Not so great on the sleep this week, or rather, sleeping well but just not going to bed early enough to get more than 5 1/2 to 6 hours. I really feel it by the end of the week when I do this too many days in a row. Once again, add sleeping more to the "to do" list.

                          Just one of the many joys of teenage boys I haven't had that particular experience, but I've had tons of others (3 boys, the youngest is 18).

                          I'm glad you supported him on this. Sports should be fun. And their choice.

                          One of our boys played hockey from age 6-14. (We were not going to be hockey parents, but he had a stick that he grabbed every time he went outside the door, and he played mini hockey in the living room. When he started to sleep with hockey gloves on, we finally caved and took him to the arena.) At 14 he quit to ride motocross for a couple of years. At 16 he decided on his own to go back to hockey. He loves it.

                          • No big excitement today, whew.

                            Winencandy, thanks for your thoughts. Younger son does seem happy with his choice, I got him all sorted out with the new school to start on Monday today. Older son is dealing with his grounding with minimal complaints. Had his parent-teacher interviews today, he's in several AP classes and an honour student...so I believe his 'walk on the dark side' is more of an expected period of teenage experimentation, rather than a path to nastiness.

                            Eats:
                            B: 3 slices bacon, 3 jumbo scrambled eggs. Coffee with HWC.
                            L: coffee with half and half (the best I could find at the time)
                            S: 7 almonds and 4 walnut halves. I counted after grabbing, just for fun.
                            D: grassfed rib steak, grilled, topped with garlic/rosemary/parsley butter, sauteed mushrooms, grilled asparagus. Big glass of red. Mmmmm.
                            Later: tart apples from friend's backyard sauteed in unsalted butter with cinnamon and a tiny splash of maple syrup, topped with a blob of Devon double cream. First time I tried this, and it's truly fabulous. Hubby and son were impressed too. Nightcap of cognac.

                            Hubby had a medical today, with great results on his bloodwork. He's been mostly primal for 6 months. He didn't get his actual numbers, but although total cholesterol is slightly up, HDL is up, LDL is lower, triglycerides lower. Convinced the doc to decrease his lipitor dose by half, doc says to give it 3 months as a trial, if numbers are worse he'll re-up the dose, but given strong family cardiac history, is unconvinced to give up the statins altogether. We'll see. I work with this doctor, and know he's pretty much CW driven. Looking forward to the next round of tests. I haven't had labwork myself this year, though all my numbers were stellar last time around when I was still all about low fat and whole grain.

                            • A noneventful weekend, which is fine by me. Saturday was up for a run to the farmers' market (only 2 more weeks left, season closes at the end of the month). Now that we're very much into fall, the produce is showing it...lots of root veggies and squashes, less for leafy and green stuffs. I picked up baby bok choi, some sort of pumpkin like squash, a small pumpkin, onions, broccoli, brussel sprouts on the whole stalk, and best find was some veal shanks so I can make osso bucco next week, and some more ground veal. Still have plenty of eggs to last till next weekend. More errands, and then by mid afternoon, I felt very tired and my stomach was a bit off for some unknown reason, so I took a long nap. Must have needed it, as I was lying down for nearly 3 hours.

                              Saturday's food:
                              B: coffee with HWC
                              L: really can't remember. A few random bites of this and that, not much. Primal, nothing noteworthy. A few macadamia nuts I think.
                              D: meatza. Mixed pork and grass fed beef crust, mozza, green pepper, tomato, mushrooms. A couple rum & diet coke. Later some pork rinds.

                              Today:
                              B: coffee with HWC, couple of macadamia nuts
                              L: slice of leftover meatza
                              D: will be a homemade caesar salad. Already cooked bacon crumbles, have the thanksgiving bird breast thawing for on top. Just sipping a small gluten free beer, not too bad.

                              I've been trying to do homework today, but it is more dry than usual...having trouble getting through the long readings. So have done laundry, made batty's blueberry butter balls, and some mayo.

                              Another trip for work coming up this week, off with the boss and a few others on Wed, fly home on Fri. Hopefully the restaurants we find (will be in a very small city) will be somewhat primal friendly.
