  • Ketosis sticks? Where does one find such a thing?

Siobhan, I'm a bit jealous. I'd love to have a peek into what my body is doing.

    • Hi Siobahn, I think it was Taubes, "Why we get fat" where I read it. It was one of the first books I read and it brought me (in a sort of a circuitive path to Primal). I should re-read some of these book now that I've been Primal for awhile. At the beginning, I was somewhat lost in all of the terminology, much of which now is clear to me. I'd probably benefit from the review.

Hi Judge, I got mine from the CVS or Walgreens drugstore. I don't know what drugstores you have up in the North Country, but I would think that any large, well-stocked drugstore would have them, though you might have to ask the pharmacist. Mine are branded "ketone Care" by Nipro Diagnostics. I think they were $15.00 for 50. Pee on the stick, wait 15 seconds and compare the color with a chart on the bottle. I doubt they're as accurate as the blood test Siobahn got, but it does let you know if you are in Ketosis. During the two day fast I got up to about 80 on the scale. Normaly with my low carb diet, I'm at 15 - 40.

So, last night was the wedding, I did a self photo but didn't get much of the tux in it. The babysitter took a shot or two on SWMBO's camera, I'll upload these later.

The wedding was nice. It was on a beautiful golf course country-club in Weston, CT. When I went to rent the tux, I said to the guy, I want to look like I fit in, I don't want to look underdressed and I don't want to look garish. He picked everything out and did a great job, I fit right in. I did feel a bit like the beggar at the feast, these people were clearly the 1% or perhaps the 0.1% you read about. We know them because the mother of the groom went to college with SWMBO.

But the setting was beautiful, the rain cleared and the sun broke through the clouds during the service, which was conducted on the the grassy first tee of the course overlooking the manicured hills. Then the reception was held in the clubhouse banquet hall. It was beautiful, everything was lovely.

The food was actually great, the appetizer was seafood, with cocktails on the porch, while the bridal party took photographs at sunset, down on the course. I ate a reasonable amount, because I am trying to keep my protein around 75 gr. a day. But there were jumbo shrimp, crab legs, raw clams and oysters on the half shell. Besides a half a glass of champagne during the toast, I didn't drink at all! (a triumph).

Dinner was a buffet (I was a bit surprised by this) but the food was wonderful, lots of salads, sea bass, pot roasted beef (which was wonderful) and lots of carby side dishes, which I skipped. The only "bad" thing I ate was a crab cake with breading. Oh and dessert, a tiny slice of wedding cake with a golfball sized scoop of mango sorbet and a whipped cream floret over raspberry sauce, that went too. They later rolled out a huge dessert cart with a lifetime of carbs on it, which since we were busy dancing, we ignored.

The evening ended all too early as we had to get back for the babysitter. But it was an experience. Thanks to all for the advice, hot drinks, gum, squatting etc. I used it all and was fine. A few rumblings after the meal, but no trouble!

Today I return the tux to the rental place and resume my quiet life on my side of town.

      • That sounds like a lot of fun. Seafood, and dancing (and nothing untoward!). Good job on breaking your fast so effectively.

        • @Sabine- Thanks! It was a great time!

So I had to go return the tux and so decided to head over to Whole Foods and check them out to see if I like them any better than TJs. Boy do I ever! It was big, beautiful, the vegetables were gorgeous and the local ones were marked with the name of the farm where they were grown, the others were marked with the country of origin. The prices were high, but the quality was apparent. A big case of organic meat, some of which was grass fed. Very expensive, but at least is an option if I need something in particular.

I bought a frozen package of sockeye salmon and broiled it up when I got home, it is the most intense red I have ever seen and delicious! I cooked it Rare...yummmmm. Served over a bed of slightly sautéed baby spinach. Had that with an avocado for lunch.

It's a solid half hour (with traffic) to get to WFs, but I'll try to get there as often as I'm over that way or when I have time. In some bodies journal (maybe Siobahn's) I read about Tiki Masala sauce, I tried some at TJs and loved it, now I bought two of a different brand at WFs. I also got some Kippers and sardines, which I like for breakfast.

So all in all it's been a great morning!

          • All in all a great weekend! I have found, not surprisingly, that the more upscale the establishment, the more likely I am to find primal food. Which is really sad. Alas.

Taubes's book was instrumental for me when I first went primal - he validated a lot of thoughts I had, and explained quite a few things I had always wondered about. I read it, got to the end, and turned back to the first page for another reading. But I am in the mood to read it again.

            • It does sound like your weekend went very well. That microscopic bit of cheating is nothing to worry about. Celebrations are celebrations, after all. We are supposed to indulge a wee bit. It's the indulging on a massive, habitual scale that messes us up.

              Your dinner sounds wonderful.

              • Hi Judg- it was a nice indulgence, yesterday was a bit of one as well, nothing bad, primal-wise, just a lot of food. It's funny, but I'm always (well at least the three times) hungrier the day after I break the fast.

