  • True enough, but you're hardly fat at that weight.

    I have been told that "older people" look better with more weight, mind you. At least they meant "more than when they were young" and not "more than you have now".

    The comments are well intentioned, yes. I'm not ticked off, just a little uncomfortable sometimes.

    • I have found that for me, and I am sure I am not so different from others, losing weight can lead to a temporary gauntness in the face and neck, although it seems to go away after awhile. Maybe the weight redistributes, or the skin tightens. I don't look gaunt, but my face and neck are certainly thinner. They needed to be thinner!

        • I like the toilet roll analogy. If I were handy with posting pictures, that's one I'd like to document: twenty squares off different rolls of toilet paper.

          Sometimes I think the remarks really AREN'T that well intentioned. You know the story about monkeys dragging other monkeys down. One of the sad things about humans is our desire to drag others down, whether it is by getting them fat again, or just giving a little dig so they don't feel so good about themselves. Often done unconsciously, maybe, but no less a sad commentary on the human condition. But by being aware of it, we can at least try to rise above it in ourselves.

          And then, of course, sometimes it is just that they haven't adjusted to our new reality. You may really look super skinny to her, until she replaces the old image of you with the new in her brain, so she's not so surprised every time she sees you.

          Also, isn't it funny that someone will offer you a cookie, 'to put weight on you', but probably at another time insist that 'just one won't hurt you'?

          • My grandmother used to scold me for getting fat, then offer me her homemade pastries. "It's only once a week..."

            Siobhan, I like the idea of any gauntness being temporary. I've been enjoying having a thinner face for sure. I don't think I've reached gaunt, although new lines have appeared. I actually rather like most of them. My neck has gotten a little droopy, which I'm not too crazy about, but seeing as it used to be a double chin, I'll take droopy. If it chooses to tighten over the next few months, I will definitely approve. The double chin is more or less genetic though, and will still appear in certain positions. I can live with that.

            LOL@Pam. I think looking healthy is the key. We can be pretty darn thin, but if our skin glows and our eyes sparkle, I don't think anybody will think "gaunt" when they see us. And I think losing slowly more or less prevents the problems.

            Sabine, yes, some people aren't well-intentioned. And I have found that no matter what I do or am, somebody will disapprove. So I try to win the approval of people who are wise, benevolent, well-informed. If the idiots and malicious and clueless are disapproving, I am probably doing something right. I have to be convinced in my own mind, for the right reasons. Having said that, I have little respect for people who deliberately provoke, for no better reason than punching people's buttons. There is no harm in taking other people's tastes and wishes into consideration, if it doesn't mean compromising on something more important.

            Still fasting today, although I will eat later in the day. My scale jumped more than I expected the last couple of days. It's not a totally reliable scale, and does tend to flatter by a couple of pounds, but still. I suspect that I am getting fairly accurate readings right now. So I will be careful for a bit. There have been a few too many starches in the last few days (white rice, garlic potatoes) so I will especially be avoiding those. Meat and veggies, here I come! The thought makes me happy.

            • I'm fasting too. Unless a cup of homemade broth counts as real food. In that case, I fasted 15 hours. 20 if you don't count the golf ball sized peice of meatloaf I ate at 9 pm. Is fasting NOTHING but water? any calories at all technically break a fast I suppose huh?

              okay....... I'm going to ask.............. is there some significance to your user name? Judg? I can't help but think you're name is Judy --- ya know - like the courtroom show Judge Judy. I couldn't get creative enough to come up with a fake name. I just went with the real thing. Tomi.

              • Yeah, having a wee bit of meat is breaking a fast. Or at least chipping it...

                Judg is based on my initials, and is a name I've been using online for probably a good 15 years. I'm nowhere near as tough as Judge Judy. And no, it's not Judy.

                I didn't eat until suppertime yesterday. I had been planning on fasting, but I ended up at MIL's, a little later than planned, and they were eating. I just had some lamb, then cooked up some green beans in a tomato sauce when I got home, and topped it off with a bit of Judg Fudge. There was a fair bit of walking involved too, almost an hour's worth, although broken up into two parts, so the weight was back down again. But my body kind of rebelled against going so long again today, so I had leftover squash, meat (lamb and meat balls) with a wee bit of tomato sauce, and green peas. They were all leftover, so it was a pile it in the bowl and reheat kind of meal. I add a bit of butter on the squash for the fat content. And finished off with 2 squares of 90% chocolate.

