  • Home tomorrow. It's been a good week, augmenting the teaching staff for our critical care aeromedical evacuation specialist course. Mess hall food have been less than stellar, one day there was no protein option for dinner aside from one hard boiled leftover egg at the salad bar... I supplemented later with packed beef jerky and kerrygold cheddar. Ah well. Made the best of what was available. I was surprised at the amount of sugar in some food items, including beets and pulled pork. Not nice at all. I did manage to find some lovely locally made dry apple cider, which I'm not convinced is a really good thing, but it is rather nice. And a great local baco noir.

Meetings tomorrow morning, then the drive back into Toronto to the airport. I have a guest pass from hubby for the lounge, so that's cool. Home by 9pm. Weekend to launder and regroup, restock food for the boys, work on Monday, then stupid early Tues morning off to Vegas. 8 days there. Our friends arrived there today, they had a voucher for a hotel for a few days, then they'll join us in the time share place when we get in. It should be a fantastic week.

    • Ah - Vegas! Would love to see some good food pics. I'm living vicariously thru others travels as I'm still lugging around this big cam boot. Maybe we'll get away in November. Have fun, GS!

      • Home, sweet home. For a few days, anyway. The drive into TO sucked due to traffic, but the lounge pass was great to get some relaxation and a couple glasses of wine was very appreciated.

Of course, hubby seems to be all packed already for Vegas. Really, dude? And he has Monday off work too, which I don't. . I'll get to packing tomorrow. Should shop for a new pair of sandals, wasn't in the mood today.

I bottled my kombucha! The scoby has grown, and is more of a gelatinous formed mass than when I checked him last. Still small, but the brew definitely has a kombucha like character. And even a tad fizzy when pouring. I added just a bit of fresh ginger to the bottles. I can leave them out till Mon night or Tues am before we depart, so won't get a chance to try until we get home. Sipped a bit of the main batch, which is rather tasty. I put on a new gallon to brew while we're away. The house is a little cooler now, which will slow the process, but that's fine as it won't be bottled for nearly 2 weeks, miminum. Depending on how the first batch tastes, I may try adding some fruit to the next ones. I'm excited!

No new damage to my car this trip, hopefully that was a one of thing for son #2. Getting food stocked up for them, as we'll be gone a full week, they should manage just fine. And #1 is technically an "adult" now... #2 turns 17 on Monday. Hubby initially wanted to leave on Mon, but I felt we should be home for his birthday (which, coincidentally is also birthday 60 for one of friends we're vacationing with). We'll celebrate that one on Thursday with dinner at Gordon Ramsey Steak. Excellent.

It was good to have my local tasty eggs today, after the pale, bland ones at the mess hall last week. Tonight's dinner is the usual weekend fare of grilled steak, mushrooms, peppers, baked potato and a bottle of malbec. That meal never gets old! And hubby made a home brew kit of dry cider, which is ready to taste, so we'll give that a try tonight as well. Hopefully it's good. If not, it wasn't expensive, and we don't need to get it again. Of course, if it is good, that could be dangerous.

Tomorrow's plan is laundry, starting on packing, shoe shopping, and pedicure. Finally have time to start getting excited about the vacation!

Pretty much so. I don't envy your regular schedule.

Packing is mostly done. Casual dresses for the most part. No luck on the shoe shopping, it seems since I last browsed a couple weeks ago, the summer shoes are all gone and now it's all about fall shoes and boots. Guess I'll just have to shop in Vegas, heheheh.

Feeling rather heavy and bloated, thanks to TOM popping up a couple days early. Par for the course for vacation. I suppose better to start today rather than on the flight. And hopefully done and over that much sooner.

I expect a super busy work day tomorrow, hopefully I can slide out a bit early, but won't count on it. I have a lot of stuff to get rolling for the November Brazil work trip, which seems to be a go, as long as I can get my visa and such done.

Taking son #2 and girlfriend out to dinner for his birthday tomorrow. I think it's going to be sushi at their fave place. Fine by me. And there's an ice cream cake (his request) for dessert. Meh.

              • All packed, I think. Flight at 7 am, taxi at 530. But we arrive by 130, so lots of time to enjoy the day. Hubby wanted to go carry on bag only, but I decided I wanted check one in, wanted to take a few extra girly grooming things. And with the larger bag, there's plenty of room for any purchases I may have, heehee.