We went to the outlaws for dinner, as soon as I got there I was ushered into the cellar because they were getting a new washer and drier and found that the old washer leaked and there was a good bit of rot behind in the wall. So instead of a pleasant day of watching football and avoiding snacks, liquor and carb-stuffed dinner food, I spent the afternoon doing light carpentry, a little plumbing and a bit of electrical work. Sigh. Dinner was a roasted chicken, mashed potatoes and a curiously pale salad (they love iceberg lettuce). They also love putting dried cranberries in the salad, they are quite sugary and I pick out as many as I can without being obvious. I did eat a small spoonful of taters, I'd be fibbing if I said I didn't enjoy them and I ate the chicken like it was my job. No liquor again, none was offered and I sought none out.

I'm sore in odd spots where I was crouching, crawling or on a ladder, I had worn my minimally supportive moccasins (I tried to get the vibram five fingers but they wont fit me, big wide feet, nearly flat with a very high instep).

I really didn't mind the work and I'm not at all a fan of organized sports so missing the Jets lose was no great loss to me.

All in all, not a bad day. I've put on two and a half pounds since the end of fast low, I weigh in Wednesday.

                • Long day at work, busy, busy, busy...

                  Food was good today:

B- 2 egg omelet, cooked in butter, with a bunch of cherry tomatoes from the garden.
L- Full tin of Sardine fillets in Olive Oil, 2 cups raw spinach, 1/2 avocado.
                  S- 1 oz macadamia nuts
D- 2 Applegate hot dogs, sliced over a big salad

I might have something else once SWMBO and Boy come home from Soccer Practice. I'm not all that hungry, But my calorie and protein levels are low for the day.

I'm in moderate ketosis according to my little pee sticks. :-)

Oh I'm also taking a spoonful of Cod liver oil every day.

                  • I slept really well last night. Boy has been having bad dreams and has been coming in with us in the middle of the night. It's gotten better this past week (maybe a transition back to school...). I sort of miss him. He and I are big cuddlers, SWMBO- not so much. But he does move around a lot and I guess it disturbs my sleep. Anyway, he stayed in his room all night long and I slept really well.

Update: I did eat more last night, I made myself a couple over easy eggs on top of a bed of lightly sauteed mixed greens. I downloaded the FitDay app and yesterday's totals are as follows:

                    Calories: 1702
                    Fat: 151.1 g
                    Protein: 68.9 g
                    Carb: 25.6 g

So not a bad day, a little light on total calories, (I try to stay around 2000) but macros are in line.

I'm down a half a pound this AM.

                    • Off to lunch soon (I am hungry today). First I do my walk, its a bit overcast today. It threatens rain, but lets hope it is just threats. I have been out walking and been caught in a downpour. I got wet. I dried. It was okay.

Breakfast was a 2-egg omelet with some pesto sauce and coffee.

Lunch will be kippered herring, some salad with avocado.

SWMBO is doing a dinner program tonight, so Boy and I are on our own. He wants pizza. I might make him one and I'm in the mood for steak and broccoli!

                      • Hey DC,
Just found your blog today. Seems we have some things in common so I thought I'd read your blog and follow along. Sounds like you are doing really well and the weight is dropping off....good for you.

I noticed you said this in one of your early posts

" I read in the Sunday links post by Mark about how 8- second long sprints repeated over a twenty minute span increased fat burning according to a recent study, so periodically I'd sprint for 8-10 seconds.
These left me pleasantly breathless and sweaty, but conscious of being overweight and not in good physical condition I gave myself plenty of recovery time (I counted 125 steps between sprints). I stopped at 8 sprints. I'll do it again in a week or so."

I think I'll give this a shot tomorrow after my workout, I had been wondering just how long I should be sprinting, this might just work.
I'm in Ohio, just thought I'd let you know that rain is definitely heading your way

                          • Hi Jeffreybear,

I think I got those numbers off of one of Marks blog posts. The jist of the article was that even short bursts of full out sprinting were worthwhile. I eventually got up to 25 seconds 10 seconds to get fully up to speed, full out for 10 seconds and then 5 to wind down. Followed by two minutes of walking.

Trouble was that since I was still in the 260s at the time it hurt my ankles and knees, so I stopped. I sort of arbitrarily picked 225 as the weight where I would resume. I'm getting there! Mostly I'm just walking now and beginning to do some bodyweight conditioning (squats, pushups and planks).

Thanks for stopping by! It just started raining here about ten minutes ago, well I got my lunchtime walk in!

                              • Today was weigh-in. I am 237.7 so I have lost 3.0 pounds this week! :-). I checked my (paper) journal and last New Years Day I weighed 292! Over 50lbs gone, or roughly Boy's weight. I added the starting number to my signature block. Huzzah!

I think tomorrow I will begin another 48 hour fast. I'm not traveling this week and we have no dinner commitments. Today I will eat normally, maybe even a bit heavier. I liked starting the fast after breakfast like I did last week, so will do that again. So my last meal will be Thursday Breakfast and my next meal will be Saturday morning. We are going to a tailgating party and a Yale football game, Saturday, but it should be alright.