                I couldn't fall asleep last night, which perplexed me. I had had exercise and fresh air and wasn't stewing, but there I was awake until after one. *sigh* This means I don't have too much pep today, which is another reason why I didn't push myself to go longer without eating. I would really like to take off three pounds before mid-October, but not at any price.

                • Forgot to mention: I finally found a way to do pull-ups without a bar and in a way that my jelly arms can handle! I bought resistance bands recently, and I just looped them over the laundry hanger attachment I hook over my laundry room door (heh, furnace room with machines in it) and pulled down on the bands. Works the same muscles as a pull-up, without requiring as much strength. I pull down on them till I'm straining, then hold for a few counts. Not having the equipment to do pull-ups was a big obstacle for me in doing the primal strength training, especially because I would have to start with a bench or something because I am nowhere close to being able to pull up my body weight at all, so playgrounds and tree branches just wouldn't cut it. Not only that, but both the bands and the door hook would be easy to pack, so I could take them travelling too. I am so pleased. Although it does mean I am running out of excuses for not improving my fitness...

                  • Judg Fudge (Dashfire's name for it) is coconut oil mixed with cocoa powder and stevia. He adds nuts and coconut flakes and fruit to it, I stir in some almond butter. Depending on the temperature, the coconut oil might have to be melted or softened first, and if it's warm, then the mixture has to be chilled or else it's just chocolate sauce. Coconut oil and almonds in approximately equal proportions, stevia and cocoa to taste.

                    Siobhan got me started on it, but she used honey and no cocoa. I always tinker with things... LOL!

                    I haven't memorized your list, Pam, but it seems to me you could probably have this in one or another of its forms. Unless coconut oil is out, of course.

                    • Fiction. So far, Christian fantasy, which is an awfully niche market, unless you're C.S. Lewis. I have other ideas trotting around in my head too, for when I start again. They're trotting around more often nowadays, which is a good sign.

                          • That's fantastic. I'll love reading your books:-) C.S. Lewis has been done, so you can be you. I can't wait. It will happen. Ideas trotting sounds positive, and you'll be less tired than say 20 years ago as you have word processors. I remember typing and having to erase. I worked for a German firm, and everything had many copies and had to be perfect!!!

                            I forgot to tell you -- I love your new picture. I should probably update mine someday -- tee hee!

                                No, not yet. Very few publishers for that, and the whole publishing industry is in the middle of the digital shake-up, so it's hard to say what the new order is going to look like. I'll start trying to shop it around again one of these days, and if nobody wants it, I'll consider self-publishing an electronic version.

                                That would be a great idea. It looks like you took that one last winter! Ah, the Germans and their perfectionism! Although the worst perfectionist I ever had to deal with was Parisian. At least he was a congenial perfectionist.

                                The scales were encouraging this morning. I had hoped to equal my lowest weight, but instead I took it out by a full pound! 145.2. So that black pencil skirt finally came out of my reward drawer. It will have to wait until Sunday, because I really can't see hanging around the house in it...

                                I went for a long walk today. It's one of those glorious fall days, sunny and sweater weather. I was kind of hungry when I got back (about 1:30 and I hadn't eaten yet) so I made myself up some eggs. Oh, they were good! Sauteed a slice of onion (chopped) and a half a can of mushrooms with a little oregano in butter, then poured two eggs mixed with a little half-and-half and some grated cacciocavallo (an Italian cheese similar to provolone, home-made by a relative) and cooked it covered over gentle heat. Cut it in quarters, flipped the pieces, and gave it another couple of minutes. I just love stuff like that. I'm not overly fond of eggs all on their own, but add the right ingredients and they are sheer bliss. Easy, fast, and cheap too. I had to transfer some roasted pumpkin and some applesauce into smaller containers for the freezer, so I did a little snitching of those for my fruit and veggies.

                                On another note, can I heartily recommend Celestial Seasonings' Bengal Tea? It's a spiced herb tea, similar in taste to chai, but with no tannin or caffeine and lots and lots of cinnamon. Because of the cinnamon, it tastes sweet all on its own and the flavour is amazing.

                                I did a wee bit of strength training yesterday with the resistance bands (very gentle workout for decrepit me) and am feeling good with it today. I'm preparing to start Mark's Lift Heavy Things workout, now that I've figured out a substitute for the pull-ups. I'm curious to see if that will be much more demanding than my current workout. Probably. Mine is designed to be daily, and can be done easily in less than ten minutes.

                                And that about wraps up my Primal news for the day. I hope you guys are all doing well. I'm off to check your journals before I go back to doing something productive.
