  • Well, my best wishes to you whenever you read this. I have avoided reading the reports because they shake me too badly too.

You are the only person I know in Connecticut, so I immediately thought of you too. I am glad to know that you weren't touched directly. The indirect hit is bad enough.

        • Hi David,

I am so sorry for your closeness to the tragedy in Newtown. That must have been disconcerting and terrifying, I'm lucky I was farther away.
A break is a good idea. I did that too and maybe will take some more of a break. Merry Christmas, hoping your family has peaceful holidays.

          • Hi Everybody and Happy New Year!

I managed to catch the flu during the holidays. I was the only one in the house that didn't get a flu shot and suffered for it. I was essentially unconscious Christmas day and under the weather until New Year's Eve. I'm still not quite right. The good news, if there's anything "good" about the flu, is that I really haven't felt much like eating since the weekend before Christmas. So my holiday weight gain was limited.

I did plenty of drinking and the little bit of eating I did wasn't at all disciplined. So I am fasting for a couple of days until I feel genuinely hungry. Then I'll try to get back into ketosis and continue on.

I hope everybody had a good holiday!

            David

                  • Hi Folks,

Thanks for the good wishes. Things are going well in terms of dieting. However, a good friend and co-worker died suddenly yesterday morning of a heart attack. He had heart issues going way back... He'd had a heart attack right in the office ten years ago, or more. After that he had a pacemaker put in. He didn't take very good care of himself, but seemingly nothing was very wrong with him.

He was the last of the the founder's generation to still work here. All the rest of us are children or grandchildren of the founders of the business. A sad day yesterday. A few of us went to lunch to toast him, I managed to eat primally during the meal, but did have two drinks.

We move forward, some of us.

                    • Aahh, so sorry for the loss David! Well done on your eating - and we need to make space for a couple drinks or such to 'send someone on their way'. So frustrating. My BIL had a series of massive heart attacks a couple years ago and has been following the CW diet strictly since. Now his heart function has deteriorated enough that he has to get a pacemaker - and he works in computer stuff and is going to have to quit his job because of the pacemaker. So sad - he and SIL have gained a huge amount of weight since going low fat and high whole grains etc ... but they can't see that it is bad for them.

                      • Kind of a quiet day today, I am restoring am antique toy piano for a friend of mine and just putting the finishing touches onto it. It's a fun little project, perfect for a cold January afternoon. Food has been great today. A couple of eggs with some leftover steak this morning, some grass-fed, Applegate hot dogs and a half an avocado for lunch. Somewhere in there was a handful of cashews and some coffee. I'm finally feeling completely well after my bout with the flu.

It's cold here in Ct, but in a week or so, I go to New Orleans for a trade show. I am looking forward to that.

                        • Cold here in Maine! And we're buried in snow.

I tried some Niman Ranch hot dogs because the store was out of the Applegate - they aren't nearly as good. More expensive too! I hope they get the Applegate dogs back.

What is your friend going to do with the piano?

                          • He's actually going to give it to his children. His Father in law "restored" it but sorta botched it, and the legs were nearly broken off, so I rebuilt it and added a proper base so the legs would attach top an bottom, the way they do on a real upright piano. It also needed refinishing. I wanted to get it done for Christmas, but that didn't happen thanks to the Flu...

My Brother in Law lives way up in Maine, right near the Canadian Border, he said they have 3 feet of snow. Yikes! I like snow, but that's more than I need...

                            • Whew! I'm glad we don't have that much. I think it snows up in the County just about every day. I think I have just insured that we won't get much snow this winter, as I bought studded snow tires. That's okay, they work great on ice too.

                              • Yeah, he lives up in 'Aroohstah' county (I don't know how to spell the name of the place). He loves the snow so it is good for him. I like snow too, but as I get older I seem to like it less.

However, I really hate hot weather, so there is no moving South for me. CT is usually pretty mild as far as Winters go. For years I lived up in Amherst, MA and Winters were far worse there.

I have to make more of a concerted effort to get outside and get a bit of sun daily (when it is out). Feeling the Winter SAD coming on. It's always worse after the holidays. One more week then I get to go to New Orleans!
