  • So, as I start week 4 tomorrow, I have lost 14 pounds.... just under 5 pounds a week. This is getting easier day by day. I really don't "crave" anything, but I do kinda lust for a sandwich if I see people eating them.

Found out about a new way to exercise near me... we have a casino that opened near where I live, and they now have a Wednesday night oldies dance party. This same dance party has been running for many years in my area on Saturday nights, but it is 35 - 40 miles away. This one is about 8 miles away, maybe 10. So t will be cool to go dance for an hour or two, and leave by 10 PM. Basically 60's - early 80's music..... right up my alley!!!

    • Congrats on the weight loss PP. Have fun dancing - does that count as playing or working out or both? I'm a little too young to remember the 60's - in truth missed it by about 10 years but love the music from the 60's to the 80's.

Plus, and this kind of pissed me off.... they had vendors there that had NOTHING to do with food / wine.... a cell phone company was there... a cigar store, a company for back massages.
Awwww. There was a Sleep Number vendor at an Air Sho. What the heck??

        • Once again, slightly sabotaged..... I had this recipe for lemon butter chicken that called for the skin.....My wife said she would cook, and she did, but she changed it to 99% fat free chicken breasts. I even had the chicken in the fridge.

          • My hubby doesn't like the skin either and he always buys skinless boneless chicken and most of my recipes call for skin on bone in chicken!

Bonus: When I do manage to cook skin on chicken I get to eat his crispy delicious chicken skin!

                • OK, today is day 22, week 4 begins.

                  Some observations:

                  1. I have never found it easier to stay on plan than this plan. It's not like I never have urges to cheat, but they aren't common.

                  2. I should keep a food journal. I feel like I am eating less. I know I eat far less often.

                  3. I HATE the fact that my bathroom habits are no longer regular.

                  4. I wish I would find the energy that so many other say that they have found from primal eating. Mybe I am still just too fat to have much improvement.

                  5. I bought a new belt a couple months ago. I was using one of the middle holes. Now it is too big. I have to add another hole or two.

                  6. I am transitioning back into many of my 2X shirts. I can't wait til I can fit into one particular 2X shirt.

OK, so that is enough of that. So, last night I started to talk to my wife about Primal. It is true that she had no real clue about how this works, so I explained it as best as I could.OK, at that point she said that she would try it..... but quickly changed her mind when I told her that meant her morning bowl of oatmeal or granola would be out if she really wanted to follow the plan. At that point she said " I don't know if I can do that".

Later on in the evening, I offered to print her out a primal shopping list so that she could see all the things she can eat, and she declined. I told her "That's fine. If you don't want to do this, then don't, but don't change my foods." She very rarely cooks, so I don't have much to worry about, really. She might cook once a month, whereas I cook 15 -20x a month for family dinner.

I have been with my wife since 1997, and I still do not understand her. Never will apparently. She is very successful in her career, she is an awesome mom, and people just love her. The one thing she has never given to herself is a chance to be even happier by getting in shape - not a serious chance anyway. I know she hates being at her weight. I think that her whole life - since I met her - she has resigned herself to being built just like her mother.

I can't "make" her change; all I can do is hope that I make a permanent change, and she gets inspired by that.

OK, and finally, I have 10 weeks to hit my first goal..... 255 pounds by 2013. I was just under 271 pounds this morning, so I have 16 pounds to go in 10 weeks.... should be doable.

                  • My husband was leery about giving up his morning steelcut oats so we compromised. A couple times a week he ate my high protein breakfast. Then it was every other day. One day, after consuming his treasured steelcut oats he looked at me and said "this is not a very tasty breakfast." We haven't eaten them since. Maybe slowly easing your wife into it would work.

Protein and fat provide energy and satiety. One of the mornings that we had steelcut oats I headed out on my beloved RPR's. The first mile is strictly up a steep hill. What a drudge. I had some almonds with me, ate them and couldn't believe it when I got a rush of energy and enthusiasm.

