  • Still cold here. Actually felt warmer this morning, windchills were "only" -30. That's just sad.

Cast feels bit tight in spots, but the hand is still swollen. Tried to keep it elevated all day at work, but that gets rather tiring.

I did manage to listen to Nom Nom Paleo's paleocon presentation. Was happy to realize I do a lot of the same things.

Managed to shave my legs left handed with no mishaps. Showers need to be at night now, as it's a bit of a production bagging the cast and left handing everything. Had hubby massage my left arm, the muscles below the elbow are rather sore from the extra use.

On a slightly better note, I discovered that mascara can still be applied with thumb and index finger only, though some extra time is required.

Now how did I know that's the sort of response I'd get from you . haha.

Pretty sore this morning, but better later in the dat. Swelling seems down. Work is frustrating. Due to the soreness and swelling, I've not done any exercise yet. By after the weekend, I expect it will be a bit better, so am hoping to hit the gym in a limited fashion. Hubby is taking tomorrow off, so borrowing son #2's car again. Will likely have to do the same all next week while hubby's away. It's a dirty, nasty teenager car. But it drives well.

        • I'm very tired of being casted.

Hubby took son #1 to the airport this morning, he's off to his final aircrew selection process to determine if he's fit/suitable to train as a military pilot. Flight was delayed, and now he's on a bus in winter storm conditions (freezing rain and snow) 2 hours from Toronto. He's very excited about his week. Hubby leaves for a few days on Mon, so just 2 of us here. And I'll find out Tues if my hand needs pinning.

Left arm is at times crazy sore, like a tennis elbow sort of thing. Hugely not good. And ladytime is hinting that it will start soon. Really? Like I need this with left hand only? Ugh.

Weight is stable after 11 days of inactivity. At least that's a positive. Given the circumstances, am a bit less than enthused for vacation planning for Galveston. We leave in a week.

          • Son #1 arrived at his destination safely, and has met up with a few of the other candidates, and managed to iron his shirts after a couple of text questions home. Ha.

Had hubby's help to make 2 batches of pressure cooker bone broth yesterday, chicken/turkey. It's quite lovely. He was a bit creeped out by the chicken feet. Also gave him a kombucha 101 lesson, as I needed help bottling and putting on the new batch. He thinks the scoby is creepy too. He's still not keen on the booch taste, I know it's because it's so tart, and not sweet at all. More for me.

Tried my car, just to see how shifting gears with the cast is. I could probably manage it, but feel better about borrowing son #2's automatic this week while hubby is away. At least until after the cast change and see what I'll be working with next. Hopefully no need for surgery.

            • Managed ok with son's car again today. We'll see what happens after new xray tomorrow. Maybe surgery in the next 48 hours? Don't want to interfere with son #2's school or Wed work schedule, if so, may have to impose on work colleagues for a ride home post op. Hopefully not needed.

Son #1 says testing today for aircrew aptitude was "stupidly hard" and very mentally draining. Not surprising to me, it should be extremely challenging. Another round of testing in the morning, then debriefing after lunch on how he did. I'm hopefull he did well and hears the results he's looking for.

Think I need to be off to an early bed. Relatively so, anyway.

              • Woo hoo, son #1 was successful in the testing. Now off to Toronto tonight for advanced medical testing and anthropoimetric measurements tomorrow. Only 7/15 of his testing cohort got this far. As long as nothing totally unexpected pops up tomorrow, he'll start college in an aviation degree and pilot training in the fall. Will know for sure in a month or so. I'm rather proud of him.

Xray was good. Bone still in the right place, surgery not needed. Another cast on, same as the last. 2 weeks, then start physio for ROM and have a splint made. See surgeon next in 4 weeks. The cast still sucks, but at least it's progress. Very colourful bruising when the cast was off. Very sore repositioning in new cast after it was off for 90 min. Ouch. Didn't swear out loud, but it was close.

                • Here's how it looked 2 weeks post fracture with the cast off

                  Rather nasty, IMO

                    • Ouch! Very impressive coloring! Many years ago - 25! - I broke my wrist. I remember sitting in the surgeon's office surrounded by young boys who had fallen off their skateboards. One of them turned and said, "How did you break yours?" probably thinking I fell off my rocking chair. "I got hit by a car," was my answer. They all gasped in admiration.

You must be so proud of Son! That is so exciting, all the implications for his future. I think there should be a celebratory dinner or party!

                      • No time for celebration dinner this week. Son home tomorrow morning, hubby in evening. Son works Fri night, we leave for a week getaway Sat am. Then son leaves on guys snowboard roadtrip to BC before we get home. Celebration will have to wait until he gets confirmation, which may be a while.

Speaking of son #1, the kid who said he'd probably forget to text home while away, and to all our travel advice said "s'ok, I got this" phoned home to chat tonight. Says in the computer bases testing, he scored highest in his group. And no red flags in the medical testing today, though some parts still need to be reviewed by the specialists.

Home alone tonight, son #2 at work before I got home. Listened to 2 paleocon podcasts, and had a long one handed shower. Bedtime is looming.

                        • Everybody is home tonight. Had some good conversation with son #1 about his week. Now just a waiting game until he hears the official decision, but all looks extremely positive. We shared a beverage in celebration.

Have to pack tomorrow night. Toiletries, which usually takes me a while to sort, were done last night. Going all casual, so should be easy. Only problem is sweaters and long sleeved stuff, as the cast doesn't fit well through many things I would normally take. Perhaps that means shopping is in order.

Have been pm-ing with Pedidoc, we may be able to meet up for coffee or lunch mid week. Most excellent.

                            • Long travel day yesterday on little sleep. packing was a bit of a challenge for wardrobe, as much of what I'd usually take doesn't fit my cast through the sleeve. Making due, regardless.

The condo is nice, 4th floor with balcony view directly on the beach. Had a good beach walk this morning, maybe 3.5 miles, about an hour. Plan to repeat every morning after coffee before getting out for the day. Wandered Galveston all afternoon, then had a great seafood meal. Redfish for me, sea bass for hubby, shared oysters Rockefeller and creme brle. Hubby now having a cigar outside. Won't be such a late night today, last night was 1am! But we slept till 10. That's what this week is about. Recharge and reconnect. Often at home, we get too busy in out own stuff that we forget to do that.

tomorrow will tour some historic sites. Tuesday hopefully will meet up with Pedidoc.
