    Week 3 - Week in Review

    Nutrition: Aside from still struggling to incorporate vegetables, my meals are becoming a blur. I look back at the pictures and think... "ohhh, that looks good. Now when did I eat that?" Which I actually take as a positive sign, because me eating well and primally is not something noteworthy, but rather turning into an everyday thing. Still just focused on sticking to primal foods and not messing with calories or macronutrients. It's frustrating honestly because I'm analytically inclined, but aside from Day 15, when I got paranoid that I was WAY off base, I'm holding to that until after the first month.

    Fitness: Still lots of walking and had a great time playing beach volleyball on Day 16. I'm already finding I want to be more active recreationally (specifically in a social context, which is new). Couple buddies asked me to hang out next week, I said yes, but that we have to do something active...suggested tennis to one and ultimate to the other.

    Overall, I'm feeling well, but also know once I get the sleep situation under control, I'll be feeling even better. Honestly, I'm trying not to be bummed that I really don't see any change in my body or fit of my clothes. But, while weight loss would be great, it's not my specific goal for the first month. Eating primal and develop habit of activity is. So, I just keep telling myself, it's a long process and I'll go into fat burner beast mode soon enough.     Best part of the week: Beach volleyball, (re)discovering Pork Rinds and attempting Judg Fudg.

    Worst part of the week: Me continuing to be utterly lame about sleep and vitamins.

    Main goal for next week: EXERCISE ROUTINE // So after two weeks of sleep as my goal, it's just time to (unsuccessfully) move on. This week, it's to set-up a bodyweight exercise routine (probably from You Are Your Own Gym) and do it two days. // Sidegoal - Buy a new scale to start weighing myself starting in Week 5.

        Hang in there. I totally suck at the the sleep thing. Have you noticed the time on this post?? This is normal for me. I think I will have to start a month-long project titled "Go the F*** to Sleep!".

        Which, by the way, is the exact title of a book written by Adam Mansbach that is currently making a huge splash with parents of young kids... if you get it in audiobook, Samuel L. Jackson will read it to you...

        Oh god, I could never own a scale, but you know what you need. You are a much braver, and self-admittedly, more analytical than I. My "weight" I am measuring by the notches on my sturdy leather belt - which means that weight doesn't mean as much to me as inches lost around the pudge, and for that my belt serves nicely.

        I started Primal as an experiment from May 1 to June 16 to lose a bit for a high school reunion. A week before the reunion, I announced to the family that I would extend this experiment to Labor Day because I liked what I was experiencing. So, at least until then, I will be checking here to read your journal.

        As an aside - since you said you are analytical - do you perhaps have studies / work in any of the sciences? My hubby is a big numbers guy and he was a chem major - currently doing computer programming for an environmental consulting company. I call him the Excel King. This is the same dude who, a few years back, tried to do a cost-benefit analysis on our bitty home garden because he felt I was spending too much on gardening seeds / stuff and not getting enough produce to show for it.

          Sleep is such a challenge for me. I can lie awake for hours, even when I'm not stressing about things. Even as a child, I thought it was normal to take 30-60 minutes to fall asleep.

          Summoora, good info about peas. Thanks. I don't plan on making them a staple, because I've never been able to stomach them unless they're only cooked very lightly, but it's nice to know I don't have to flee in terror.

            Day 23 - 23.Jun.12

            So after a few days of doing better with veggies, Day 23 was almost devoid. Also my body was not at all pleased, whether from lack of veggies, the HFCS in the ketchup, or perhaps the Gouda. Worst IBS issues since starting Primal. Need to find sugar free or at least non-HFCS ketchup. Though on the plus side, I'm back to eating strawberries (in moderation) without much itchiness.

              Day 24 - 24.Jun.12

              Probably my lamest food day yet. It was a long exhausting day and I wasn't terribly hungry. I need veggies!

              Well, no food pic today. But here's a pic of a parade crowd (over half million people) that I spent 3 hrs navigating through, thanks to a friend who I hadn't seen in months not wanting to go by himself. It was almost like a HIIT obstacle course. Speed up, slow down, break right, don't trip on rubbish, repeat and all the jostling about probably helped my stabilizer muscles.

                Meatloaf muffins, haven't made those in ages!

                Have you ever thought of making your own ketchup? There must be a way to primalize it. A good thick tomato sauce with lots of veggies, pureed in the blender... Perhaps a little tomato paste for an extra tomato punch. Freeze in small containers to prevent a big batch from going bad without all the extra preservatives. What do you think?

                Quick and easy veggies: sliced tomato, cucumber (or cut the two in chunks, add oil and vinegar for a quick and easy salad), sticks of sweet peppers, celery, carrot, broccoli or kale stems, raw broccoli or cauliflower florets, all of which can be dipped in a guacamole sauce or sour cream or Greek yogurt... When I get my act together, I prepare a lot of salad greens (wrap in a damp paper towel or tea towel inside a plastic bag or big bowl to keep fresh much, much longer) so I can make almost instant salads.

