    • looking good! your abs look pretty phenomenal as well. like Misabi, i am interested to know how the keto is effecting your lifting? much as i hate having to have loads of carbs, some of my best gains have been after hummingbird attacks the night prior. also, typically what would you do in a gym session liftwise? we were discussing power lifting and training methods at the gym yesterday which is why i ask.

How're you finding your lifting is going now you're in keto? Any changes to performance?
Very inconsistent strength-wise I've noticed. Some days I can barely be bothered lifting anything (but I'm happy to do some cardio) and other days I'm king of the world.

I got a 100kg squat PR the other night!!

I'm confused, I don't have abs?? Was that message for this thread?

I centre all of my sessions around one of the big lifts, sometimes more than one. Squat day, dead day, bench day. Then I'll do accessory stuff. For squat day I'd also do stiff-legged deads, leg press, and maybe glute bridges. On dead day I'd do some lat pulldowns and maybe some rows. On bench day I'd do push-ups and maybe some flyes or dumbbell work.

I like to mix it up so I throw random things in all the time.

For cardio I do HIIT on the elliptical or just low heart rate cycling. Walking about 4 hours a week. Also been doing some barbell complexes which are super fun.

LOL you have abs. what i meant was your core looks pretty good too in that pic. i know you didnt mention it but i thought i would say as you have such a good waist line too.

Also been doing some barbell complexes which are super fun.
i am really into the dumbbell ones. i also like to mix it up as i get bored easily and i find i still progress strenghtwise if i keep mixing it. very into one legged or one armed everything right now which is super hard.

Ohhh I see. Well usually when people refer to abs they're referring to visible ones!

I don't even know how good my core is. It's obviously improved but I can't really tell how developed the muscles are, I'm not very in tune with it.

Yeah important to not get bored I reckon!

haha the joys of internet communication! i call that a muffin top not abs. by abs i mean the nice ones. i dont ever specifically exercise my core other than i do roman chair ab circles which got me side obliques. with all the squatting and deadlifting and everything else you do, your core will be stabilising so you will probably find it is very strong without you realising it.

If you think you are over-exercising, you likely are. I am taking a deload this week because I could just tell it was time. I was less excitied about going to the gym, I was starting to get achy in some spots, etc. Mark says it better than me, in case you missed this one: The Deload Week: What It Is, How to Do it, and Why It Might Help You Get Stronger | Mark's Daily Apple

Also, you might still be getting keto-adapted. Have you checked out Peter Attia's site: The Eating Academy | Peter Attia, M.D. The Eating Academy | Peter Attia, M.D. ? He seems to have a ton of good info regarding performance in ketosis especially.

Keep rockin' those lifts. You are super-strong!

I have done deload weeks before, and maybe you're right that it's time for another one.... I just love the gym though. I don't know how I'll spend all of my time!

Yes I love Peter Attia! For his brain and body knowwhatimsayin

I knocked myself out of keto accidentally on Wednesday via sundried tomatoes lol. I entered them into my macro app wrong. And last night I had dessert with friends, but that was always planned so I'm not worried. I did fasted cardio this morning and had my first bulletproof coffee to throw me back in quickly.

A friend of mine who is a doctor (well, will be in 2 more months) also doing primal keto has a blood meter and is experimenting with various things to see what affect it has so it's very interesting for me to watch that. She's found diet soda knocks her out. Bulletproof coffee is a massive ketone spike. As is fasted cardio.

I might buy myself a blood meter at some point if I keep up with keto, which i imagine I will, i'm loving it!

                      • Enjoying reading this thread immensely and nixxy, your progress is AMAZING. You are inspiring! But now I read this last bit and am somewhat shocked - diet soda can knock a person out of keto????? Is your friend sure it was that and not some hidden carb?

Depending on how deep in keto you are and need to be, some artificial sweeteners can be enough to knock you out of keto. Is been a long time since I read it, but I'm pretty sure that the John's Hopkins nurses guide to keto for epilepsy even warns people using that toothpaste can be enough to do the same. Obviously more of a concern for an epileptic person.

Yeah it's reasonably well documented that some sweeteners drive an insulin spike which knocks you out! I think it varies a lot person to person.

                            • Can't believe how well keto is working for me...

I mean, I shouldn't really be surprised. If we look at my weight loss, it goes something like this...

First 40lb, in about 3months - very low carb (<25), moderate fat, moderate protein. Calories too low, not sustainable method but fast results
Next 20lb, in about 10months - moderate carb (50-100), moderate fat, high protein. I gained a lot of strength in this time but it was too slow. Way too slow.
Latest 15lb, 1month - very low carb (<25), high fat, moderate protein.

The trick really is in the low carb for me. The moderate carb was fine for maintaining and slow losses but the effort in wasn't proportionate to the results out (but I gained muscle and learnt a lot and had a lot of fun with training and I don't regret any of that) but realistically, I'm still overweight and still need to lose a lot more fat.

I'm having crazy results and feel like I look so different. It's strange. I forgot what progress feels like.

I had the weirdest conversation with my gym owner the other day about how "tight" I'm looking. Oh god.

Everyone's commenting on my face - my cheekbones are suddenly all every where (in a good way).

And besides all of that, I do feel great. I've still been socialising, in fact yesterday I went out for lunch and had lamb, and chicken & jellyfish salad, and prawns... and I've had desserts and things too, obviously knocking me out out of keto, but I've found the quickest way to get back in is to wake up, do some fasted cardio, and have a bulletproof coffee. It's like BOOM.
But yes I feel great. Positive. More energy. In my first week of keto I was having trouble sleeping which is HILARIOUS for me as a chronic oversleeper. For 8 years now at least I've slept far more than normal... 12-14 hours is my "natural" sleep cycle. So I obviously can't afford to sleep that much and force myself to do 10 hours and I fight the alarm every day.... suddenly on keto and I CANT SLEEP. It was hilarious. But it only happened for 2 nights during the first week. i'm ok now... back to normal but not oversleeping quite as bad. I feel more energised during the day and dont crash.

                              Oh keto I love you.