I love the feeling of putting a new hole in an old belt - just recently I did a bit of a back slide and had to go back to a belt hole I had passed - not such a good feeling. Thankfully I am now going in the right direction again!

I find it interesting you have a shirt you are aiming to fit into and look good in. I also have a shirt - its still 1 size to small but it is starting to fit again - the day I can wear it and look good will be a great day for me! For me it was also a nice feeling when I could walk into a store and buy clothes that fit properly and were not the size of a sail! That really put a smile on my face!

                      Keep up the great work!

                      • PP,

My husband, like your wife, is also not totally on board with the Primal Blueprint. I can not tear him away from his cereal+fruit and 1/4 bagel in the morning, although he does now include some sort of protein (usually leftover meat from dinner). On weekends, he'll gladly eat eggs when I cook them after he's had his cereal+fruit and 1/4 bagel.

Lunch for both of us is "DIY", do-it-yourself, weekdays or weekends. I know he eats out a lot with coworkers, although he has mentioned getting an "unsandwich" with lettuce leaves instead of bread. I have managed to transition him from peanut butter crackers to nuts for daytime snacks.

Dinner we make together and it's always 100% primal. But then he has to have his ice cream (I make it homemade with coconut milk and honey or maple syrup sweetener), popcorn, red licorice, gummy bears... I can't sit with him and watch TV in the evenings because I'm either too tempted or too grossed out by his junk food!

He knows about the advantages of eating primally. When he started coming over to the primal side the beginning of the summer, he needed to lose about 20 pounds, and he's lost about 10 without trying. I don't think he'll lose much more, unless it happens very, very slowly. Being within 10 pounds of his ideal weight is fine with him, and he's healthy by all the medical measurements--blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. The only medication he takes is Coumadin (a blood thinner) because of a genetic defect that makes him very susceptible to blood clots (we had a scare with 4 days in ICU re: blood clots).

I never pushed primal blueprint on him. A couple times a week I give him 2 or 3 sentence "infomercials" about the latest I've read on MDA. I Netflix'd "Fat Head" and told him it was a documentary comedy, and he enjoyed watching it with me.

He doesn't sabotage my primal activities... and I don't really think that your wife cooking skinless chicken breasts is "sabotage". You can easily add a glob of butter to your veg to make up for the fat-free content of the chicken!

When it comes to the adults in our lives, we have to let them make their own choices, even if they're not good ones. Of course we all want our loved ones to eat and move healthy and enjoy a long life with us. If there's any chance to get your wife to be more primal, you have to accept her choices, and maybe get her to make small changes. Let her keep her oatmeal or granola, but see if you can get her to substitute part of it for some kind of protein; maybe a hard boiled egg. Does she go dancing with you? If not, that would be a good primal activity to get her involved in.

Most people are very resistant to change, so it has to be done in small increments, and as easily as possible. Keep up what you're doing, and gradually she may join you on the plan!

I wouldn't die in a ditch over the oatmeal. Our kids rebelled when we started on primal because of breakfast (we were alternating bacon/eggs and soups as the breakfast alternatives). So we caved on the breakfasts, and they eat primal at other times. Currently, our eldest is eating primal bacon and eggs, while our middle girl is a porridge fiend, and our youngest is still big on ricies. It's not the end of the world (corrupt her by convincing her to have it with cream...)

                            • So. I went to to the supermarket today to pick up chicken wings..... and I was shocked at the price! They were double the price of skin on thighs. So, I bought the thighs. I guess all the bars that serve chicken wings have driven up the cost of them. I remember when wings were almost considered "trash", and they sold for half the cost of other chicken parts.

                              • You know, I think the real issue at the moment - and it will always be an issue - is that in her job, the company brings lunch in several days a week, or they go out to lunch with clients. There is rarely a day where she prepares - and eats - a lunch from home. And they tend to go to the Italian restaurant that is 2 blocks from the office.