                If you're cooking in the oven, roast veggies can be really easy too. Tossed in seasonings and melted butter or olive oil... yum!

                Of course, there's always the old standby of zapping frozen veggies, but fresh is so much nicer.

                  Day 25 - 25.Jun.12

                  Very late night and very early morning. Only 5.5 hours of sleep, but managed to push through and even get a good bit of exercise in. Was super-excited to play tennis for the first time in 15+ years and it was a lot of fun. Also, totally kicked my butt. It felt like we had been playing for about 1.5 hr and it was only 45 minutes! Trying to convince my buddy to make it a weekly thing.

                    Day 26 - 26.Jun.12

                    It's 3.5 weeks in and even though I feel better, physically and mentally, haven't noticed any actual fat loss. Caught my reflection in a window last night and wow... sometimes I forget how big I am. Kind of ready for this week to be over so it can be month two and time to play with macronutrients, IF and turning myself into a fat burning beast. Also thinking about starting a blog in month two.

                      Maybe Ecks can chime in here, but I've heard that some people don't start losing weight right away. I only lost two pounds the first month myself, but seeing as weight loss was not my goal, that was okay. I mean, I do want to lose weight still, but that's not what I came to PB for. Feeling better definitely has to count for something...

                      And also, when you have a lot of weight to lose, you have to lose more for it to show. I know I had to drop a good 15 pounds or more before I really saw a difference. And I rather doubt that many other people saw it at that point. I just figured each pound was one more not weighing on my joints and one step closer to better health, and therefore worth the effort for its own sake, whether or not anybody could see it, including me.

                      But it was still a really nice feeling when I curled up in bed one night and discovered there were bones in my shoulder! Had forgotten about those...

                        Thanks for the pep talk. I'm not discouraged, but it would have just been nice, ya know. While weight loss is one of my overall goals, it wasn't my first month goal, transitioning to primal eating and developing a habit of activity are, which are both going great. So I'm cool with where things are at. Just with the end of month one approaching, I'm getting a bit anxious for the next phase.

                            Hi DashFire!

                            The pic of the Chicago skyline is nice. I have been there only once - a long time ago when my HS marching band went to Regionals. We took a boat ride on the lake, went up to the top of the Sears Tower (a day that Walter Payton was to play - I think he broke the career rushing record that day... all the guys in the band were trying to stall and stay in the tower to use the scopes...), went to a fancy downtown shopping center and got a Chicago deli lunch. Fun!

                            I miss NJ for that - the deli culture. And how brash the Garden Staters are. Sigh. Nowadays I will have to wrap my deli sandwiches in lettuce leaves, but hey, I like that.

                            My girls (the four daughters) have never known me as the thin chick I always was until postpartum depression and the mind-altering drugs changed the physical me after the last one. It feels like I am now peeling off soggy old layers of clothing, like you used to have to dress before snowsuits became the thing. Looking in the mirror is a crap shoot - sometimes I think I see improvement, and other times all I see is how far I have yet to go. Depends on my mood.

                            But I am in this for so much more than simple LNG (although that, too, is on the list). It'll all get there!

                            Keep posting... I will miss you if you don't.

                              So this is an interesting turn of events. Bought my scale today in anticipation of doing weigh-ins starting next week. My Pre-Primal weigh-in was on my parent's brand new bathroom scale, which maxed at 330 and the needle zoomed right past that, so I estimated 340. Which was pretty much in line with where I have been (335-340).

                              Then this afternoon, I get out of the shower and weigh myself on my new digital scale - 319.8. WHAT? I really don't believe it's possible that I lost 20lb of water/fat and there is no change in my appearance. I'm guessing the analogs probably aren't very accurate close to their max. Maybe I was only 335 or 330. So while I'm still skeptical that I actually lost anything close to 20#, it's clear I've lost at least a few. So that's encouraging. Not counting this as my "official" current weight though. That will happen on July 1. But, it's a promising start. Now curious to see what happens with week to week progress.

                                Day 27 - 27.Jun.12

                                Whoa doggy - the BBQ I made was spicy. The sauce is basically vinegar, 4 kinds of ground pepper, a touch of brown sugar and mustard powder. It was a batch of sauce from about 9 months ago, so it had plenty of time to strengthen to insane intensity. I ate it, but thought - this is going to go really badly for me. My IBS flared up, but it wasn't nearly as bad as even just eating the normal hotness BBQ pre-primal. I think my gut is starting to handle hot foods a lot better, which is something I've ALWAYS stayed away from except for this BBQ. So that could open up a whole new world of food possibilities.