Son #2 was happy with his birthday stuff. A new game, contribution to his car fund, sushi dinner and DQ ice cream cake. I passed on the cake, as it was oreo. Still full from sushi, anyway. Forgot to bring my gluten free tamari, and one of the rolls had a bit of tempura in it which I should have left alone. Hubby had a good sized bit of the cake. When it comes to ice cream, he forgets about the gluten thing, silly man.

                I'm getting excited!

                      • Made it home very late 2 nights ago, a 2 hr flight delay meant back to the house around 130am. The boys survived with house intact, and even had cleaned up after themselves. Nice to see them acting almost adult like. Yesterday was laundry and restocking foodstuffs.

Back to work today, lots to catch up on. Hit the gym at lunch for the first time in about a month. 3000m row (15 min), 4 sets of 25 kettlebell swings with a 25 lb bell, 2 sets of 10 band assisted pullups. Tonight my legs feel like logs. That's good, as I plan to sign up to return to crossfit next week.

The trip was awesome. Of course, I ate a lot...nuff said regarding amazing buffets. Stuck to primal with alcohol , but made a couple of conscious deviations, interestingly with no ill effects. Had a small amount of amazing bread at Gordon Ramsey Steak restaurant, and a berry filled crepe at a buffet at the Paris hotel, plus likely a few gluten doses in sauces and such. I expected a gluten hit distress, but that didn't happen. Other desserts I had were just sugar, no gluten, like creme brulee and macaroons.

More later, I'm in need of sleep, and there's work tomorrow. Updates on the weekend, will try to get some photos ready to post.

                          • Over the weekend I wasn't in the posting mood. Got stuff done around home, including a bunch of yardwork, including pulling and cutting back plants to ready things for winter, which is coming soon, bah.

I was feeling that workout from Thursday all weekend. And just as things were feeling somewhat less DOMs-like today, I went back to do some rowing, including sprints, more kettlebell swings for 4 sets of 20, pushups, then a mile brisk walk. More log leg feeling tonight. I felt those KBs most in the hamstrings and adductor muscles. Probably a good thing.

Taking the plunge and restarting crossfit tomorrow. I'm signing up for twice a week classes, I figure I can always upgrade if I have the desire and funds, or add an additional day or two with some of the same stuff at the gym at work. I really ought to take some measurements tomorrow so I have a proper starting point to compare as the months go by. Definitely a bit spongier of late than I was some months ago. Up a couple of pounds from vacation, but not much, really, and it's starting to go. Not as quickly as I'd like, but then again, I'm not really working at it yet. Home for the next month or so, which should help get back into a routine and rhythm.

My kombucha is ready to bottle, the scoby has grown, which is awesome. Picked up some fresh cranberries, which I may smash and use to flavour. The first batch of ginger is reasonably tasty, though not particularly fizzy. Probably need to leave it out longer for the second ferment after bottling, which I didn't have time for last time. I got some plastic 500 ml bottles from the brewing store, so don't have to buy more store kombucha to have enough bottles. I must remember to pick up a narrow funnel, as bottling will be a bit of a potentially messy challenge without.

Been reading other journals, though not commenting. Trying to spend less time online, with mixed success.

I just cant help it, a small amount of AMAZING bread is totally worth it, and that's why we have the 80/20 rule.
And wine is fruit so how bad can it be!

                              • Yes, Suse, I've concluded that a tiny bit of amazing bread is well worth it, once in a blue moon. But only when it's AMAZING bread. Like next time we go back to France .

I'm now officially a crossfitter. Signed up for twice weekly for a year. So this tells me that I'm either a) dedicated; b) crazy; or c) one of the cool kids . Not sure which. Perhaps more than one. Today's first proper class kicked my ass, but in a good way. Hopefully I'll be able to raise my arms above elbow height tomorrow. I liked it.

Didn't get measurements this morning, as I got up a bit late and didn't even think about it. Perhaps tomorrow.

Kombucha still needs bottling, again likely tomorrow. Tonight's post workout was shower, 3 loads of laundry and food making.

                                Eats:

                                black coffee
lamb bone broth with added gelatin
                                oolong tea
L: roasted chicken meat with half an avocado and squeeze of lime; a banana dipped in mix of almond butter/creamed coconut/coconut oil; an apple
                                bottle of kombucha
D: browned ground lamb & beef on top of rice & leftover random roasted veg (broccoli, cauli, brussel sprouts)
                                bottle of homemade cider

Body is pretty much worn out tonight. I think after this last load of laundry is done, it's bedtime. Hubby is away for a couple of days, and both boys are at work till probably 11pm, at which time I should be snoring.
