  • Hi Siobahn, I had sort of expected the place to be bigger. There used to be a chain called Bread and Circus, i think they were out of Boston. I used to go to the one in Hadley, Mass. When I lived in Amherst. It was the size of a supermarket. Whole foods bought them out.

I think I expected to find that type of place. The TJs in Orange is not much bigger than the little health food store here in town. There is a Whole foods in Milford, I'll try there next. Maybe they have more local stuff.

Of course, soon enough there won't be anything local except turnips, onions, and Hubbard squash...sigh! Fortunately I like it all.

    • I forgot to mention, SWMBO and I were invited to a Black Tie Formal Wedding and Reception at a fancy Country Club in Westport. So I had to get fitted for a tuxedo. At first I had a mind to rebel against the ostentatiousness of such things by getting a powder blue tux with brown velvet appointments and a frilly shirt and platform patent leather boots just like my junior prom tux in 1977. But in the end I went for a basic black dinner jacket, black pants, matching vest, white (non-ruffled shirt) and normal tie.

It was nice that I am now in normal male sizes and could try on the "test jackets" and they didn't have to scare up one from the "portly" section. The regular extra-large dropped right on! :-)

I will likely take some pictures and will post one. This will be the third time I've worn a tux, not counting shows I acted in where I wore them as a costume.

I'm actually really looking forward to stepping out!

      • Yes! Nice to see a man rejoicing about clothes. Looking forward to the pictures.

I do know what you mean about the rebellion though. I deliberately wore a pair of slightly dated platform shoes to a family do recently, in large part because the hostess had found them too young for me when I initially bought them a decade ago, LOL! Hubby wanted me to wear my strappy sandals, but it was a good thing I didn't: the heels would have sunk right into the grass (it was a fancy BBQ party, with long tables strung together on the lawn) and I wouldn't have been able to kick them off easily which I could with the platforms. But that was the extent of my rebellion. Other than that I was quite proper.

          • Yeah, its just a rental. So all told, including socks and shoes it came to just over $100.00 (little American Dollars). I did buy the insurance incase of spills and damage. I remember going to a wedding years ago on a rainy Saturday, my best friend was in the wedding party and a tackle football game broke out in the yard behind the church hall. It was the wedding party against the wedding guests. It was full contact and it was easy to tell the teams apart because the wedding party was all in the same light grey tuxedos. That is, until about the middle of the second quarter when we were all the same brown muddy color...

The wedding guests lost...my $75 Sears & Roebucks wash-n wear suit was stained beyond reuse, the victorius team paid a lot of fees and penealties to the rental place.

            Beer was involved.

I do not expect this wedding to be so much fun...

            • Update

Today is my weigh-in day and I stepped on the scale and it read 240.7! That is 5.8 lbs!! A lot of weight to lose.

There are a couple of factors. I did a 48-hour fast (a week ago-Wednesday and Thursday). My last weigh-in was last Tuesday, because I was away the rest of that week. So this weigh-in represented more than a week. I have tried to stay in Ketosis by keeping Carbs under 50 grams. I have tried to keep my Protein under 75 grams (this after reading Primal Body, Primal Mind). Finally in order to keep my calories at around 2000/day I have been eating fat, which on any given day makes up to 75% of my calories.

I feel great, not run down. While I haven't fully embraced the Primal exercise regimen, I am walking daily anywhere from 2 - 4 miles, full of energy.

I am happy with the results, and won't make any changes, but was surprised with the amount of loss. I know, I know, I complain when I lose too little, I complain when I lose too much! Does Nothing make this guy happy!!

              I'm happy!

Update, just for shitzengiggles, after talking about exercise, I decided to do some push-ups. Early on in my PB journey I tried some, and some planking, per Mark's suggestions, but they were so damned uncomfortable. If I got to 10 pushups it was remarkable, and it hurt. Just now I banged out 30!! I believe that is a lifetime record!

And this is without doing any upper body conditioning at all! Of course I am 20 or 30 pounds lighter than I was the last time I tried them. But the change in my strength is remarkable. I wonder if just eating well can affect muscle strength in the absence of conditioning exercise? So it would seem.

                  • Thanks all! I do feel like I've turned a corner. It's funny, I was in the 250s for over two months, losing a pound or less each week, then inexplicably gaining some. But I've lost the last 9.3 lbs in two weeks? Go figure.

                    But...

I got some Ketosis sticks at the pharmacy and it showed that I was in Ketosis. So maybe I have transitioned into being a fat-burner. I believe the fasting might've pushed me into the transition.

The first fast was the result of personal turmoil, the second was borne of opportunity, by myself in a strange city, no good restaurants nearby. This next one will be purely intentional. I'll stop eating after lunch tomorrow and will not break the fast until Saturday evening (the fancy wedding). This might be the hardest one, given that I'll be in my normal environment and not sequestered in a hotel room far away.

I need to get moving - not more- just at all. I've really turned into a slug. So your walk descriptions have inspired me. Keep up the good work and journaling.

                        • Thanks Sabine and Pedidoc!

Well the best laid plans... I packed up a really nice, substantial lunch to eat before my 48 hour fast begins. Then I promptly forgot it... D'oh! In reading Primal Body, Primal Mind I enjoyed the part where they said that clean eating will help memory. I hope that happens soon! So I guess my fast has begun. No food until Saturday evening.

                          TMI warning follows!

I do have one slight concern. Both times after the meal that broke the fast I had pretty intense diarrhea. It was minutes after eating, so could not possibly have been the food I had eaten to break the fast running through me. There was no cramping or discomfort, but it lasted all evening and was cleared up by the next morning. Now, since my next scheduled meal is the wedding reception dinner, all decked out in my tux, I am somewhat concerned. I suppose my planning could've been better, but I'm going to try not to worry about it. Sigh...

                          End of TMI Warning.

                          • There is a mechanism by which just chewing food can send a signal to your intestines that new stuff is coming in, so they better clear out the old.

You might consider giving yourself an enema the night before if you are really concerned. (Can't believe I suggested that! ) Or maybe an epsom salt bath and some squatting on/over the toilet to encourage anything that's still in you to come out at a time of your choosing.

                            • Yeah I was wondering about that. During the fast there wasn't much...activity there. But it was clearly triggered by eating. I suppose given my 'druthers, I'd skip that meal too, and if it's a buffet and I can do so without drawing attention, I just might. But if I had to guess (based on Bar and Bat Mitzvahs attended in the past) the dinner will be several courses, beautifully presented and served at table, and very posh.

Well, it's likely to be an adventure, for one reason or another!
